  • If you're going to talk about Virtual Reality films, you should also know about "Brainstorm." Directed by Douglas Trumbull in 1883. "The 13th Floor" didn't show up until 1999. Both great films; both SERIOUSLY overlooked.

  • "he, what did you do to the universe"?

    "turned it off" :D:D

  • great movie!

  • It seems highly probable that we will have and be using a quantum computer that will be able to simulate consciousness with. It will evolve within the machine. All of this(the "objective" universe") evolved from a very large and yet infinitesimally small explosion 16 billion years ago. When we simulate it, it won't know we're here. Why is the speed of light a constant again?

  • @probablechoices So, if we develop a quantum computer with which we will be able to simulate consciousness (create a.i.). If we simulate the "big bang", the consciousness won`t know we`re here. Wait, what? If we can create a simulated consciousness, we surely don`t need to simulate the "big bang", we can just limit certain parts of the consciousness`s mind so that it won`t know it`s world is not real.

  • @KarlisKristaps

Ya sort of.. reality is subjective, so it's up to you just how it might happen.. but it can't be "created", it will evolve, like all of this did. Like we did. I meant that we can create a set of conditions within a device or whatever you'd like that will allow for consciousness to develop and evolve, but no no we can't create it. Check out tom campbell, he has a theory of everything that is highly interesting

  • I think I crapped my pants

  • Man this is like sims 30 for ps12

  • I think that trailer might have spoiled the movie...

  • We just broke speed of light Faster you go slower the time goes and at the speed of light, time stand stil for you.....if we would go faster then time we would actually move back to the past amazing Listen up asshole. Anything is possible, just because a couple smart fucks write a book doesn't mean everything they're saying is true. Anything can change as shown by this experiment, we don't understand the universe at all. You can take a fucking lap faggot.

  • because he is the last one of his family...

  • Why do I have the feeling this was completely overshadowed by The Matrix? I found out just now they both came out the same year, but the Matrix a month or two earlier.

  • This trailer does a bad job of selling a film that doesn't actually exist. It's like one of those funny "recut" trailers that change the genre of the film. Whoever made this trailer really tried to deep six the film.

  • nice movie, i dont think they should have put in the last 2 phrases though

  • HIM sing in this movie! Great song great band!

  • this is meant to the competition for the Matrix oh well we all no who won that game "the Matrix"

  • @Tonystarkes888 if you like that kind of film i reccomend Dark City it came out around same time as matrix and quite similar but quirky. Obv much less successful lol

  • @stefano118118 Dark City is a great movie, very underatted that one is in my top ten for best movies of all time.

  • Duke Nukem?

  • There's an old experimental band too...calling "13th floor elevator"(it's a slang code name for drug too if i'm not mistaken) Gavin Baddeley write about it in in book on goth culture. It's about alterate perception of life...seeking other point of view, believing that something else is possible and ultimately escape from reality (isn't what a movie is for after all ??) .

The point is : "what will be your reaction if you discover that nothing is real ? How much will shit your pants ???"

  • this new building in my city, they skipped the thirteenth floor because of how superstitious, so it goes 12, 14, 15

  • @gr8fread That's not the first time it happens, they do this kinda thing in some countries. I heard one day that they do that in Japan too. The 13th floor is a tabou, and in the movie it's a metaphor for a place where all things and truth we just don't want to deal with because it scares the poo out of us.

  • @MassacreAtTiffany also because of the mental disease know as Triscadecaphobia, the fear of the number thirteen

  • ha lol i remember this movie where i took my future wife to see this movie months before getting married.

  • The dreams of the dreamer only realize they are dreams when the dreamer dreams the to.

  • as much as you'd hate to realize it if you believe in an "all-knowing" higher power, ex. God. The universe is a simulation. if god knows everything and knows the future, your life is predetermined no matter how you look at it. god knows if you will think about your next "probable" move in life and what exactly you will do instead. Which leads to my theory that if he knows what everyone shall do then God doesn't care what we do. We were simply a toy if you will. entertainment

  • typical american crap

  • @lopezrodriquez Oh give it a rest. We don't care how 'richly cultured' you think you are, take it somewhere else.

