Lol, I bought my Nikon D7000 because I wanted excellent pictures and the 1080p looked awesome, I have used my video mode for about 20 minutes since I bought it, 23rd December 2010, I don't see the point in having video on DSLR's.
@sprayframe, A professional camcorder is dedicated to video and only has video controls, meaning you can adjust everything. With a DSLR you don't get very many video controls and being so much lighter it is harder to get a stable set up without spending money on equipment that a pro camcorder already has built in. In the future there could be 100% video control on a DSLR, but until then, the Pro Camcorder wins when it comes to shear volume of controls and the quality is unmatched.

Plus! take note that D700 only got a 12mp sensor vs 5D 21Mp! Lower Pixel tends to have better iso performance.

@xiaoquan Sorry but no offense, the pixel war era ended many years ago (except for studio projects), with more than 10MP you can print a nice pic on an A4 size which most people would rarely print at all.
The advantage of bigger size pixel is more than just increasing S/N Ratio, but it also make a better dynamic range.
D700 is design for sports, it is obviously should be faster than 5D MKII that is mainly for studio, not fast actions.
Each camera has pros&cons so choose it according to your job.

ok guys, i use a nikon. but lets face facts. i do fashion photography. And it's 1 in a 1000 chance of seeing a professional use a nikon for photography. They all use canons and hasselblads. Nikon is slowly dying if they dont come up with any new cameras that are rumored. They think they are so clever no releasing any news about the new cameras. But in my case, if by the mid of this year, if nikon dont release it's new full frame, i'm getting a canon full frame.
I happen to agree.Unfortunately i assumed a nikon d5000 could do more than a 5 minute video.And have decent sound.At least sound settings.It does do great images.Even my years old canon power shot s5is could set the sound and has stereo sound.If a company claims a camera does video they should also say only 5 min clips on it.So for video i bought a canon powershot sx20is it does good video and can do 20 minutes of 1280x720 on 4 gb.Or you could do 40 on 8 gb card.aa batteries a plus

This is dumb! Nikon is not in a race for Video.. I have a Nikon and its superb on Photography. But Canon has great video features. I'm buying a 550D. But I will still shoot photos with my Nikon. Canon has terrible color noise issues. boosting the ISO on a Canon is horrible. Still with the 1D MkIV. The D3s still kicks but in color and better high ISOs..
Canon is a Great Company! So I will use both Nikon for Stills and Canon for video. PLus I already have a Panasonic HMC150.

The Mark II is a 2005 camera with a bigger sensor. If you judge computers or how good a move is by how big the screen is you watch it on, then it's for you otherwise it's ancient technology.

Agree i switch from Nikon to Canon, my decision wasn´t based on Video capabilities but in full frame. I use to own a D300, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 VR, now I use a 5D MK1, a 24-70 L and 70-200 IS, the results are different, now I compare the images from my D300 and my 5D using the equivalent lenses and i realize that quality is pretty much the same, but canon lenses are fastest focusing in low light also images from canon have a more neutral look, for more saturation or definition i adjust the cam
the D300 is on of 3 or 4 nikon cameras with 720hd video, D5000, D90, and I think the D3s. and also, why buy a dslr if your gonna use it for video? why not just get a camcorder for that matter, a dslr is already pretty bulky and carrying around another several ounces or so wont hurt. and I agree with Ishcoa.
I recently bought a Canon EOS 5D Mark II - all 21 megapixels of it - and was incredibly disappointed. It could not shoot a sharp image except in the brightest light. Colours often looked washed out too. Wasn't happy with my Canon L series 24-105mm lens either. Have switched to Nikon D700 with Nikkor 24-70mm lens - so glad I did and build quality far better too.
@LFKzeGemini I'm with that one too, my D700 may not be able to take video, or have 21 megapixels, but the images produced by that camera are ridiculously sharp, with excellent color rendition and superior ergonomics. I would assume a DLSR would be built for PICTURES and pictures only.......imagine that?

Now I am so so happy with my D700, it is not same with D300, very very different camera. If I examine well the d700 before 5Dii maybe I never see those bad experiences with a Canon.

