then i have to modifie my guitar ?? or how can i combine the pickups , true velvet , air norton and the crunch lab??thats the way which i can obtain that clean sound isnt it??
sorry larry , i have another question , im searching a middle pickup for a clean sound similar to the petruccis sound ... can you recomend me a single coil pickup(middle) for that kind of sound by it self or convining it with the air norton s or a crunch lab please??
John's clean sound is based on the combination of 2 humbuckers in split mode. A single-coil by itself will not produce the same sound. You could try a True Velvet middle pickup (DP175S) in the middle, which should combine with both the neck and bridge pickups.
hi larry , sorry but this is my poroblem : i have a jackson dinky but the problem in the pickups is that the neck pickup is a single coil and i dont like it , i want to change it for a humbucker oviously in a single coil format and i want a pickup with the most similar sound to the liquifire , can yo give some options please??
John Petrucci is the guitar player that completely changed my life. I practice so much more, view guitar playing so much differently and I finally understand what it takes to become a great guitar player.... John you are the man.
I'm looking for a bridge pickup for a charvel socal - made of alder with floyd rose and a maple fretboard. i need something very very hot with a lot of bottom end and mid range, any suggestions larry? I love the tone zone, but i think it's lacking for what i'm after...
Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much gain and delay, the tone is so overprocessed it sounds very muddy. I kinda miss his Ibanez days, he had a much crisper, dynamic tone and there was much more fusiony phrasing in his playing.
@AndyRhoadsVai most of the time he uses a TC 2290 Delay processor. In a recent interview he said that hes now using the delay of an Axe FX2 in the FX loop for the current ADTOE tour.
I was wondering what that thing 5th from the top in the rack was (green, white VH and red VH). It's a bunch of bloody pedals isn't it, duh. He's gonna get his foot stuck doing that.
John has used a number of different pickups in the past, including the Humbucker From Hell, Tone Zone, Air Norton, Steve's Special, D-Sonic and several custom pickups.
-1995 (Ibanez): Tone Zone -Bridge, Humbucker from Hell -Neck
-1995-2000 (Ibanez): Steve's Special -Bridge, Air Norton -Neck
-2000-2007/8 (first Music Man line): "Custom wound" pickups, Bridge was very similar to Steve's Special, the Neck pickup was between AirNorton and Liquifire
-2007/8-2009 (Music Man BFR series, don't know the exact release date): D-Sonic -Bridge, Custom wound Neck pickup
@LarryDiMarzio Larry, I have an ESP Ltd. MH-103 which has 3 pickups, and I was hoping to use a LiquiFire and Crunch Lab like John, but I'm not sure how to make it work. I want a sound as close to John's as possible, but I'm in a bit of a dilemma. Any suggestions? Thanks.
@CoyleCustoms Petrucci MusicMan is discounted to $2,000 and your ESP sells for $299. You have a maple fretboard and hum-single-single layout, so add the cost of pickups to the amount of work/routing costs involved and making it 2 humbuckers doesn't make $ sense. It would cost more than its worth and might not get sound you're seeking. I have the Crunch Lab in three guitars and Liquifire in two. Sell your axe and check Ebay for something like a 2007 Ibanez RGA121 & add CrunchLab/Liquifire set
I agree with the post below that it might be a lot of work and $ to do this. If looks aren't important, you might consider installing an Air Norton S in the neck with an F-spaced Crunch Lab in the bridge, disconnecting and/or removing the middle pickup and replacing the 5-way switch with a 3-way. You wouldn't have to rout the neck cavity, but it's still pretty expensive, and you should give it careful thought before going ahead.
@CoyleCustoms if the guitar has a flat top you could get a new pickguard cut to fit and have space for a bridge and neck humbucker, and rout the guitar body under it. this would be the best way for an attractive finished product, but of course it will be irreversible.
There are many possible reasons why the identical gear might not produce similar results, but it's impossible to guess about the causes without being in the same room to see and hear you play.
Dimarzio I would just like to thank you for making these pickups, I have put them in my guitar and they breathe a whole new life into my sound and my playing. Thanks - Sean Ashe
Look closely at his rig. He's using an EVH Flanger and Phaser. He's a god already, and he's using another gods effects. John Petrucci is fucking awesome.
I was looking around for a new pickup to replace the ones in my phat strat. it has a humbucker in bridge and a single coil in middle and neck, right now i want to replace the bridge pickup with something that has a powerful sound that i could use for some guitar solos. Do you have any suggestions?
There are a lot of possible options. If you will email us at tech@dimarzio.com with a description of how you'd like the sound to be different from what it is with the stock bridge pickup, we should be able to narrow the choices.
everytime i see a video of john petrucci, god damn, it reminds me of just last week when i took an elevator with him haha, he's real cool, still cant believe i took an elevator with him tho..
larry you guys without a shout of a doubt have probably the best passive pickups out there! I have an ESP 7 string with a d-sonic 7 at the bridge, one question I must ask you however is, would I have problems with one pickup drowning out the other if I swapped out the stock neck pickup for a liquifire? I love the sound of the d-sonic and the liquifire but mixing them both is my main concern...thanks alot!
