  • i know of a mall thats going to die, soon. The tri-county mall in cincinnati ohio. its losing business and each time i go there it seems creepier and creepier. very very eerie place. i cant imagine what a dead mall is like really even though i see it on video. sad to see these nice public facilities "die"

  • om dead riseing

  • the clover leaf mall in Virginia was like that for a LONG time, they just tore it down about a year ago :[ that used to be the "it" mall when my mom was in her teens :/

  • How come it's now dead?

  • It's just not that big. Sorry. If this were Denver or Dallas or Seattle it would look completely different already. I understand that's it's fun to find the odd corners of urban life, but this is just depressing. What's much cooler is the incredible deco structures in your downtown grid that nobody seems to care about, the ones falling into the ground. Sad.

  • i would have just went there with my friends and slept there and like live there. not like u pay bills or anything

  • u should have gone into macys and get some clothes lol :D

  • i woulda started stealling shit. nobody was there.

  • This looks almost exactly like the inside of Vallco Fashion Park (now called Vallco Shopping Mall) in Cupertino, CA.

  • they coud make dead rising movie in this one it resemble a lot like the one in the game

  • Funny how an abandoned mall still has pristine water fountains and working escalators

  • I'm guessing that there is still a caretaker, because the water in those fountains hasn't gone green.

  • i dont understand why you can just walk in this dead mall and the city pays for all it electricity to be on.

  • 0:48 oh lord get the guns its a walker

  • i wanna transform it into my own fantasy palace.

  • i bought a VCR back in '78 at that Macys. It cost $1000. Lol

  • It probably isn't locked up because it would just get broken in to.

  • Are there any plans for this place? It'd be such a waste to pull it down.

  • I don't why NOBODY steals anything I mean it's right in front of you for the taking

  • reminds me of the mall in the Buffy the vampire game.

  • What a shame such a lovely place left to rot.

  • I tell ya Frederick Towne Mall is dead beond dead,if you look up dead mall in a dictionary you'll see is picture.

  • Vicious Streak" by New world Order

  • was it shoplifted bare?

  • i bet its going to go under a renovation process. thats why its still standing

  • Have one in Crestwood, many of the old storefronts used for dance and art studios. But mall is rough and now that the last retail store Sears moved out, I heard the art shops will be moved out to knock it down. Convenient to take walks in the winter and hot summer. This mall is way bigger and it is creepy when most of the slots are empty, especially when you go back and another location is emptied out. Think of all the summer and part time jobs went through there. Fading in plain sight.

  • Nm* I realize now I was saying The Ideas do TOO*(period)my bad!

  • *the ideas of yesterday*,I meant-Man I really screwed that line up!*

  • theres a mall i Laurel Md. that has only like 3 or 4 stores still in operation and yet the mall isnt closed yet for some reason.Has been like that for a decade at least. It too onse had a montgomery Wards in it(Now Burlington Coat Factory)As times change the Ideas do to Yesterday(70s) was an opritune time for a mall.Today with so many more people on earth compared to than and an ever changing culture.malls arent the thing anymore and so new homes need to be built instead.

  • Why not sell it to Hollywood? Would create a lot of new jobs there and around it......

  • terrible music choice but interesting video.

  • This is what happens when greedy owners want too much to lease a space! I remember when this was a thriving and popular place to go! It started to decline about 15 years ago and never recovered. As you can tell from the vid, the place is huge! And the parking lot would hold thousands of cars. now, on an average day, you might have 40 cars total on the whole property! (most the cars prolly belong to employees) Its a shame. Its in a very populated area too! Same can be said for Metcalf South!

  • hei dude, it is good for zombie movies.

  • Two major reasons for the decline of these malls: 1) Internet shopping. It's cheaper to buy on line, and you can avoid paying sales tax. 2) Decline of the housewife. Women have now been fully integrated into the workforce and don't have the luxury of spending several hours shopping. Lifestyle Malls, which are cheaper to maintain and allow shoppers to drive right up to the stores and quickly pop in and out, have supplanted enclosed malls. They are more convenient for busy working women.

  • This mall could be made into its own metropolis...

  • looks like north korea

  • i knw macys was always an evil store smh -_-

  • where is this mall at I ust to live in Irvine ca

  • If I remember, I was there around 2005. It was my first of year high school and my mom didn't like my boyfriend so we go into a huge fight in front of the store at 4:33. Lulz, good times. My sister had her graduation at the pavilion thing(The ballon fountain as I always called it.) But I remember the place being packed, not that this mall was just a random decline. Hard to believe its dead, after spending so many summer days there as a kid :(

  • It would suck to work at that Lens Crafters!