  • Amazing premise, wonderful twists in the plot. A real winner.

  • i so want to watch this film!!! looks so interesting

  • Can you say TRON?

  • this was good, but i will say it moved too quickly before i really had time to engage with it. i felt there should be an hour's worth of cut scenes added to this movie. just not enough time before we are moved on to the next event- is this because its based on a bookperhaps? often a problem when books are long and squeezed down... but otherwise excellent film i like vincent donofrio.

  • reminds me of inception (2010)

  • this was such a great movie!! I found eXistenZ quite cheezy and disgusting. This in the other hand was awesome!!

  • eXistenZ, Martix, this. So everyone got bored of reality in the late 90s then?

  • I'm also really disappointed for seeing the trailer before the movie. I would have enjoyed it much more, like I did the matrix. First time I saw that movie I had all these questions b.c I had no clue what was going on.

  • Is it just me or are these ideas for technology movies ALOT better in the 90s.

  • This is one of my favorite movies, it deserves much more credit than it gets, well cast and extremely well written

  • we know your purpose mason 1:50

but i tell you : you know there is god (allah) and how matter you did to deceive us you will fail because we have faith but you give us nothing but lies

  • i loved this movie until the matrix came out...Then I shit my pants.

  • this film is amazing when you see it now and how much closer we are to that. just look how real virtual reality looks now. Similarities are crazy close.

How come that a computer can be connected to our brain ? ... BrainGate ...

You can only connect computer to another computer.

& only compatible software together,... if its not, it just won't work.

from how i can see it:

If we would not be in someway like hardware/software or just software, there would be no way that this could be possible.

  • @behumble4God in some way our brains are computers too (every braincell has the same functions as a processor). Connecting computer and brain is only matter of making software and hardware that is compatible with your brain (cause we can create computers and software the way we want it, but it's difficult to change the brains). It's only a matter of time before scientists will succeed in broadband brain computer connection. It already exist for small applications like for people with mutism

  • @banaaninjeoor broadband brain... would not surprise me =) when you think about how quickly we got from invention of digital machine, computer, to all that we have now & then what... "they":) already have, but its hidden from general public, ... mind blowing :D

  • @behumble4God Maybe you can make a movie script of that ;)

  • @banaaninjeoor :D Hey good idea

  • There's some philosophical theorem that goes something like "we have the following universe of possibilities:

1)Intelligent beings will never seek to make simulated universes

2)It is impossible to create simulated Universes

3)If both 1 & 2 fail to be true, we are almost certainly living in a simulated Universe

." (The idea being that simulated Universes will far out number the "actual" one).

  • @ShahidMiller

So according to your theory, we are unintelligent, able to create the impossible and are currently living in a simulated Universe. Do you suggest it is simulated in some kind of program? I agree with your principal theory by the way.

  • @ShahidMiller it cant be mpossible to create simulated Universes, because in our heads we have the idea so that means it is possible, "with an idea becomes possiblity" "Tonystarkes888"

  • @ShahidMiller if it was possible

  • @ShahidMiller I believe that concept has been put forward by VR theorist Nick Bostrom.

  • This film is based on the novel Simularon-3, which was written by Daniel F. Galouye and published in1964, nearly a decade before Bostrom was even born and four years prior to PKD's *Do Androids ...* It was first made into the tv film WORLD ON A WIRE by Fassbinder and released in 1973. Essentially, it is the first film about virtual reality, prefiguring TRON, Blade Runner, The Matrix, etc. Although the term "replicant" is not used, conceptually, the simulated figures in the film are just that.