Good vid! I hope Nikon gets the message. Nevertheless, if I was a camera designer, I would not offer a still dslr with video. Instead, I would simply design a device that you could purchase separately like a battery pack to add video to your still dslr. That way, focus could be on building a better dslr while at the same time offering video to those who want it. What do you guys think of such an idea?
@eatemupup it's a good idea but I think it already exists. depending on the model you purchase, video option are or aren't available on dslr (ex : nikon d300 vs d300s...). I gave up waiting for nikon new dslr ; I bought canon 550d/t2i that I use with nikon lenses..

Guys, common, what's the point in taking 1080 video, i'ts just gonna sit on your computer anyway, and even if you are going to show it friends, 720p is way sufficient. Besides, the files are too big and the time spent downloading your files and the space they occupy is a waste. Makes buy more equipment. Resolution isn't what counts, the quality of your lens is! On that, Nikon is the best.
@cliffhangerscal it depends on what you're doing with your videos. For tv music videos or others broadcasting or commercial stuffs 1080p is the minimum ; for friends and family SD is way sufficient. And I agree Nikon makes superb lenses.

@cliffhangerscal House finale episode was shot with canon mkII (as A,B and C cam), 70% of music videos are shot with canon 5d, 7d, or Lumix GH1... why ? Because it's really handy, lightweight, and a stunning image quality (1080p) and the shallow Depth of field, Lens effects. They use Red for cinema, it's a dream camera by the way.

Apparently you didn't know this, but these type of cameras are designed to make STILL IMAGES, and they do it excellently like Nikon cameras always do. If this somehow makes Canon better than Nikon, you are delusional. I respect Canon and its users, but canon is just waisting time and resources trying to make a still camera shoot video, when you could just go out and buy a smoother, cleaner dedicated camcorder. You want the lens effects? Get a pro camcorder.

I already have a pro camcorder ; the fact is that for many shooting situations, it's really useful to have a small one like DSLR(for travels, low light, small places...etc..). And you're right, I wish Canon (or Nikon that I really love) could make a proper small dediacated camcorder with the quality and the 'lens effect' of their DSLR.

I do agree that at times the size of the DSLR can come in very handy under cramped conditions, travel, ect. I dont do very much video work, so my Nikon's 720p works good enough for me (although 1080 would be a huge plus). I apologize for my incivility in my previous comment, for I can get rather defensive of Nikon ;)

you're right the focus is a real issue on canon. They shot House finale episode with it and had a really hard time with that.. The plus would be a ND filter for the shutter ;)

@LFKzeGemini gotcha. I just thought you were saying the AF had something to do with the cameras being hard to focus. I think both Nikon and Canon DSLRs are equally hard to focus when doing it manually with pull focus. I agree though, we need a D700 replacement ASAP! I rely on my two D300s cameras WAY more than the D700 simply because it does not take video. I am now shooting video and stills back to back. Hope to hear something good soon.

The D3s is an excellent camera, the BEST for low light situations AND the image is simply stunning. If only it could be 1080p and AVCHD codec instead of the crappy mjpeg... I happen to agree.Unfortunately i assumed a nikon d5000 could do more than a 5 minute video.And have decent sound.At least sound settings.It does do great images.Even my years old canon power shot s5is could set the sound and has stereo sound.If a company claims a camera does video they should also say only 5 min clips on it.So for video i bought a canon powershot sx20is it does good video and can do 20 minutes of 1280x720 on 4 gb.Or you could do 40 on 8 gb card.aa batteries a plus

What the hell was that!? Im a canon user but have respect to nikon system .Nikon make better lens sush 24-70 ,14-24 and more, also autofocus with is much better than canon . And in next few months im going to switch from canon to nikon. I got tired about crap canon cameras and some funy lenses like old 24-70 . Do u want to compare nikon d700 with AF from XXl century to canon 5D mark ll with AF from XVl century? Probably new canon 1d mark lV has already some issues with AF in low light , SHAME

This is dumb! Nikon is not in a race for Video.. I have a Nikon and its superb on Photography. But Canon has great video features. I'm buying a 550D. But I will still shoot photos with my Nikon. Canon has terrible color noise issues. boosting the ISO on a Canon is horrible. Still with the 1D MkIV. The D3s still kicks but in color and better high ISOs..
Canon is a Great Company! So I will use both Nikon for Stills and Canon for video. PLus I already have a Panasonic HMC150.

