Now "Pass the Peas...."More Peas"...."Gimme Some More"..."Hot Pants Road" and "Doing It to Death"...THE JB'S - FredWesley,Pee Wee Ellis, and Maceo Parker. Can try but can't duplicate them.
My oh my. The original one finally. Thanks for posting this song. Now folks get on to the the next hit, 'Soul Pride'. You can't beat the JB Horns. Now pass the peas before it get's too funky in here.
@aakkoin You make me want to cry. Jaco Pastorius wrote The Chicken. While I can't deny the swag in this song, Jaco's version just sounds a lot tighter. Maybe if JB and Jaco played it together it would be perfect. Too bad they're both dead.
@laxdude1995 JB's saxman Pee Wee Ellis wrote this... Jaco sure resurrected this and made it his own (and nearly a jazz standard), but there is no way you can say Jaco wrote it! The horns, the groove, the chord progression and the solo space are the same.. cause it's a cover tune, and this is the original. Sorry if I made you cry...
@aakkoin You're right !!! it's is not Jaco, but the saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis i can see now, the version of James Brown is also very good i do not know this version before but look for me very good to !...
First, I heard The Chicken through Jaco Pastorious. Then I did some research and Pee Wee Ellis' name came up. Then I said, hmmm, this is taking me to the root of Soul Music in American, and the world for that matter. Now, I found the source, The King, James Brown (RIP)!
I just listened to Jaco's version, and your statement is a matter of opinion. Brown's band has much more feeling. Clyde Stubblefield ( The Drummer) is accenting every instrument. The bass player ( could be one of three) is riding on Clyde's foot. It is completely tight. The guitar players (Jimmy Noland and Afonso Kellum) are exactly inside of Clyde and the bass player. It sounds like Charles Sherrell on bass. The horn section is tight. Nothing sounds scattered.
@fnknebula nah man, it's all about the bass, this song was meant for bass, and here, you can barely even here the bass, the guitar totally over powers it, which is so not necessary! Plus where's the congas and the bongs at!
@muddamongmen Heeeyyy! Easy, man!!! Some quotes you may find useful : "The Chicken is a cool funk tune composed by Pee Wee Ellis, a saxophonist and important member of James Brown's band in the 60s. The song is made famous by Jaco Pastorius, who made it his signature song." - jazzguitar.be/jaco_pastorius_the_chicken.html .
@nogets "Ellis's composition "The Chicken" was made famous by the electric bass player Jaco Pastorius, who recorded it on his album The Birthday Concert, as well as Invitation. " - Wikipedia - Alfred_"Pee_Wee"_Ellis
@nogets In Jaco's article in Wikipedia you can see that "The Birthday Concert" was released in 1982 and "Invitation" in 1983. James Brown released "The Chiken" in his album "Popcorn" in 1969 (Jaco was 9 years old). So we can presume that Jaco listened to James, and liked, and probably could hear the bass.
@zapwatt I'm french and if you asked me wether I took Jb's or Jaco's stuff on a desert island, I'd say JB, without the slightest hesitation. I like Jaco Pastorius, he did something right for the bass and the music, but in my opinion James left a way bigger and important legacy, and I always prefered this kind of funky music.
@stepsahead , Master musicians can play anything anyway they want, ask John Coltrane. James only hired the very best ,so they could play what he wanted the funk
Someone open a window, Its gettin' FUNKY in here!

Being a huge Zeppelin fan who has heard all of their songs, I would say that they are very influented by this man. It's great music!
I just think that Zep took soul and blues to a whole other level!

This one laid the foundation to the P-funk with its marked downbeat on one.