  • @PathosDistanz Great info! I wasn't implying that Bostrom was first with the simulation idea, but to the specific enumerated speculations put forth above by ShahidMiller, who did not seem to know whose ideas they were.

Philip K. Dick's "Time Out of Joint" also portrayed a kind of VR, as did his "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch." Both of these would make excellent films.

  • @ShahidMiller Although I wouldn't agree with the statement. I had a similar thought about time travel which goes as follow: if time travel is possible, then it's already a reality.

  • @ShahidMiller the actual one is where your conciousness goes to after you die (a.k.a. leave the artificial body computer and mind) where love is the only reality.

  • @ShahidMiller So maybe simulated universes are the reason for multiverse?

  • @ShahidMiller Wrong, this would create a paradox.

If it's impossible to create simulated universes, then how would you live in a simulated universe if you CAN in fact make a simulated universe?

It would mean you're in a universe that got created by someone in an ''actual'' universe.

But as you've just said, creating them in an actual universe would be impossible.

  • The Sims 4 is this movie.

  • the trailer doesn't do the movie justice.

  • 11 who clicked "dislike" are just bots programmed to prevent us from discovering the truth

  • 11 who clicked dislike are just bots programmed to prevent us from discovering the truth

  • this movie is a boolshit -_-` !

  • @EipOon1 idiot

  • awesome

  • I'm glad I didn't see this trailer before watching the movie as it basically spoils the the surprise/twist at the end of the movie.

  • the movie was too short wen it ended i was like what! becuase it wasnt really a completed movie

  • The movie is about alot of other things aswell. had to watch it again. two thumbs up.

  • The Thirteenth floor is the edge of the world as you know it, can't go any further cause it could only go so far. kind of like the bounderies of a video game, you can only make so much content before you run out of space.

  • what's better this movie or donnie darko.

  • @BIGDADDYF50 donnie darko way way way better

  • @Carloswfi

agreed. Donnie Darko was a masterpiece

    would you agree ? :)

  • @BIGDADDYF50 donnie darko.

  • its fairly obvious our world is not real or at least every one else but me isnt every one behaves too similar like there only 1 or 2 basic behavior models everyone follows everyone is too predictable

  • @hod05 yes I agree, the more i study the mechanics of the quantum world, the more evidence I see we are living in a controlled reality, a built in program if you will, not to say this is 100 per cent true, it lends credence to the idea, so at least i applaud the effort of the film here.

  • Can anyone recommend any similar movies to thirteenth floor, the matrix, and dark city?

  • @DeViLiN888

Try Existenz, it is like the 13th floor, Matrix etc.

Try Cube, while different, it is also interesting movie

  • @CoolDojo9000 Thank you very much :)

  • @DeViLiN888

Your welcome. I forgot to mention another movie, which is Matrix like, Dark City, it is a very good.

  • @CoolDojo9000 Thank you. I will watch all of them! Do check out the new movie Inception on July 16th when it comes out. I think that this one will be amazing. It also deals with levels of reality, dreams and mind.

  • (!Might contain spoilers!)

This film totally blew my mind. The ending was very "american" but I didn't expect it, so that makes it sort of... different.

I like it how things got really complicated )although it took some time) and you really had to think hard sometimes.

The idea that lies behind this movie is far better than the one that lies behind the Matrix.

The Matrix might be rated "better" because of the special effects but still... I think this is better than the Matrix.

  • @euklid216 yes the idea behind the movie is fantastic, but the execution is horrible.

If you tell the story of the movie to a friend that has never seen it, it sounds like a masterpice, but when you actually see it, the movie is just mediocre.

there is a reason matrix has better rating (way better acting, better script, etc...).

  • Wait so WTF is the plot? They go through the portal so many times that they can't get back? Also from the title i would think this was a horror..

  • >overcomplicated

    lol

  • Yes, overcomplicated. As in: overt complexity that is not necessary to convey the ideas of the narrative.

I suppose you have something to say on the matter. The fact is that the only reason this movie has fanboys in because "it came first before the matrix." Well who cares; it stinks.

