@kdwantsasnack they wouldnt listen buddy.. i gave up this fight long ago.. its futile..i tried..its like talking to an incredibly egocentric brick wall..
Every camera will have its cons and pros. The problem with DSLR for filmmaking is that it can only record for up to 10-12 minutes before it stops recording so it does not damage the sensor. They are popular for filmmaking though because of cost, interchangeable lens, and that you can get them into tight corners. You can make a movie with one you just need some patience. The Canon t2i and 5D works great for me in Final cut pro. I don't have gelling when I pan my dslrs
Cant you all just pre-order a Red Epic or Scarlet and stop wining? If aliasing is holding back your incredible moviemaking skills. Did your parents get killed by aliasing? It time to let it go.
How many times must it be said: It is NOT about the gear, it IS about content.
I've been using DSLRs as the main camera in a number of projects, and of course, they have their issues but that is nothing that cannot be worked around. And it works fine, I get great footage for a great price that clients are happy about...
@Kireiiii I just watched vimeo DOT com /13671577 and it is a good film but Canon and Nikon HDSLR I still do not like them. The only HDSLR that I like is the Panasonic GH-2 no aliasing or moire issues. I know the GH-2 is not a SLR has no mirror but I forgot what you call them.
The problem is that Canon needs to fix their shit if Panasonic software in the GH-2 can down scale 14meg image down to 1080p then Canon should also.
@ngvgnDOTcom thats your problem, Canon did not make the 5D for filmmaking. It is the users who have made it to a filmmaking device. One of the best films of 2010 Tiny Furniture is completely shot on 7D. And Tiny Furniture is not a expensive movie to make. So they did not use any expensive post on it to "fight" aliasing.
all cameras have weak points. The main thing is if the enables people to make good movies.
Cant you just pre-order a Red Epic and stop wining.
@ngvgnDOTcom the panny GH2 is NOT a DSLR.. its electronic, NO MORROR.. sort yourself out with some facts.. canon etc use a mirror.. and a huge sensor.. so.. terrible more and rolling shutter.. look.. at the end of the day, if you want excellent video, get the likes of the panny sd700 video camera, and if you wand shallow DOF get a good 35mm adapter for it.. like the SG Blade.. the results kick DSLR ass.. i have BOTH, i KNOW..
@Kireiiii talking pish.. nothing found on vimeo.. not that it matters, the utter torment and hassle you have to go to to get passable HD video from DSLR is just not worth it.. i have had manny manny conversations regarding this with many many people.. you are far from the first sonny boy..
@robblac yeah thats your opinion, I have also talk and researched the matter. Canon completely changed the game. So much that Red delayed the Scarlet until now. There no denying that people made fantastic things with them. Tiny Furniture for example is a full length feature that was shot on the 7D from beginning to end. And that was released in cinemas. Have you checked out "the great camera shootout" by Zacuto? Where they test all the major DSLRs against 35mm film? Content matters.
@Kireiiii lol, so gullable, well, considering Zacuto make DSLR cages, mounts, rails, viewfinders, etc, etc, OF COURSE they will favour a DSLR in a "shoot off" dont be so nieve..
@robblac they make rigs for all types camera including 35mm cameras and the F3. And the experts is among others that producer on Star Wars, and other reel hollywood professionals. And there conclusion is not that DSLRs perfect or better than film. Its that despite there shortcomings like workflow, codecs, aliasing, ergonomics, non professional connectors, rolling-shutter there are positive sides to the cameras that make them usable for creative and artistic reasons. check out (10570139 on vimeo)
@Kireiiii there is nothing you can tell me about rigs etc, i already know, .. you are tottaly wrong about george lucas.. it was blown WAAAAY out of proportion.. i have had this argumanet many many time.. im not interested..as i said, shouting about some video on vimeo..( that dosent exist) means nothing.. decent video CAN be got from DSLR, but it is sooo awkward to use, and sooo filled with problems.. there is no point.. DSLR revolution is just a catchphrase.. it means nothing..your boring me
@robblac Im talking about Star Wars producer Rick McCallum who is one of the many professional people who participate in "The Great Camera Shotout". Remember that Attack of the Clones is among the fist mainstream bigbudget films to be shot completely digital. So he has really nothing to gain from saying the that DSLRs are interresting, I think it´s revolutionary that you can shoot an awardwinning good looking film with a 1700 dollar camera. The trailer is here on youtube look for Tiny Furniture.
