@andycolekwanlee This may be the case with pop music, but music as whole is always evolving. Even these cello suites were evolutionary leaps at their time and again when they were discovered 150 years later.
When music stops and brain takes over heart again, it can't stop trying to understand how a man, not a god, not nature, could create such beauty all by himself. And what is its secret, to make it last centuries? This is for my mind a source of deep thinking, and of inspiration to emulate. But after all that doesnt matter, for to my heart this is pure glee.
I think the greatest thing about classical music is the fact that it is so easy to feel the emotion portrayed by a skilled artist such as Mischa Maisky, regardless of ones ethnic background or musical preference, we can all agree on the raw emotional influence of Bach's six suites for unaccompanied cello.
most of these were used as prctice pieces for many years its wasnt until later that people understood them for what they were maily organ music ported to the cello and a darn fine job hed did of it too, that Joe Bachh!
@comptonsmarkets It's Latvian... Former URSS republic. Why you think is mexican or Italian? His name is not latin rooted. (I'd be glad if he was mexican tough)
Most classical music performers learn their parts by heart...
Like yesterday, I went to see a concert by a pianist (he was playing chopin, schubert and debussy), he played without sheet music, for 2 hours and a half.
This was written at such an early time in the history of the modern Cello (and Bach's Baroque Era is the very beginning of post-Renaissance Western Classical) that although the 1st 4 Suites are written for a normally stringed and tuned 4-String Violoncello, the Fifth (5th) Suite is tuned for a smaller range, also the 6th 1 is controversial b/c of at least one other "-cello" instrument then, AND IT'S WRITTEN FOR 5-STRINGS.

hey, slow down there =) You got me wrong in more ways than I thought were possible in such a short message. I wrote you use the bow apart from playing p i z z i c a t o (what I was think the "plucking" on cello is called). I don't consider the guitar superior to the cello, I simply wanted to make a point about "pussying out" when it comes to right hand stuff (you started that), not to be taken serious (see the ;P) and I surely didn't want to start a discussion which instrument is "better" oO
see now, that's the childsh competition stuff nobody needs. Each instruments has it's own advantages and disadvantages - and now stop argueing and enjoy the music
man ... don't argue for stuff like that. guitars and cellos are completely different instruments... both beautiful in their own way i don't think music is about what someone can or cannot do with a piece of wood in their hands its about what you do with your soul.... i do agree that this are two completely different sounds, and that is people like that guy that spread mass ignorance haha
Guitarists don't use their fingers, they use picks. Which is an equal version of the bow.
Now both instruments have their respective sounds and neither is better than the other but in terms of learning and playing, cello requires a lot more precision and talent than a guitar. I know this because I've learned how to play both so please don't try to argue this point with me. You can try but I doubt you'll get anywhere.
Well respect to you for learning both instruments - but:
1. Claiming that guitarists use picks, you can't really have learnt classical guitar or even put a major interest in listening to it. Because when playing classical, you absolutely NEVER use picks.
2. Seeing that you don't talk about classical guitar (both instrument and style) here, you can't really judge whether it's easier to learn. It may be, but neither you nor me can tell by experience.