  • I didn't watch this movie. But is there such thing as a complicated movie? Or are the other movies just too simple?

    Hm..

  • If you're throwing plot twists and technobable on the screen just to look erudite. When a movie tries to say that it's too good for it's audience, the only ones who enjoy it are those dumb enough to believe the claim.

  • @paddymoep Yes, complicated movies from my point of view are called what Mamoru Oshii made. =)

  • Became before the Matrix? Both films were released in '99. Dark City on the other hand was released in '98, thus released before the Matrix.

Maybe you should follow your own advice, try reading, you might find small but important facts like release dates interesting.

  • Why the fuck said anything about dark city? Second, several of the comments did claim that this film came before the Matrix. Talk about taking your own advice, you don't even know the context of this discussion.

    Get the fuck outta here.

  • @featheon lol you dont understand the movie so it is shit?!

  • No, I elaborated on my reasoning below; quite rational. You should try reading.

  • Featheon, You are right, The 13th Floor does have some terrible dialogue. The movie premise and story is quite interesting though so saying it only appeals to base-level intellects is kind of unfair.

  • Overcomplicated?

How can something be overcomplicated AND only for base-level intellects at the same time?

  • Explained this in my comments, you imbecile.

  • @featheon im guessing u create scenes or ur an actor or do something similar around those lines? or u live with ur mom..?

  • You're right, one shouldn't critique art unless that person is part of a small elite group, right? How foolish of me to attempt criticism. Geez, some real base level intellects are all I've seen so far. Or you are all way better at interpreting this art than all those critics at rottentomatoes that gave it a combined 29%.

    What a pile.

  • @featheon You're a fucking idiot. The epitome of a "base level intellect". Actually no, more like a pseudo-intellectual.

  • @NoJamOnYourBread U MADD

  • If Matrix wouldn´t been released in 99 too this would´ve been a hit... This movie is even smarter and more elegantly made. But the audience voted for special effects... Matrix once blew me away, but this one, well, was insaley genius!!

  • @JDandDGvideos "Vivid bullshit". It's not a real movie. You're just incredibly stupid...

  • The Thirteenth Floor is the movie The Matrix wanted to be but couldn't quite get there. :-)

  • In 1999 nu has cap

  • I want my city drive inn rebuilt hooker yer fucking with the wrong forces

  • It's a interesting story. It's similar to matrix, being john malcovich and the truman show.

  • i think we might actually be in a simulation. seriously. i am super super into this stuff. if you know of any more movies like this please tell me.

  • dark city, the island, vanilla sky, aeon flux, ultra violet and of course the matrix....but there are other movies that have gnostic messages that deal with other stuff, movies like pleasantville, the fountain, the game, eXistenZ(and isten is a hungarian word for god) the truman show, twelve monkeys, and groundhog day

  • I love this film too:)))

  • I love this movie!!!

  • This is a great movie!!!

  • I saw this movie eight years ago. I loved the near end of this movie, when he drives to the end of this so called..........(not telling) It's creepy, blows your mind......could it be?!! Whoever came up with this movie had a great insight of the many who say this life is really but a dream or a hologram. Who really knows. You won't know until you die, and then it would be too late. The bottom line is create a life your happy with, enjoy it til the end.

  • For me it is better than The Matrix because it looks more realistic and more "believable". There is also another movie that is completely related to this one: eXistenZ.

  • I love this film, it is almost so good as Matrix, but doesn't have a expensive actor like Keannu Reeve.

  • An Awakening movie! 1 year before the Matrix.

If there is no Matrix... THIS IS the Matrix :)

  • Yeah, this one came earlier than the Matrix. Great movie. Shocking end!

  • Some of the worst acting I have ever seen. I had to switch this off after watching about 20 minutes of it.

