This is a tradition that comes from the pantomimes where the female roles are played by men. Typically this gender reversal is made obvious as a running gag. Also the lead boy is played by a young woman. Usually in a costume that emphasises this.

They are out there. Especially in the UK the best opportunity to see a show is at the May Fayre in Covent Garden on the second Sunday in May.

One of the greatest things ever created and still going after 347 years now!!!!
Always loved the crocodile in the shows as well as mr punch and the ghost. Will try get the Otley Carnival version on here at some point