  • What a shame. Nice-looking mall. We have 2 similar malls in our area that closed as a result of rampant crime and insufficient police protection.

  • I remember days back in the 80s when you couldn't find a place to park in that lot there were so many shoppers at that mall. Antioch was on the way out and getting quiet while Metro was adding stores left and right. Anyone remember the big balloons that went up & down in the main atrium?

  • Perfect metaphor for the dying consumer culture in the US. Temples to mass consumption that no one wants or can afford now, just like temples for gods the people don't believe in anymore. As an American, it really makes me wonder about our national character. In Europe, they have buildings that are 300 years old that are functional and beautifully keep. Here, we go through buildings as just another throwaway product. What a mentality...

  • @Moshpith Agreed.

  • @Moshpith Why you think the consumer culture is diyng? Is still what moves your economy, bad as it is and you better hope that`s enough, cause it`s all you`ve got.

  • @SuperKD1986 Perfect example of someone who can't understand the difference between hope and reality. I didn't say I hoped it would expire, I said it was expiring. The fact that you can't distinguish between those two positions is exactly why we have two teams of morons who take turns leading the country disguised as political parties. Americans seem to be unable to think clearly either. Welcome to the herd.

  • Instead of music... why not some narration? That'd make this video perfect.

  • when did it close

  • is this mall still standing.

  • @mulattoassassin it is.

  • @Archmetal06 it looks like it was a nice place.

  • Sad man. There's a mall in RI that just closed. They were only operating 4 stores in the past 5 years in a 2 level mall. Rhode Island Mall (1967-2010). Not sure when they're gonna demolish it. Only Sears and Kohl's are connected to it.

  • There was a rumor that this mall and Antioch were gonna be made kinda like zona rosa, and take the roofs off! I heard that about a year ago, but I don't know if that's true or not?

  • @DogGirlDee that would be ridiculous. it should just be torn down and be made a park ?

  • @Archmetal06 hobos would have superhome there!

  • How is it creepie?

  • you should have of taken that thing at 3:32

  • i remember going there all the time with my mom and looking around, my favorite place in there to go was spencers gifts 8-)

  • If the rejuvenation of a city's ailing central business district means sacrificing a regional shopping mall or three, then I'm all for it.

  • I wonder how much internet sales played in these business' going out of business

  • People need to understand that malls like this don't appeal to people like they did. It has nothing to do with the economy or people not having the money to shop. Go to Zona Rosa or the Legends on a weekend. You can't find a place to park. That type of shopping "experience" is what people prefer now days. I prefer old style malls, but they're like a cassette tape in a ipod world. Maybe twenty years from now, things will shift back to malls, and Zona Rosa will be dead.

  • You should have Looted the shit out of what was left. Well, what you wanted that was left.

  • the sharpstown mall in houston is REALLY creepy to walk around in. it closed about 4 years ago

  • metro makes it sound creepy

  • I don't understand something! You say the mall is abandoned, yet the escelator works, the lights are all on, and you can get inside! Is this place totally abandoned, or just 95% abandoned?

  • @emufandango It's not totally abandoned. It still has a few stores like Macy's and Lens Crafters inside. Just a hand full or businesses are left.

  • @emufandango sometimes when things get abandoned they keep lights on and don't turn off electricity.

  • This reminds me when one of my favorite malls started to go dead little by little. So sad...... I miss it.

  • according to Wikipedia this mall opened it's doors in 1976 and was anchored by 4 department stores and had 125 stores. The former Montgomery Ward store which closed in 2001, and its retail 'wing' are completely vacant, except for a Lenscrafters. JCPenney closed in mid-2008, in favor of opening two new stores. Dillard's converted to a clearance center in 2007, closing off the lower level of the store. Dillard's later left the mall in late 2008, in favor of a new location in nearby Zona Rosa.

  • turn it in to housing shops become homes ?

  • consumerism fail

  • Its so sad like our mall. Ive been here over 30 years in Helena MT. And the mall has been here longer. It used to be the place to hang out, and have a good meal, get the best clothing and loads of stuff. But now its like a ghost town and Im afraid going to go out of business. I think it is cause of box discount stores like Wal-mart, and the like that has killed the mall. Great video,

  • back when the twisters where tearning up down there, did tis place use as a shelter for dispalced familes?