  • agreed

  • That 'bad' acting is part of the movie, if you watch the rest of the movie you will understand why the acting is as such. You missed the whole point! Go back and watch the whole thing.

  • Where the Matrix, etc. wear thin fast, this flick gets better with each viewing, as the richness of the subtle backround detailing and wry set decorations complex parallel roles seep into the consciousness.

Bierko and Mol are a tantalizing duo, too.

  • great film

  • best mindfuck movie ever

  • Oh and thanks for trailer lolenywalker !

  • Comment removed

  • Did this come out before The Matrix?

  • It was around the same time I think mate, errrr.... I think they both got nominated for the same award, but Matrix got it.

  • Couple of months earlier I think. It's funny it just seemed that computer simulated existentialism just seemed to be all the rage then. The movie XistenZ was in production at the same time and came out a month after the Matrix. And Equilibrium. None of them were a rip off since they were all made at roughly the same time, it was just a weird coincedence. Of course the other movies all got crushed under the Matrix Juggernaut, but none of them are that bad.

  • @Beelzeboogie The plot of the movie Equilibrium has nothing to do with simulated reality!

But he first movie on this topic(simulted reality) was Welt am Draht (1973).

  • @Jozsef86330 Well with Equilibrium I was comparing it to the Matrix more for it's cinematography and gun-fu then it's plot, and the fact that it got lumped in with other movies such as The Thirteenth Floor and XistenZ as "Matrix rip-offs" which were released at around the same time. Dark City got lumped in with them too despite only vaguely resembling them.

  • @Beelzeboogie Matrix did rip-off movies also. As style it borrowed elements from Ghost in the shell and Akira etc. Maybe there are some similarities betwen Matrix gun fight and gun kata from equilibrium, but not enough to call it a rip-off , anyway those elements could have been elements Matrix borrowed from other movies, .. lol. Gun kata anyway was inveted for the movie equilibrium, and inspired from martial arts.

  • @Beelzeboogie And thirteen floor is not a rip-off after matrix it moslty a rip-off after Wolrds on wire from 1970, even matrix can be considered rip-off after that, becauze it has similar plot, and the esence is exaclty the same simulated reality.

  • @Beelzeboogie I saw this movie the other day the 1st time, damn this movie is pure masterpiece! Matrix got all the awards but it's shit compared to this... All the details and the story of this movie, pure win!

  • @Beelzeboogie actually "The Thirteenth floor" only has the story going for it, the acting and dialogue is horrible. and the movie is very predictable, does not even have good FX. The movie had potential for it being so GOOD, but it fails miserable because of bad direction, soap opera dialogue, and acting at the level of chris klein in the legend of chun-li. Now equilibrium is actually a great movie

  • @Beelzeboogie what is this "xistenz" movie you're talking about? Ive searched for it and cant find it. I would like to watch it :).. did u happen to spell it wrong?

  • @TaiLNeT Yeah I did. It's called eXistenZ, forgot the E. Stars Jude Law.

  • it came out at the same time, Equilibrium and Existenz as well.

Many movies of the same genre came out at 1999 just before the millennium. Just as there are many movies about the apocalypse before 2012.

  • let me correct you there, equilibrium came out in 2002, but still, an awesome movie.

  • you know who i wanna kill? how about we go kill milo sasha ray

  • has anyone ever played the game sim city 4000??

maybe were all like that game but someone created a very advenced version & if were all a simulation they did a damn good job on the texture maping lol

  • I saw a tv program about that, like one day there will be A.I. with so advanced programming that it wont even know its a program, it will think it is a real human being. So yeah, maybe we all are programs in a simulated game and just don't know it.

  • I don't tink my life is interesting enough to be a game.

  • we are. and its shockingly sad fucked up.confusing and every thing possible bad.

if u just only have knowledge that this reality we know is fake and dont have the rest,(the brighter side) then youll feel like that dude who read the letter and be angry. unfortunately i dont have the brighter side part yet,but david icke & many others seem to,& it must be some em good cuz they dont seem freaked out.

