Food education is a hard issue, I guess, but I don't see its relevance here. It doesn't matter how it's produced, as long as there's enough. There are health issues to be considered in what food is chosen, but it's secondary to food sufficing for all.
If mines are mechanised, people can go home, and get payed just the same as before. The mechanisation wouldn't reduce profits, it would only automatise production, so the only reason to stop paying people is greed.

@buzongtang Technology is increasing dramatically. Back in the 1960s there were no real robots like the simple ones that we have today. Computers in the 1970s would fill up an entire room but had only a faction of the power of today's laptops. As for building, operating and maintaining robots, well let the robots do it for us.

Others have paid into insurance policies for years only to be dropped the moment they get sick. Many more cannot even get insurance policies because they have a "pre-existing condition." Moreover, doctors are sued so regularly that malpractice insurance premiums are at all time highs. And rather than prevent disease, US health only cures. Medical costs are running away from affordability.

Because the only way to return to a 91% tax rate and not crash the economy by strangling small businesses would be to reopen all the tax-loopholes and deductions that also existed under the 91% tax rate. Once you open those loopholes the richest end up with keeping far more of their money than they do now because they can afford to hire way more accountants than the rest of us, while everyone else pays a higher marginal tax rate. (Lower- to upper-middle class).

The problem is not with the USA living beyond it's means. The problem is that the USA no longer competes with the world economy for reasons. One reason, the world economy is off balance due to labor wages. American workers cannot compete. Another reason, the USA was living off riches which did not exist. Wall Street disclosed this to us. So did Madoff of course.
We need a robotic economy. Our probelms could be solved this way. None of us will have to work.

If US labor doesn't compete,you wouldn't produce anything at all. If they're not competitive, in a market economy, the would be put out of work. People are working. So that doesn't add up.
The fact is: you are quite simply spending more money, than you are making. You're producing, but you waste it on vanities, that don't last.

Food education is a hard issue, I guess, but I don't see its relevance here. It doesn't matter how it's produced, as long as there's enough. There are health issues to be considered in what food is chosen, but it's secondary to food sufficing for all.
If mines are mechanised, people can go home, and get payed just the same as before. The mechanisation wouldn't reduce profits, it would only automatise production, so the only reason to stop paying people is greed.

The biggest reason why social issues in the US are more heightened are your liberal roots. Everything that lessens a persons control over anything is automatically deemed socialism, and therefore evil. People still claim that private charities can get the same results. It's not true.
Utopia is by definition almost impossible =) But if no-one believes in it, its chances of occuring decreases even more drastically.

@Mardasee Where are these robots you speak of? The kind of technology you are talking about is decades away. We already have automated factories but those cost money to build, operate and maintain too, as would an army of slave robots. You're right, it is a pipe dream.
And yes, I know wages have flattened in the US over the past several decades, even as things become more expensive and executive bonus packages get bigger and bigger. But "robots" has to be about the nuttiest "solution" here.

Computers in the 1970s would fill up an entire room but had only a faction of the power of today's laptops. As for building, operating and maintaining robots, well let the robots do it for us.

The kind of robots you are talking about don't exist, and there is barely anything remotely resembling them. Whether or not robots like the ones seen in Will Smith's I, Robot will exist anytime soon remains to be seen. In the meantime, we have are in entering a real crisis TODAY. Stop dreaming.

@jmallton Wrong. Plenty of people go without basic treatment they need because they simply cannot afford it. Others have paid into insurance policies for years only to be dropped the moment they get sick. Many more cannot even get insurance policies because they have a "pre-existing condition." Moreover, doctors are sued so regularly that malpractice insurance premiums are at all time highs. And rather than prevent disease, US health only cures. Medical costs are running away from affordability.

However, that doesn't mean I think we should keep our current broken system. That is really what all the recent fuss over health reform is about. Most Americans don't seem to understand the issue.

I just thugged it out and after about 2 years I got lucky. They say luck is being ready to act when oppurtunity arises.