  • it looks like the macys is open

  • Thanks for sharing, awesome sound track :)

  • Good place to have sex freely

  • Who doesn't love to visit abandoned malls and buildings?

  • this mall most likely will be torn down. it's over.

  • @Archmetal06 is macys the only shop open?

  • They should let homeless live here

  • Was this recently abandoned? It looks as if the entire mall's closed!

  • It shows what our country is turning into. Greedy banks, greedy insurance agencies, and greedy taxes is what doing this. Greed is gonna cause the end of the world, not no damn asteroid, earth quakes, or a mass flood.

  • Great 80s architecture forever frozen in time. This is why I love declining or dead malls that never remodeled. The worst thing a mall can do IMO is not take down the store signs, but that Montgomery Ward sign really takes me back.

  • Metro North is re-opening. It just closed because of Zona Rosa. The mayor is making some stores in Zona Rosa close down so they can go to Metro North.

  • @LoganBerry21310 that's good. it looks like a nice mall, so when i watched this for the first time, it was sad.

  • why is this mall even bothering with running water for the fountains??

  • If it's 'abandoned', how the fuck are all the lights and displays still on? Something isn't Kosher here, sorry...not buying it... :-/

  • @FlyersHockeyPride Yes it is abandoned , well not 100%. I liver here in KC and the Metro North mall used to be the #1 place when I was a kid. Nowadays it has only about a 40% occupancy and it's kind of depressing to see it dying.

  • This is a trend that is happening even in Australia, generally the owners of these malls want more and more money, resulting in the shops increasing prices, people wake up and stop buying at inflated prices.

The shops close up, with fewer and fewer shops customers go elsewhere to spend their money.

Eventually the whole place closes and the owners abandon the place, as they still have power bills etc to pay if they stay open.

  • Why are you not looting?

  • @chris4lyfe23 At the time of the filming at least, Metro North was still open. A depressing sight, but open nonetheless.

  • I say make it an airport. :)

  • Why are the doors unlocked? Why are the lights still on?

  • @hbkfan123123321321 and escalators and macys still appeared to be open and the fountains were still going and the wig shop was fully stocked still

  • @hbkfan123123321321 looooooooool the most stupid answer i read under this video

  • @hbkfan123123321321 because some stores are still in business there and trying to hang on, in

    case you didn't notice

  • @hbkfan123123321321 I think the mall itself is still open, it just only has like 4 stores.

  • @letslearnaboutwhales Sounds one of the malls here in Edmonton Alberta it has some stores open but others are all closed up even some fo the food court is still open.

  • @hbkfan123123321321 And the escalators still work too.

  • @hbkfan123123321321 Probably for the 2 people visiting Lens Crappers :P

  • @hbkfan123123321321 There are places still open, if you would watch before you comment.

  • @hbkfan123123321321 Theres still like 2 stores and one is lens crafters....... It's mostly used for a indoor running track by joggers

  • @hbkfan123123321321

Some stores are still open, but its fucking sad. Its fucking China's fault.

  • @doodedallover No, it isn't China's fault. It's because of modern economic thinking, government policies and corporate business practices. It is our companies that took the business and jobs to China and why would the Chinese say no to that?

  • i know what you mean my local town mall has like 2-1 store('s) and is just sad

  • OH TO LIVE IN A COUNTRY AS BIG AS THE U.S u are so lucky with all the space you have, and yet you are worried to go somewhere you dont know - thats terribly sad actually

  • actually, after many months of thinking about it (yes, i have been thinking about a youtube vid - shoot me) i think the fact that you dont visit a mall because it is the other side of a town than you, is THE PRECISE REASON WHY THEY ARE FAILING. if only you went furether than the end of your block/street/town you would see something different, and yes, the same high street shops in a different location, counts as different. i have been all over the UK, and only seen about 1% of it.

  • Wow...this is sad. I spent many hours at this place. It used to be the place to hang out for high school kids in the 70's and 80's

  • I wont say what city im in, but they have alot of homes that are empty or unfinnished and abandoned and the fools just keep building o_O iv never seen such insanity, you'd think the empty homes were just soda cans discarded and theres only one mall so they cant get rid of that, and yea theres a hell of alot of for lease signs everywere that wont go away plus empty lots.

  • Is it really this dead?? I used visit my dad in the summers from '85-'92 and it used to be so busy! I haven't been back since '99 and even then it wasn't too bad. How sad.

  • I remember going to that mall when I would visit my dad. It's a shame it's gone now.

