@hotspurschool Probably as much as you know i.e., nothing. But I can use my common sense and...conjecture (?) that real fighting with sword and shield is going to be a lot...messier(?) than that.
For example, I can see many instances where it would be prudent to "run" your oppenent and "tie" him up. So in effect, it would turn into a grappling/stabbing match....not as pretty and stylized as your sparring.....
Don't get me wrong--I love what you guys are doing.
@hotspurschool I explained what I know (i.e., nothing) and I explained my reasoning. There is no insult. It was just my opinion--an observation. I'm with no group. No insult meant mate. Keep up the good work.
@bourquechris I don't doubt the authenticity of the techniques; my original comment only pointed out that "real" duelling would likely be a lot different. I liken it to what would happen if you took the gloves off two heavy weight boxers and had no rounds or rules....whole different game. Don't get me wrong, I think it's cool as hell, the sparring that they are doing....I'll bet it's very physically demanding and you can still take a good knock eh?
@bourquechris They study actual medieval manuals on how to fight, theyre western martial artists, it could turn into grappling but wouldnt that kind of destroy the museums floor?
don't forget this was a public demo at a place of learning called a Museum. The day consisted of the history of Judicial Duels. The type of sparring we do for such a demo is controlled free-play, Reason 1 - we did 4 demos of 3 different fights (see also the poleaxe free-play), you are no use if you suffer an injury Reason 2 - we want to show the public clear techiques being used and were taught in Europe. Reason 3 - we still have to entertain not scare them and act like brutes.
@jacobite80 Haha. Of course--they couldn't just go around stabbing and grappling oneanother could they? Brutes wresting around splashing blood in the hallowed halls of the museum, children needing therapy latter, etc....that wouldn't be entertaining at all....
What's a "Judicial Duel?" A legally sanctioned, recorded duel? That would've been interesting to see a YouTube video of that eh?
Thank you ever so much for uploading your videos, sir. I've never seen this form of dueling before, though, so I was a bit stoked to see it for the first time. :) Looks like a demanding form of swordplay indeed!
Truly inspiring, and that's what you look for in a video like this one. In my opinion, looking for ideas to improve your own technique in other styles than just your own is a good way to broaden your arsenal. Thank you again, kind sir, for posting your videos! Truly inspiring. :)
what is the history of these shield

@bourquechris Why insult us if you like what we're doing? Do you have any videos up of your own sessions? Are you with a group, such as AEMMA?

How much do those swords weigh?

Around 3 pounds, i guess. Actually it's a two-handed weapon by nature.

Precisely! Couldn't have said it better myself.

I of course, have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. That being said, those shields are very strange.
gregvs3 3 years ago
I agree, they are strange looking, and look like they're meant for dueling rather then... warring? Yeah... I'll stick with that. Awesome though.
000majorwinters000 2 years ago
very well done! I hope to make those type of dueling shields for my group someday. Very good demonstration.

Wallop! Never seen shields used in such a manner. I don't think I'd like to try it without a sturdy fencing mask!

Nice sword swap at 1:28. I cringed at the end of this. Are those spikes blunted!?!
Djemps 4 years ago
They are a wee bit spikey, but not enough to penetrate a fencing mask :) The do cause dents though!
At the end of the day, it's all about being in control of whatever weapon you're using.

now that's how you use a duelling shield
that was a great show we put on today Bob, how's the head from this fight?
jacobite80 4 years ago
It was a slammer of a shot, but Paul controlled it beautifully!
I'm still as handsome as ever!
