I don't think it's against the rules. I've heard of guys scoring a bucket and sitting on the bench only to steal it back when the other team was bringing it up court. out of bounds is still part of the game.

people are idiots for thinking that this was an illegal play: JJ Redick was supposed to come in, but he was sent back to the bench because he didnt alert the scorer's table. Richardson was never actually out of the game, so that was perfectly legal