@jjolmyun It's a surprise ; who have ever thought that a still photograph camera would become such a weapon for film makers. It delivers such high quality videos (and photos...) and their sensor are really near from cinema ones. Amazing !
I don't wanna compare, promote or anything ; I just enjoy this video era doing what I like : shooting by all means :)

LOL wad's with the fight. Nikon and Canon are market leader in DSLR.
The recently launched D7000 proves Nikon is not complacent after all, it has also released 9 NEW LENSES this year to add to the arsenal. Just be patient, Nikon always comes up with excellent products.
I used to be disappointed at Nikon lenses which are generally more expensive than Canon's and not many of them has SWM unlike Canon. But hey just give Nikon some time to release their excellent products.

@ScenexAnime for images the d5000 is good but less pixels.I thought what you think.The news here uses nikon.But they have a high way high end 7000$ us one.Plus the lens is more.For video and sound nikon d5000 isnt too good.I caLLED BOTH NIKON AND CANON.oops cap lock.Well i asked why can my s5is canon powershot do such great sound stereo and it has a mic setting for lowering mic volume for bands.Both canon and nikon told me they cant because the cameras would overheat.Buy a canon s5is peace

If you want HD video get a camcorder. Cameras should be mounted on a tripod, set to manual focus, on a subject a fixed distance away that doesn't move towards/away from the camera NOR moves left/right fast (else get jello effect). No thanks! The entire video Reverie was done this way, entire.
The Mark II is a 2005 camera with a bigger sensor. If you judge computers or how good a move is by how big the screen is you watch it on, then it's for you otherwise it's ancient technology.

Agree i switch from Nikon to Canon, my decision wasn´t based on Video capabilities but in full frame. I use to own a D300, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 VR, now I use a 5D MK1, a 24-70 L and 70-200 IS, the results are different, now I compare the images from my D300 and my 5D using the equivalent lenses and i realize that quality is pretty much the same, but canon lenses are fastest focusing in low light also images from canon have a more neutral look, for more saturation or definition i adjust the cam

the D300 is on of 3 or 4 nikon cameras with 720hd video, D5000, D90, and I think the D3s. and also, why buy a dslr if your gonna use it for video? why not just get a camcorder for that matter, a dslr is already pretty bulky and carrying around another several ounces or so wont hurt. and I agree with Ishcoa.

I recently bought a Canon EOS 5D Mark II - all 21 megapixels of it - and was incredibly disappointed. It could not shoot a sharp image except in the brightest light. Colours often looked washed out too. Wasn't happy with my Canon L series 24-105mm lens either. Have switched to Nikon D700 with Nikkor 24-70mm lens - so glad I did and build quality far better too.

@LFKzeGemini I'm with that one too, my D700 may not be able to take video, or have 21 megapixels, but the images produced by that camera are ridiculously sharp, with excellent color rendition and superior ergonomics. I would assume a DLSR would be built for PICTURES and pictures only.......imagine that?

7d has some overheating problems as well, just write on Google ' 7d over heating problem '…. For best ergonomics, minimum faults, strong body and very easy to use designed lenses I can only Nikon…

Now I am so so happy with my D700, it is not same with D300, very very different camera. If I examine well the d700 before 5Dii maybe I never see those bad experiences with a Canon.

Slow focus, soft images, useless autofcus points, % 99 junk... I turn back to Nikon last month... I think they made The 5DMII with the junk parts of 1DS... But Nikon is always great with the quality of second bodies of the tops... For instance D3 is Supreb, and D700 is also superb like D3...

Good vid! I hope Nikon gets the message. Nevertheless, if I was a camera designer, I would not offer a still dslr with video. Instead, I would simply design a device that you could purchase separately like a battery pack to add video to your still dslr. That way, focus could be on building a better dslr while at the same time offering video to those who want it. What do you guys think of such an idea?