Electric, really is easier, but you can't really compare it to classical (I suspect, apocalyptica is easier then bach too).Search for julian bream, john williams, or any other classical guitarist on youtube and you will see, no picks at all, and after having seen some of the videos, you may agree that it's quite insulting to say that their instrument and style doesn't require as much effort or talent (!) as the cello, espacially without having mastered both instruments, what you clearly haven't.
But yes, I have to agree. I have become (not to brag) a pretty good guitarist in four years, and learned standard picking, some finger picking, and a lot of double tapping techniques. And still, the cello has taken me ten years and I'm still not as good as it. It's much more demanding.
A pick is hardly equal to a bow. Pick technique, at its most complex, is nowhere near as difficult as bowing, and I say this as a guitarist that tried (and failed) to learn cello and violin.
Then we should let someone who has mastered both instruments to tell us what is truly the hardest. Just because you can't do it, doesn't mean another guitarist couldn't.
I don't have to be a master surgeon and a master chef to know that surgery is more difficult than cooking. Bowing is more difficult than picking, and playing with good intonation is more difficult without frets than with.
Surgery:Cooking::Cello:Guitar. Cello is flat out more difficult than guitar. There's really not much more to be said about that. Do you really disagree or are you just being contrary for the sake of it?
at least cello and guitar are two musical instruments and yes, at this point i'm just being difficult haha. But yes Cello is a really hard instrument to learn to play..
An instrument cant be "more difficult" then another, because everything that makes some things easier (like picking) allows you to take it on another level.
So there are obviously things you cant do on a cello because it's physically not possible to bow as fast as you can pick.
so i think you can pick faster but it's still as difficult as bowing slower on the cello.
@parsonsmatt: i really disagree. i've played both. i will give you that it's harder to get good intonation without frets, but thats about it. bowing is easier than picking, because you never deal with hammer-ons and pull offs. plus, guitar has 2 more strings. and on cello you never deal with more than 2 strings at a time.
beg to differ... in this piece even there are triple stops, a lot of pieces have quadruple stops (4 string chords).. playing guitar and violin/viola/cello... guitar is easier because of the frets and the bowed instruments my not have to hammer on or pull off, but they have trills and tremolos to make up for it. Doesn't matter though, all cam make fantastic music and all are difficult to truly master
That's a poor analogy. This guy is a fantastic 'cellist, possibly the best performer of this piece ever. Whereas Pele is not the best football player ever. Since him there have been at least a hundred of better players. For example right now Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso , Kaká and Patrick Vieira are all better than him. And that list is not exhaustive. God, even Wayne Rooney and David Beckham are better players than he was. He was good, but by no means the best.
I didn't make an analogy. I made a statement. I was agreeing with you actually. I think this guy is a fantastic 'cellist. As I said, the best performance of this piece I've heard.
I merely suggested that your analogy to Pelé was ridiculous because Pelé was nowhere near as good a football as Mischa Maisky is at 'cello.
Yes, football people again. I think that label would cover more than half of the worlds population. It is possible to like both you know.
However as you can see, all I was doing was suggesting that I thought the analogy used didn't fit. You are clearly a narrow-minded fool with nothing better to do than ridicule other people's choice in entertainment. I pity you.
god....bless....you....too good...LOL XD