  • How sad. I grew up in Gladstone & remember when Metro was built. I haven't been back for 15 years, but I always remember that mall being so alive & vibrant. It was also the weekend hot spot for us on the weekends back in 1980.

  • It is a shame a lot of malls are closing and being replaced by lifestyle centers and power centers. I don't like those places. I like going to the mall, which is a magical experience, like malls are supposed to be. I like going into a store, coming out, and being in a climate-controlled, enclosed structure. I don't like Walmart (haven't been in one since March, 2008 though I live around the corner from one), I like going to Sears and Penney's. Screw big box stores. They ruin America's history.

  • How in the world is The Wig Shoppe (4:41) still open? I remember that store there as a kid, back when this mall was a happenin' place - think early-mid 1980s. Sad to see Metro in this shape... Last time I was there, around Easter of 2011 (to get my son's pics taken with the Easter Bunny), it was still barren and eerily quiet. I dunno how they afford to stay open. Hope some sort of redevelopment happens. I loved going here when I was growing up.

  • @BriGuy1211 I did a report for my Professional Writing course on Metro North Mall and said as a kid me and my brothers always joked about how The Wig Shoppe could stay open, even in the mall's prime. We never ever saw anyone walk in there...while the places we hung out at...Gamestop, Fun Factory, Orange Julius, Spencers, etc are gone. I said that The Wig Shoppe still being open to this day was like the mall specifically laughing at me and everyone like me.

  • Zona Rosa killed it.

  • What was Norm's? I recently moved to Kansas City, and have done a lot of research on dead-mall's in this area, including Metro North, but haven't found anything on Norm's.

Since moving here, I've found interest in researching dead malls!

  • Sadly, this mall has died. It was once an awesome thriving mall! It is said to be partially torn down, remodeled and up and running by 2014. They should keep it the way it is, set it up like it was in the late 80's - early 90's and make a museum out of it! That'd be awesome!!

  • It is so saddening how many vids are on youtube about our malls closing! Everytime one closes, a part of our past, history, and culture dies along with it. It's like an erie bleak future movie, like Freejack. WTF is happening? So Sad :-(

  • @Yesterdays92 it is pretty sad.

  • @Archmetal06 LOL shouldn't you be saying that about houses instead?

Because it's kinda weird saying that about malls...

  • @Yesterdays92 Obama....

  • @WomackPhotoKCMO

This mall began it's decline before Obama was even in office, so I hope you aren't blaming it on him.

  • @Yesterdays92 In this case they built a huge modern open air mall (Zona Rosa) about two miles away. this one was doomed. I loved watching those balloons when I was a kid

  • @Yesterdays92 there are plenty of thriving malls in KC and around the country. the ones that die do so because the neighborhoods around them deteriorate when certain "cultures" move in. formerly nice malls turn into preying grounds for criminals. who wants to go there to get robbed, raped and murdered? Metro North is one exception. It died because they built a huge new outdoor mall a couple of miles away- Zona Rosa

  • @Yesterdays92 right. 'cause these places peddle unique and precious goods, not mass produced junk from china. so tragic.

  • @Yesterdays92 hahaha americans don't even have a real history. sorry dude but thats the truth

  • @DasKloputzer sory you dont have history

  • @ironoutlaw777 and americans always lie. they suck

  • @DasKloputzer sorry i ment

  • @Yesterdays92 We overbuilt during good times and now, during the worst of times, the ones that can't compete close. Of course exporting millions and millions of jobs is the root cause of it. These stores used to sell "Made In USA" and that's what made them work.

  • @Yesterdays92 SO FUCKING STUPID XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • @Yesterdays92 everyone does online shoppiing. no one even reads books anymore they use that kindle thing its reall sad

  • @mrplatinum919 It's sad to a degree, but I'm glad the digitization of media has allowed for more convenient consumption. I'm glad to have access to numerous texts and video in one device instead of having a bag load of DVDs, cassettes and hardcover books.

  • >A girl being pushed too her death "Right -there for instance at. 2:57 *

What a unique horror story righttz humans?* Lol..

  • >I just came back to see this great & Eerie vid;

It give chills how silent everything is down your spine Like something will pop out & Get get you like a monster of some kind.

*& kill you & that imagine inside & outside of that mall will be what you see after death eternally; what a nightmare... * but it's fun to look at these things & think about scary early 80's twilight zone ideas like that.

  • Not lying, this video actually inspired me to write a paper for my professional writing class at Park University about Metro North Mall (and has now become about the downfall of mall culture in general). It holds alot of memories, being one of the mallrats that was dropped off to hang out there and whatnot. I even visited the mall to close the project out after I hadn't been in three years. Some of the places still open in this vid are gone now too.

