the problems with steam are its slightly more complex, designing burners, boilers, valve trains...
but look how sophisticated the otto cycle has become in todays car engine.
advances in machining capabilities, materials.... if we had invested as much effort in developing external combustion as we have with internal combustion, the comparisons would possibly be negligible.
steam was just left behind as petrol was easier...like the electrics...
You can show a clip of a car failing horrifically to a person who has never seen automobiles and say the same thing... but both these things DO work. One instance of failure doesn't mean the entire concept is crap.... efficiency... though, is different issue
A lot of steam bikes work very well, and some will go faster than you'd ever dare to go on a bicycle (one went about 70 in the 1800s and the guy had a heart attack. 70 is like 300 now).