see now, that's the childsh competition stuff nobody needs. Each instruments has it's own advantages and disadvantages - and now stop argueing and enjoy the music
ArcticGuardiaN 2 years ago
man ... don't argue for stuff like that. guitars and cellos are completely different instruments... both beautiful in their own way i don't think music is about what someone can or cannot do with a piece of wood in their hands its about what you do with your soul.... i do agree that this are two completely different sounds, and that is people like that guy that spread mass ignorance haha

sorry, were you talking to me?

Guitarists don't use their fingers, they use picks. Which is an equal version of the bow.
Now both instruments have their respective sounds and neither is better than the other but in terms of learning and playing, cello requires a lot more precision and talent than a guitar. I know this because I've learned how to play both so please don't try to argue this point with me. You can try but I doubt you'll get anywhere.
ILuffleChibis 2 years ago
Well respect to you for learning both instruments - but:
1. Claiming that guitarists use picks, you can't really have learnt classical guitar or even put a major interest in listening to it. Because when playing classical, you absolutely NEVER use picks.
2. Seeing that you don't talk about classical guitar (both instrument and style) here, you can't really judge whether it's easier to learn. It may be, but neither you nor me can tell by experience.
ArcticGuardiaN 2 years ago
Electric, really is easier, but you can't really compare it to classical (I suspect, apocalyptica is easier then bach too).Search for julian bream, john williams, or any other classical guitarist on youtube and you will see, no picks at all, and after having seen some of the videos, you may agree that it's quite insulting to say that their instrument and style doesn't require as much effort or talent (!) as the cello, espacially without having mastered both instruments, what you clearly haven't.
ArcticGuardiaN 2 years ago
Guitarist use both picks AND FINGERS.
But yes, I have to agree. I have become (not to brag) a pretty good guitarist in four years, and learned standard picking, some finger picking, and a lot of double tapping techniques. And still, the cello has taken me ten years and I'm still not as good as it. It's much more demanding.
AEFic 2 years ago
A pick is hardly equal to a bow. Pick technique, at its most complex, is nowhere near as difficult as bowing, and I say this as a guitarist that tried (and failed) to learn cello and violin.
parsonsmatt 2 years ago
Then we should let someone who has mastered both instruments to tell us what is truly the hardest. Just because you can't do it, doesn't mean another guitarist couldn't.
RibBlake 2 years ago
I don't have to be a master surgeon and a master chef to know that surgery is more difficult than cooking. Bowing is more difficult than picking, and playing with good intonation is more difficult without frets than with.
parsonsmatt 2 years ago
I think being a surgeon and master chef is a bit different from picking a guitar and then using a bow for a cello
RibBlake 2 years ago
Oh absolutely, but I'm sure you understand what an analogy is...
parsonsmatt 2 years ago
i would hope you would understand what a logical analogy that actually suits the given topic.
RibBlake 2 years ago
Surgery:Cooking::Cello:Guitar. Cello is flat out more difficult than guitar. There's really not much more to be said about that. Do you really disagree or are you just being contrary for the sake of it?
parsonsmatt 2 years ago
at least cello and guitar are two musical instruments and yes, at this point i'm just being difficult haha. But yes Cello is a really hard instrument to learn to play..
RibBlake 2 years ago 2
An instrument cant be "more difficult" then another, because everything that makes some things easier (like picking) allows you to take it on another level.
So there are obviously things you cant do on a cello because it's physically not possible to bow as fast as you can pick.
so i think you can pick faster but it's still as difficult as bowing slower on the cello.

Tremolo.
Hunksha 2 years ago
@parsonsmatt: i really disagree. i've played both. i will give you that it's harder to get good intonation without frets, but thats about it. bowing is easier than picking, because you never deal with hammer-ons and pull offs. plus, guitar has 2 more strings. and on cello you never deal with more than 2 strings at a time.

'cept that they have 8str guitars now ;P
mattz1010 2 years ago
12 as well
zizn8r 2 years ago
yeah but...the 12 doesn't have as varied as a range as an 8...
mattz1010 2 years ago
beg to differ... in this piece even there are triple stops, a lot of pieces have quadruple stops (4 string chords).. playing guitar and violin/viola/cello... guitar is easier because of the frets and the bowed instruments my not have to hammer on or pull off, but they have trills and tremolos to make up for it. Doesn't matter though, all cam make fantastic music and all are difficult to truly master

this guy is like "pele" in soccer hehe simply the best ever.
Iampenetrator 2 years ago
That's a poor analogy. This guy is a fantastic 'cellist, possibly the best performer of this piece ever. Whereas Pele is not the best football player ever. Since him there have been at least a hundred of better players. For example right now Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso , Kaká and Patrick Vieira are all better than him. And that list is not exhaustive. God, even Wayne Rooney and David Beckham are better players than he was. He was good, but by no means the best.
iMarc89 2 years ago
i think your analogy is even more poor than mine just because you are makin this about soccer when its about cello!!
my coment was just a way of sayin he is the best,it wasnt to compare any players.
Iampenetrator 2 years ago 2
I didn't make an analogy. I made a statement. I was agreeing with you actually. I think this guy is a fantastic 'cellist. As I said, the best performance of this piece I've heard.
I merely suggested that your analogy to Pelé was ridiculous because Pelé was nowhere near as good a football as Mischa Maisky is at 'cello.
iMarc89 2 years ago
hahaha OK! viva EL CELLO y la VIDA = ).
Iampenetrator 2 years ago
Why, in heaven's name, would anyone compare football with classical music, particularly cello music...
ephingsto 2 years ago 7
For the long play...Of course !
docteurneo 2 years ago
uh football ppl again?
okbuthow 2 years ago
Yes, football people again. I think that label would cover more than half of the worlds population. It is possible to like both you know.
However as you can see, all I was doing was suggesting that I thought the analogy used didn't fit. You are clearly a narrow-minded fool with nothing better to do than ridicule other people's choice in entertainment. I pity you.

This is more than enough to make me fall in love with the art cello playing!
