The best part of the original version of this song was the incredible drumming by Keith Moon. The straight forward drumming here makes it kind of a boring song.

I agree, but still think Bono should have learned the words and maybe they should have included the bridge... (which would have come in after the guitar solo) "I move myself and my family aside, if we happen to be left half alive" - as a piece of writing, it breathes a new life into the song and lyrically takes another angle on what the song is about. But U2 has always been a bit lazy about the exactitude of their covers.

Okay everyone, concerning the "butchered" lyrics of the song, it was probably to avoid copyright infringement, it's most likely that U2 doesn't have the rights to play "Won't Get Fooled Again" and so they don't get sued they changed the words. Regarding the lack of scream, Bono isn't a screamer. I don't think that in any of his songs that I've heard he ever screams, he just sustains notes; so in this case I'm glad he didn't do the scream, because frankly no one can compare to Roger on it.

I feel like the luckyest guitar fan alive I get to watch people like the Edge all the time on you tube thanks alot ! you tube! You're great! I ve been buying all kinds of DVD's for years, but now I can watch clips here and there and know that it's worth it before I buy them. Rock on U2 you are awesome!

I think that the weak vocals here lack the power needed to do this cover justice. The Van Halen version has the power in the vocals with Sammy Hager, and I'm no Hager fan.

I agree, but still think Bono should have learned the words and maybe they should have included the bridge... (which would have come in after the guitar solo) "I move myself and my family aside, if we happen to be left half alive" - as a piece of writing, it breathes a new life into the song and lyrically takes another angle on what the song is about. But U2 has always been a bit lazy about the exactitude of their covers.

@camcoop25 fair enough and to be honest maybe they just do simple versions because there is no point in trying to do them exactly the same way. 99/100 a cover song won't be as good as the originla so why not just make it a simple tribute. I don't know. I just laugh at all the people who have thier days ruined by a band doing a cover song especially if the band doing it is one they don't like yet still took the time to watch the video anyways haha.

OK, so we are all pricks bitching - even if we admit U2 is a good band. The point is if you are covering a band that is BETTER, you don't fuck it up by changing the lyrics. U2 did the Rolling Stones justice on "Gimme Shelter" at the R&R
Hall of Fame concert by sticking to the script, and the Stones are easy to cover. U2 love and owe a lot to The Who - this is not their best effort I am sure. There is a reason The Who do not cover U2 - they do occasionally cover The Stones.

Okay everyone, concerning the "butchered" lyrics of the song, it was probably to avoid copyright infringement, it's most likely that U2 doesn't have the rights to play "Won't Get Fooled Again" and so they don't get sued they changed the words. Regarding the lack of scream, Bono isn't a screamer. I don't think that in any of his songs that I've heard he ever screams, he just sustains notes; so in this case I'm glad he didn't do the scream, because frankly no one can compare to Roger on it.

Bono and Adam Clayton are the one's who screw this up. I love U2 as long as they don't try cover songs by better bands - WTF is Bono doing even trying to ad lib lines and change the lyrics of such a masterpiece? And you can't even hear Clayton's bass. Mullen and The Edge are holding their own though.

If you seriously came here to find something better than the original then you came to the wrong place. Like every band on earth, The Who made songs that fit The Who best, U2 makes songs that fit U2 best. If The Who would try doing a U2 cover, the results would be just as "terrible".
Both bands are excellent at their own music, usually not very good at other's music.

@jennincl Good covers, but my point still stands. When doing a cover of a song made for other bands/people you should never expect something better than the original. U2 is not a cover band, so the only fair way to judge the band is by listening to U2's own material.

What lead me to this song was a comment on Hilary Duff's song "My Generation" also by The Who. It was a good re-make, so I thought I'd try this. Its absolutely Terrible! I wish I had't heard this.
