I would like to dedicate this song to a certain someone who has ripped my heart out TWICE now. And you know who you are. There is no fool like an old fool. Signed, an old fool : )
No way could jennifer sing like aretha . can't come near her. and am not hateting on jennifer. she.s just ok to me . now fantasia she 's has the anoiting in her singing. . mabe some one never fealt the spirit of god. when some one is anointed you can't sit down you got to move and the hair stand up on your arms and chills run up and down your spine. she have it. also
Jennifer Hudson would be the best person to play Ms. Franklin hands down her voice like Aretha is so powerful. I saw Aretha Franklin perform in philly best day of my life so luv her.
This is from Aretha's Columbia period, before she became "Queen of Soul". Barbra Streisand was also on the label at this time, and the execs at Columbia didn't know what to do with Aretha. Remember, there was no such thing as soul music yet.
Its not a quetion of Halle Berry not being pretty enouf to play Aretha. The problem is she's not a singer. There's only one person who should play Aretha. Period. Her name is Fantasia
@TheQueenAretha....I think I will stand corrected here because while I am a big fan of Fantasia the singer I made two mistakes here..mistake number one was assuming Fantasia could act because she played Celie in the Broadway version of "Color Purple" which I never got to see...the second mistake was perhaps concluding a bit too hastily because the more I think of it I am sure Jennifer Hudson could not only do the job acting but also sing the heck out of the Aretha songs
someone here saysa they didn't even know Aretha did this song. In fact this was HER song. In fact for a short time it was best known and signature song. So much so that she referenced it in her two break-thru songs for Atlantic. "I Never Loved A Man..." and "Respect"
This is my absolute favorite Aretha song...takes me back to junior high!!! I usually don't like live performances (unless I am there in person)...but this one is an exception...although I like the recorded version better :0)
This is the 1st time I've heard this live and I love it. Based on the comments here I listened to Neko Case version. I will agree with other commenters that she has a great version of this song but her phrasing is just like Aretha's recorded version. While she does a few touches to make the song her own ultimately, she does Aretha.
@methtastesgood Can't say she does it better, she does it differently - that's for sure. Her version is AMAZING but they're working with two different sounds. Aretha's is a little more of a straightforward delivery of the lyrics and Neko's is a little more hurt, a little more angsty/emotional interpretation.
I well remember this record and how slim and pretty she was then. Musically, the best was ahead. Don't be surprised if she drops her weight and gets back to being slim again.
@luther2000 Oh I love Labelle's version. Truth be told, I was on here just now looking for their version and didn't even know Aretha ever did this song. Wow what a nice surprise!
I love so many of her Columbia recordings, and this one among them. I'm looking for it on YouTube with the back-up vocals, the Sweet Inspirations (probably at this time still aka The Drinkard Singers). The backups on songs, especially those with the Sweet Inspirations are what really complete (and sometimes even steal) the song. Oh, well... I'll keep browsing.
Wonderful! Gorgeous REAL jazzy music! Fabulous rendition!

She actually did not write the song Fred Ahlert did. It was written for her to sing.

sounds like she felt pressure to pretty it up for tv - this song is meant to be sung raw.