@eatemupup it's a good idea but I think it already exists. depending on the model you purchase, video option are or aren't available on dslr (ex : nikon d300 vs d300s...). I gave up waiting for nikon new dslr ; I bought canon 550d/t2i that I use with nikon lenses..
but this game is changing very fast ; panasonic are making proper camcorders with lens mounts to plug different kinds of lenses in... Canon & Sony are working on it too. This is a great era for filmmakers :)

Guys, common, what's the point in taking 1080 video, i'ts just gonna sit on your computer anyway, and even if you are going to show it friends, 720p is way sufficient. Besides, the files are too big and the time spent downloading your files and the space they occupy is a waste. Makes buy more equipment. Resolution isn't what counts, the quality of your lens is! On that, Nikon is the best.

@cliffhangerscal it depends on what you're doing with your videos. For tv music videos or others broadcasting or commercial stuffs 1080p is the minimum ; for friends and family SD is way sufficient. And I agree Nikon makes superb lenses.

@cliffhangerscal House finale episode was shot with canon mkII (as A,B and C cam), 70% of music videos are shot with canon 5d, 7d, or Lumix GH1... why ? Because it's really handy, lightweight, and a stunning image quality (1080p) and the shallow Depth of field, Lens effects. They use Red for cinema, it's a dream camera by the way.

see side by side comparisons on the net
while canon cameras are very good, more pixels does not necessarily
mean better pictures more pixels means less light per pixel on same size formats but one separating factor if all things are close is low light performance

Apparently you didn't know this, but these type of cameras are designed to make STILL IMAGES, and they do it excellently like Nikon cameras always do. If this somehow makes Canon better than Nikon, you are delusional. I respect Canon and its users, but canon is just waisting time and resources trying to make a still camera shoot video, when you could just go out and buy a smoother, cleaner dedicated camcorder. You want the lens effects? Get a pro camcorder.

@cellphonecameraguy I agree with you - They both do their orginal work excellently, still images are wonderful. I already have a pro camcorder ; the fact is that for many shooting situations, it's really useful to have a small one like DSLR(for travels, low light, small places...etc..). And you're right, I wish Canon (or Nikon that I really love) could make a proper small dediacated camcorder with the quality and the 'lens effect' of their DSLR.

I do agree that at times the size of the DSLR can come in very handy under cramped conditions, travel, ect. I dont do very much video work, so my Nikon's 720p works good enough for me (although 1080 would be a huge plus). I apologize for my incivility in my previous comment, for I can get rather defensive of Nikon ;)

you're right the focus is a real issue on canon. They shot House finale episode with it and had a really hard time with that.. The plus would be a ND filter for the shutter ;)

@LFKzeGemini gotcha. I just thought you were saying the AF had something to do with the cameras being hard to focus. I think both Nikon and Canon DSLRs are equally hard to focus when doing it manually with pull focus. I agree though, we need a D700 replacement ASAP! I rely on my two D300s cameras WAY more than the D700 simply because it does not take video. I am now shooting video and stills back to back. Hope to hear something good soon.

The D3s is an excellent camera, the BEST for low light situations AND the image is simply stunning. If only it could be 1080p and AVCHD codec instead of the crappy mjpeg... It would be perfect for both photographers & filmmakers :D

I wouldn't trade or change my D300s for anything. It's close to perfect for what it's suppose to do. So is my new Sony NXCAM for filming.
Don't give us any more half-ass hybrids, jack of all trades, full of limitations and compromises.

@humlakullen because it's very useful for travels (for example). Of course I'll never trade my Sony EX1 but in some shooting cases a DSLR is a better option and makes it easier for us.

I just wish Nikon waited to include that feature until they had perfected it (1080p, autofocus, dedicated stereo mics etc) instead of charging us extra for a "gimmick". Instead they could have worked on boosting the ISO rating, develop a shutter with a much higher life expectancy, more MP etc, etc.
hopefully the "D400" will have all that;-)..