  • Poor Metro North...It was booming when I was younger...Mr.Bulkys, Spencers, Gadzooks...the balloons

  • i just got done looking at videos of West Edmonton Mall, which is the largest mall in North America. INSANELY HUGE !

  • because crime is less prevelant, as the police/community are there constantly to smack down the criminals. please dont take this as a diss of usa. i love u guys. but town planning shud take a bigger role sometimes, like i said .. only a thort. peace!

  • hello again, just a little thort :). i think sometimes the problem with american (usa) malls, is that they are built outside of towns. so first of all they kill off the high streets in said towns, then, because of location, crime/depravation happens more easily. in my home town of redditch england, the shopping centre is smack bang in the town centre, so the shoppers of the "mall" spill out onto the high street, keeping both alive

  • @REDDITCHROCKS We have a similar situation here in Miami, FLA, US. At least here on West Flagler. The two big malls are right by the airport (Dolphin Mall and Miami International Mall), so in addition to bringing in tourists, the locals get to keep their businesses going because the mall is more a complement than a cancer.

  • gahh...this is driving me insane now. cause there's also a reaaallly creepy one in KC, K. it's sort of like this one...and hardly anyone's ever in it. I wonder if it's even there anymore. If anyone knows...could you tell me the name please?

  • @Ambzelia89 i believe you're thinking of Indian Springs Mall located off 635 in KCK. Yeah, that one is creepy , smaller than Metro North, it also houses a police center from what i hear.

  • @Archmetal06

Aah, thank you very much. You're probably right. I believe it only has...1, MAYBE 2 floors. But thank you again, much appreciated. I will sub you, I just keep forgetting. But you have a lot of interesting stuff. Keep up the good work.

  • @Ambzelia89 antioch cener

  • what is the reasoning for this to still be "open"? i mean somebody is still paying the electric bill, paying for landscapers for those trees outside, paying for janitors for the inside, etc. what's the point? and who the hell is paying for it?

  • S**T!!!!! I remember this mall. I live in KC is it torn down yet. I remember seeing a rat run across the mall sience its abondoned then my dad left.

  • @timetraveler1897 i think it's still there, just still a "dead" mall. i never did shop there. i live on the south side of kc, leawood area.

  • @Archmetal06 Yeah. Oddly enough, some people still go to the Macy's over there, at least if a news report I saw on YouTube is to be believed. According to the mall's site, there are 15 shops (four outside the main mall). Redevelopment seems to be stalled, with the owner of the former Dillard's location cockblocking any attempt, presumably in order to prop up the Dillards at Zona Rosa.

  • @Archmetal06 u didnt go to a mall because it was the other side of a town than you? weeiird :)

  • love the primary colored tiles @ 4:30. you just don't see cheese like that anymore. :(

  • Due to 9/11, no one can take videos or photos of buildings and malls. So sad, as once the wonderful architecture is torn down, there are no historical photos to appreciate the artistic beauty of the modern designs of the past. You were lucky that you were not arrested as it now a federal law against such videos and photos. I had no idea about this law until a year ago while taking photos of a mall in Houston.

  • @ there is no law regarding taking photos/film of public places. it is done all the time. the only restricion is if it is private property and the person is warranted to leave, if they don't comply then it would violate tresspassing.

  • @patsaxon wooooow seriously? gee i didn't know that. :(

  • Ive been here countless times not once i have ever saw security

  • How did you aviod the security telling you not film? I was only there maybe 15 minutes and they told me I could not film. How were you able to go that far into the mall without some security guy stopping you?

  • @InspiredMuse74 There was barely anyone in the mall when i was there. I did not see security at all.

  • @InspiredMuse74 God that sounds like the worst job ever... Mall cop in a dead mall.

  • It is illegal to film inside a mall. I tried to film to show people how this mall was doing. I have some poor footage but you can check out my channel.

  • Any idea if the balloons still work? I remember watching those go up and down while mom shopped for whatever it was we were there for. XD

  • @mrericashley726 yes 20 stores 1 just shut down a week ago

  • Respond to this video... IN THE DILLLARDS PART

  • @SkinsDegrassiGleek I THINK SO

  • I havent been to this mall in 11 years.

  • @SkinsDegrassiGleek i have no idea. I did not go to this mall as much.

  • Wooo!! this mall looks happening. I'm there!!

  • @SkinsDegrassiGleek there is its long gone though
