Bloke I knew purchase a Sydney ferry in the 90's. Was planning to convert it into a restaurant. Crazy bastard tried to sail it to Melbourne. It broke up and sank en route. All on board needed a helicopter out of there. There tough old boats but not that tough.
I have been on one of those horrible Manly Ferrys back in May 2006...scared the hell out of me.Normally they are ok but every now and then you get the big waves.
One of the scariest moments in my life occured on the Manly ferry when I was about 6 years old. Passing the heads, a huge swell hit us broadside, causing the boat to roll nearly 45 degrees. For a second I thought I was going to get thrown out of the upper deck - and I couldn't swim yet! When it came time to return to Sydney, I begged my folks not to get back on the ferry. We took the bus around instead.
This happened to my Nan and my aunt when they were going to manly from Circular Quay but the wave came in from the side and smashed them all they were soaked. :/
sweetx) I cant believe they went out in this weather but sure it looked all fine for the safety of the ship, but the comfort for the passengers..nah, not so good I would say.. really, even if the ship can take the weather wellenought without beeing endangered of sinking or any other unpleasent accidents, the passengers might not know that, they will just feel a hell of a bumpy ride and the waves shaking entire ship..that dont feel safe I know so .stupid they went in that weather, jsut scare ppl!
@BellBillie Even so, maybe someone filmed it in June and uploaded in July? I once uploaded a video from 2006 in 2009 on my old account, so you know -.-
Hilarious title on this clip. Is that the name of the ferry itself or just an adjective? I am also enjoying the homonym action of the word "ferry" in conjunction with "manly".
I love going on the Manly ferry in rough weather. The worst incident I remember was during a stormy afternoon a couple of years ago. The ferry was tilting with such force that from a side window, it felt like you would be able to reach out and touch the water. It was awesome/terrifying to see the ocean rushing towards you each time the ferry listed over on its side. Waves were splashing into the lower deck, people were puking everywhere, but the ferry is indestructible!
@Trex100 not exactly, it's inside sydney harbour. So it's not 'the ocean', but this video is shot near where the harbour opens out onto the ocean (a spot that is known for it's periodically rough weather).
@LOLDISNEYLAND the last couple of weeks have been ideal for catching it during rough weather. The swell was massive a few days ago. From the inside of one I saw another of the ferries rise so high on a wave that the bow (including that end's propeller) was completely out of the water. They were actually piloting them directly towards the ocean opening, then sharply turning away in order to minimise the amount of time spent lateral to the ocean waves. Evasive manoeuvres!
nothing harder than aussie grit, fuckin love 'em!!! sorry for the language. greetings from the uk. casey stoner for nxt yrs moto gp champ. go casey, top geezer.
These ferries (X4) were all designed to hit the swells head on and punch though them. There robust design is ideal for this , besides a few early computer hicups they have run non stop and only get stopped in fog or extremely dangerous storm condtions.
"Attention passengers, the snack bar is now open on the upper deck. We have a selection of refreshments including drinks pies sandwiches and sick bags. thank you."
what kind of random comment is that? you think just because estonia sank every ship in the world is particularly weak against taking waves head-on? estonia had flaws in her design + she had a bow visor design. besides, you really dont wanna take big waves any other way than head on... its all on google kid, maybe you should take a look :P
I've been across a few times when it's been really bad, but nothing like this! You try and act cool, but on every roll you tense up and the knuckles go extra white.
