We know not enough of them care to affect any change in this. In fact, from the video, the cat/dog fur trade appears to be a thriving business. You must realize that not all cultures value animals the way we do. A LOT of them view them as pests, including cats and dogs which - unrestrained - will procreate out of control. This appears to be the case in China. You "fail to see" because you're looking at the problem from your own culture, not from theirs. This is not 'cruel' to them.
This also doesn't reflect on the Chinese culture or people, either. I worked in China and found them to be friendly and cordial - some highly intelligent - and basically fine people. They have no system of controlling breeding cats and dogs, and there are a LOT of them roaming free. Ironically, this 'Fur Trade' is their way of attempting control of the problem by taking what they view as a pest and turning it into a viable business. They are not "evil." It's just their culture.

Differences between cultures can't excuse cruelty, whether it's part of a trade or purely for the sake of it. Two of the most basic instincts all animals have is an appreciation of fear and pain. For people, of any culture, to knowingly and unnecessarily inflict both of those upon another animal is wrong.
There's no "Good" and "Bad" going on here. It's just their way of life, and you can't judge others based on your own set of beliefs. Your definition of 'Cruelty' won't translate into these Chinese' definition, nor theirs to yours. To tell you the truth, I'm more concerned with humanity and the way we treat our fellow man than I am any animal.

OK, so what is to be done? SHOULD anything be done? I say NO. Not because I enjoy cruelty to animals, but because it's none of our business. Obviously, these Chinese don't see the cruelty in it (I'm sure lots of other Chinese do). However, if the bulk of Chinese society doesn't feel the need to do anything, then that's the end of it. It's not our concern. Any such thinking to the contrary is the same thing which has gotten us embroiled in endlass WARS. Why exacerbate the problem?

Now, not buying their stuff is your decision and right. However, that is as far as it should go. Getting our government involved is certainly NOT smart. We know not enough of them care to affect any change in this. In fact, from the video, the cat/dog fur trade appears to be a thriving business. You must realize that not all cultures value animals the way we do. A LOT of them view them as pests, including cats and dogs which - unrestrained - will procreate out of control. This appears to be the case in China. You "fail to see" because you're looking at the problem from your own culture, not from theirs. This is not 'cruel' to them.

This also doesn't reflect on the Chinese culture or people, either. I worked in China and found them to be friendly and cordial - some highly intelligent - and basically fine people. They have no system of controlling breeding cats and dogs, and there are a LOT of them roaming free. Ironically, this 'Fur Trade' is their way of attempting control of the problem by taking what they view as a pest and turning it into a viable business. They are not "evil." It's just their culture.

Differences between cultures can't excuse cruelty, whether it's part of a trade or purely for the sake of it. Two of the most basic instincts all animals have is an appreciation of fear and pain. For people, of any culture, to knowingly and unnecessarily inflict both of those upon another animal is wrong.

I have no idea what their 'official' definition is because it's something I simply never wondered about. However, I'm pretty sure the people in the 'Cat/Dog' fur trade don't cherish such notions about Cats and Dogs that you and I do. Centuries ago, ALL cultures practiced 'Infanticide,' including the Chinese and our own descendents. It was not considered 'cruel' then, only later when our collective values changed as a result of our own advances into a "civilized" society. Et toi, mon ami.

I am from Siberia and I have worn leather and fur all my life. Last year I decided to be animal friendly and bought an expensive fake fur coat... Now I live in Canada, the winter here isn't bad, but I freeze in that coat. But cats and dogs are not meant for this purpose, they are pets, not food, not clothes