@Kireiiii as i said.. you are boring me.. you can throw whatever names around, the fact remains that DSLR is a terrible option for HD video.. period. as i said.. i am fed up arguing with egomaniacs like you , who think they are correct.. but are not.. if DSLR was a real option, i would have saved a fortune.. but no.. they are just a still camera with medeocre video..
@robblac DSLRs are an option, but as you rightly point out they are not better than a Red or any other cinema style device. Same as your HDC-SD700 with 35mm adaptor is not better.
Some of the defects your camera setup has is low video bitrate, you loose a lot of sensitivity with the adaptor. The small CMOS sensors produce much more noise in the picture than a large sensor. Artifacts from the light passing two lenses a.s.o. But if you use the strength of cameras you can make wonderful film.
@robblac but they make rigs for any camera including yours. And I probably think there more money from professionals. Byt the way how do you explain the deep focus looking good in this video (search after "Canon 7D och Glidetrack 50cm räls") here on youtube.
You are right, Canon has the described aliising problems Panasonic GH1/Gh13 (hackes version of the GH1) has by far not as much and the coming GH2 will even be better.
@JRTET21 Yes I do realize House has filmed with a Canon 5D. Keep in mind they have a team in place of people that can fix all these problems in editing.
You can fix aliasing frame by frame and use photoshop and other tricks. But most people do not have the time to do these things or have the money to fire someone really good to fix these problems if they show up.
The DSLRs are good despite there problems. But all cameras have there weak points. Aliasing and rollingshutter are problems, it is especially visble in 720p. Not as mutch in 1080p. Rollingshutter is a problem on all modern cameras including the Red. Yes, there are problems but they are not unmanageable. And your wrong about fixing aliasing in post. Best way is to manage it at the set.
@ngvgnDOTcom it's not Canon's job to tell you that. If you half ass your film, of course you will run into shitty problems like these, however if you properly light and design your shots, you won't encounter these problems.
You sound as if you are disappointed in these cameras. Remember, these are STILLS cameras with video OPTIONS. They work phenomenally for what they are!
If you don't like it then you can GET OUT! No0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0b
@sackocrack Then tell me why even Canon camcorders have shitty Aliasing problems? And why do Panasonic camcorders do not have aliasing problems like Canon Camcorders.
Its not just Canon HDSLR but also their camcorders.
@ngvgnDOTcom yes the GH1 has less aliasing, because it has better downscaling. But i also has a smaller sensor and lower bitrate. So more noise, not as shallow depth of field, smaller larger cropfactor.
By the way how do you explain the deep focus looking good in this video (search after "Canon 7D och Glidetrack 50cm räls") here on youtube.
I like the GH1 to by the way. Actually I like a cameras in general.
@ngvgnDOTcom I'll say it again. If you know what you are doing, you will design your shots (lighting, angles, lenses, location, set dress, art, wardrobe..) properly so you get what you want and avoid these nitty gritty problems you are crying about. Now, i am talking about filmmaking, as it says in your title. Run and gun type shoots like documentaries or new or whatever it is you are doing where you have no control over your shots and environment, then it is a different story.
@ngvgnDOTcom I have shot a 40 page script on the 7D and ended up with a total of 3 shots that had aliasing. It sounds as if you are blaming the camera for your lack of cinematography skills.
@sackocrack Even Canon shitty VIXIA camcorders have aliasing problems. The problem is in the software that has to down sample the image to 1080p. A lot of you fanboy are like its a camera not a camcorder. So why does Canon camcorders have aliasing? Because Canon as shitty software to down sample the image.
How come Panasonic can make the GH-2 with almost no aliasing problems and their camcorders? Because they have better software for down sampling.
Thanks for the links, I will check them out. I agree, with the film makers about buying a very good camera if you're going to make money with your videos.

I think your missing the point DSLR its because of
creative reasons people are using DSLR not economical.
House has the money to rent a RED if the want to, but they want
a camera thats small, light sensitive and has a sensor thats bigger
than 35mm film.