  • Is this even English what you're speaking?

  • @ksuedo wow thats scary

  • @ksuedo

so are you saying regular A.I. know that it is a program? isn't that more advanced than not knowing it's a program?

  • @vwazp

No not exactly. A basic computer program is not self conscious in the human condition. Current Artificial Intelligence programming mimics human emotions but is not at the stage where it believes itself to be human.

You could write a very basic command that identifies itself as "Human" easily, but that's vastly different to creating an A.I. that thinks it's human. The level of Advancement is not a factor.

Your computer can self diagnose, it is aware of itself therefore but it is not A.I.

  • Cudowny Film !!!!!!!!!! Miałam okazję oglądać go dwa razy i naprawdę zrobił na mnie niesamowite wrażenie !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Best movie ever! The only bad thing about it is actually its name. It shouldn't have been called The Thirteenth Floor. Besides that, this movie rocks. Great acting, good visuals and superb story. In one word, outstanding.

  • Love this movie....In my opinion far better then the Matrix even though done on the cheaper side!

  • Talk about the important things. Like how all of you are un-real -crafted for my benefit. eXistenZ, Dark City...Dr Jose Delgado, Paul Baird, Nick Bostrom, dreams (simulations-test-runs?)...

  • ya man. this is all a dream. your in a coma right now...and its your time to wake up...dont beleive me?..look behind you

  • one of my favourite sci-fi/thriller movies and an example of underestimated movie

  • im considering uploading this what do you folks think?

  • i have this on dvd, love this movie

but i don't like the matrix

this one has a different style especially when it comes to the camera work

  • yhea i like there fade from real to digital better than the matrix bianary style

  • The only good matrix was about the first half of the first one .. then it went wayyyyy toooo hollywood. A lot of "read between the lines" in that first part of the first matrix movie ... dunno if anyone else noticed

  • yhea hollywodd did seem to taint what it could have been, but just the same does it to most movies!

  • please do upload it man, its a great film.

  • actually it came out before the matrix, but may have been inspired by the books that inspired the matrix movie.. the title doesnt come to mind right now though

  • the name of the mistery, and powerfull book; wich inspired "the thirteen floor" and "the matrix", is..."the simulacrom"

  • Simulacron-3 by Daniel Galouye, not a bad book but drags on a bit.

  • I thought it was Jean Baudrillard's "Simulacra and Simulation".

  • Dude, this all happened WITHIN The Matrix. The real world was the world beyond the one they were already in. The one they're in is the Matrix. Kansas, dude. Kansas.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAH!

so in the year 3,000 well say the robots took over and used us as a power source and in the matrix we created a program that would make an alternate reality like in the 13th floor. and in that alternate reality they made one to!

    WHEN DOES THE NONSENSE END!

AND THE PEOPLE THAT MADE THE ROBOTS THAT TOOK OVER THE WORLD IS ACTUALLY ME! PROGRAMMING IT ALL!

  • Movie was amazing. way better idea than matrix. also recommend gamez i believe it's called.

  • This looks retarded and interesting at the same time...I actually want to see it.

  • What? Retarded? Mister it seems that you do not know what a good movie is. Believe me the movie is better than it looks like.

  • I am a MISS my dear and I didn't say it was retarded. It just looks retarded. I've seen great movies that looked horrible so I understand what you mean...

  • Great movie but it is very bad that it will only be remembered as ''that movie from join me.'' I hate when everyone always links this movie with that emo song.

  • this movie reminds me of the matrix i cant wait to see it

  • I haven't seen this movie in years, I was just thinking about it a few days ago, but couldn't remember the name. Can't wait to watch this again.

  • Thought this was a great film!!

  • This poor movie. The reason it was totally forgotten is because it came out in theatres right next to the MATRIX, and their concepts were so similar that the Matrix kinda won because it was so damn flashy. This is such a great movie, though.
