geex, this universe has some weird technology. people will fight with swords and ride on giant tigers, but they also have lazers, giant mechanical animals, and flying car things
This could have been a great two parter but they cramped it all into one episode and left out what could have been some great parts. Like the Masters, the King, and his army vs. Serpos
One thing that always bugged me is: Why does He-Man need a secret identity as Prince Adam anyway? It's not like he's Superman and has to work as Clark Kent to get tips on current events as they happen. It just seems weird that he can't be He-Man all the time even if He-Man is maybe also heir to the throne as well. Prince He-Man makes at least as much sense as a duel identity. :)
Adam is the son of the king of an entire planet, for crying out loud. He can't exactly go missing and not be noticed, nor can he just announce his true identity without putting his immediate family in danger. Skeletor on several occasions was able to send minions right into the royal palace (or enter there himself) in disguise.
@logik316 Okay so if Skeletor can send minions in and enter himself then how does this whole secret identity thing help exactly? I mean the royal family due to their status will always be a prime target no matter what. I was just recalling the pre-cartoon comics where He-Man was just a wandering barbarian warrior just never took to the whole He-Man/Prince Adam thing it's just so Superman/Clark Kent. :)
I guess if Skeletor's in the palace and thinks that He-Man isn't around, that puts him at a disadvantage as Adam transforms nearby and shows up right behind him. And his prime target has always been Greyskull, not the royal palace. While the king/queen are always in some danger of getting abducted or harmed, they're just brownie points to Skeletor, but he would surely focus all his resources on them if he found out they were his worst enemy's parents.
Roger Sweet (the original creator of the He-Man figure) also hated the Adam/He-Man alter ego thing for the same reason. But I see only a superficial resemblance to Clark Kent/Superman. Clark Kent *is* and always was Superman, he merely throws a suit and glasses over his costume. But Prince Adam was born and lives most of his life as a weak and fallible mortal, and can only sometimes attain the power of He-Man. That makes him a more complex character.
@logik316 Well the resemblance is in that Clark/Adam are both characterized as nerdy and weak and having to flee from danger (to cover their actions as Superman/He-Man). As far as disguises go Adam/He-Man's is WAY more thin as they both have the same face, same hair and same build. the only difference is clothing and voice. :) Anyway, in world like Eterinia I'm not sure why anyone would need a secret identity in the first place. I guess I just like the old pre-cartoon version better. :)
Because Adam has something far better than a change of clothes - MAGIC ;-)
But really, it's only because the original MOTU relied too heavily on using cost-efficient shortcuts to manufacture action figures and would reuse the same factory dies, so many of the characters looked alike and this sometimes carried over to the cartoon. But at least in the 2002 version, they did make He-Man and Prince Adam look substantially different from each other.
@logik316 well that is something but I still don't see why he needs a secret identity in the first place. This is a sci-fi/fantasy setting not a super hero show. The other characters don't have secret identities. Not sure why He-Man couldn't just be the wandering barbarian hero he was meant to be and if they had to have a Prince he couldn't just be friends with He-Man or under his protection or something. :)
You're not alone, there are lots of fans who prefer the original Conan-esque mini-comics He-Man. But remember, even in the very beginning Roger Sweet marketed him as a toy to make young boys feel empowered. For the first time, you could control this articulated and highly pose-able figure of a huge muscled manly man (which every boy wished he could look like someday) who could beat up anybody.
The wimpy boyish Adam alter-ego and transformation sequence fed directly into this psychological process in a way that Superman never really did. Dr. Banner/Incredible Hulk is more similar in this respect, but his angstiness, lower intelligence and ugliness, in my opinion, limited his appeal. There were other muscled heroes that predated He-Man of course, such as Conan and Tarzan, but their backgrounds were too adult oriented to market easily to kids.
@logik316 Well, as I recall the whole thing was originally going to be a Conan toy line but they lost the licence and changed the names. :) Anyway, the whole reason the Pre-Crisis Clark was a bumbling, weakling was to appeal to young boys who felt the same. Still of all I would day the Billy Batson/Captain Marvel connection is the strongest because Billy ACTUALLY is a young boy and an bullied orphan at that. :)
Neither Sweet nor any other Mattel employee (for trademark infringement reasons) will *ever* admit to any connection between Conan and He-Man, but it's safe to say the former at least had some influence on the latter. I should read up on Captain Marvel, but perhaps if he would've had an affordable (only around $5 a piece) and pose-able action figure with a cool weapon and 27 inch biceps back in the 80's, he very well might've taken the show instead of He-Man ;-)
@logik316 I read that was the intent but they lost the license so they just changed some names and did some redesigns. Glad they did because my childhood wouldn't have been the same. :) Captain Marvel is a comic book hero. In his secret identity he is a orphan boy named Billy Batson who changes into the muscle bound adult hero Captain Marvel by saying the magic word SHAZAM! He had a Super Powers figure in the 80's along with Superman, Batman, etc...
I do remember Shazam from the 80's cartoon. But he didn't look "muscle-bound", nor did Superman, until comic book artists later on in the 90's put him on steroids. The classical renditions of those two heroes were certainly super-strong and looked relatively fit, but just looked like average mortal men. I think on a technical point, they could well be even stronger than He-Man, but it was the He-Man action figure that first made the bold visual impact with the huge muscles.
@logik316 Why do I flash on Stewie's little talk about muscular action figures when I read that? :) Actually, I think they went a bit overboard with the muscles on the He-Man figures and the less said about He-Man being half naked the better but I guess it caught on and I know I had nearly the whole set of figures and stuff back in the day. :) Honestly, comparing He-Man and their characters to super heroes might be a bit off (which is also why I hate the secret identity thing).
I ahve the whole series on dvd! I'm usually REALL skeptical about 80's cartoon revivals, (90's He-man anyone..YUCK, lol) But, I thoroughly enjoyed this 02-03 adaptation. I thought it was really good. A bit much emphasis on the snake men tho'! It's cool that Hordak was in some ways introduced in this series, it would've been GREAT if they could've somehow brought in He-man's/Prince Adam's tein sister SHE-RA/Princess Adora...THAT would've topped it off I think.
It sucks that this was the end of the series. Definitely wanted more. Also, I was really disappointed that they somehow didn't tie Skeletor into the end of this episode somehow. I mean he says "Whoever is responsible for this will perish a 1000 deaths!" and then we never see him again. Lame.
@logik he just got the He-man knocked out of him , he's lucky Zodak woke him up. Maybe He-man feels too sexy to be watched when he transforms lmao Can somebody tell me whey they are always waiting for evil to come for them, they never take the offensive.
I guess it's because Skeletor can usually simply teleport away whenever he gets cornered, and maybe the good guys are afraid of losing too many lives if Skeletor engages in a fighting retreat.

I have to admit, as much as I loved the old cartoon, looking at this show objectively, I have to say it was probably the better cartoon.
The characters seemed more realistic, the villains were genuine threats rasther than comic foils and the over-arcing stories were well-written.
I just wish they hadn't been cancelled after season two. It would have been great to see Hordak again.