Hey, Larry I hope you see this. I have been using DiMarzio pickups for years now. My main guitar is an Ibanez JS100 with a stock neck pickup and a DiMarzio Evolution in the bridge. I like a very warm neck pickup, but still high output so I can still sweep pick and tap with the next, but I also don't like anything too bassy that will wash out when playing on the higher frets of the lower strings. I am stuck between the Breed, Evolution Neck and Crunch Lab. Any suggestions?
It's only possible to offer good suggestions if we know how you want to change the sound you're getting with the stock pickups. If you can describe this, email us at tech@dimarzio.com and we will make good recommendations.
Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider - (worlds largest and highest-energy particle accelerator) recently discovered that wiring an EBMM BFR F1 into the main synchrotron increased the energy of opposing protons over 500%!
They also surmised that if Petrucci himself was to then play crunch tone through this guitar it would reveal the existence of the Higgs boson! However it would also collapse higher time dimensions into ours, killing everything... that would be one Dramatic Turn Of Events...
@MitchellBeazley you saw em last friday? therefore at montreal am i right? i was there too haha, sick show wasnt it? i even took my hotel elevator with john petrucci, was sick, he's real cool too
EVH said something that stuck with me through all 15 years of playing guitar: "The difference between a good guitarist and a great guitarist is knowing when to pick and when not to pick."
Wha middlet single coil do you recommend to go with the Lab and liquifire in a quite, bright hot rodded strat type guitar? I love the response and sound the two pickups give me, but with a good middle pickup I hope to achieve a more versatile clean and even bluesy tone, if possible when mixed with the other two pickups!
i was juz wondering what pickups i should get for my guitar. i play an extremely wide range of music: from praise and worship christian music all the way to metal. and i mainly use an esp ec401vf.
It depends on what you find lacking in the sound of the stock pickups. We should be able to recommend good choices if you'll email us at tech@dimarzio.com with a description of what you want to change about the stock sound.
@LarryDiMarzio Thanks Larry,im looking to bring out the best heavy tone with punch to my Mesa Roadking.Im looking very hard at John's crunch lab bridge pick up to round out that task.
I've been tryin to build my alt pickin chops, but I'm beginning to think my forte is in the economical, smooth legato style. I just love flowing around the neck without the chop of picking.
@MapleLeafAce That's exactly the same as me!! I have been trying to swap from economy picking to strict alternate recently.. it's so difficult when you're used to something else :(
...im between this pack or broderick pack, i like the 8bit video game kind of sound, but also i like the powerfull and high gain so... what do u recomend , i have a ibanez art 120 les paul and a line 6 IV spider 75 wtts
6:38 "so when you have like a crunch sound" and a humongous amount of distortion yells out of the speakers! if that's a crunch how's you're distortion like?
It isn't possible to answet your question without more information. Please email tech@dimarzio.com with this question, and describe how you want the sound to be different from the sound of the stock pickups.
It can do this in the bridge position, but no pickup can produce artificial harmonics in the neck position that are as powerful as harmonics in the bridge position.
I'm thinking about the Liquifire as a bridge position pickup but I'm a bit hesitant on the fact that I don't know if it will produce that "je ne sais quois" that a rhythm pickup has. And if the tone is versatile enough I'd rather just have one pickup all together and have stronger output. I guess I'll have to try it out for myself....
I can definitely say a LiquiFire works well in the bridge position, but there's no way to be certain in advance if any pickup will do exactly what you want. Even if a pickup works perfectly for you in one guitar, it may sound entirely different in another guitar because of the differences in individual pieces of wood.
Yes, I most definitely agree. I, personally, am a "tone comes from your fingers"; now, I understand that it has certain limitations. If one pickup was able to provide a crunchy rhythm and smooth leads based on my fingers I'd say that is a great pickup. All this is being said within reasonable logic. I don't expect a perfect hybrid. But thank you for helping me make my decision. I think I'll get myself a Liquifire.
I'm a Blues/Rock/Pop guitarist ala, John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Johnson. And i'm looking for some noiceless (as possible) and middle/High output pickups for a Strat. What do you reccomend? If the amp was a Marshall JVM410H, then what pickups could you guys reccomend? I dont know that much about guitar teching, so sorry for my unknowingness-thing. :) I just know that most Singlecoils are noisy.
None of these players are known for using medium or high-output pickups. The basic pickups I would normally recommend for this type of sound are an Area 58 in the neck, Area 67 in the middle and Area 61 in the bridge. If you feel you need hotter pickups, you might try the Injector neck and bridge models with the Area 67 in the middle
@LarryDiMarzio Eric johnson dosent use high out put pickups? would you mind telling me what he uses? Or rather what year strat pickups he perfers...if you know that is haha...if not its kewl :)
thanks man i appreate you taking time to read my letter! ROCK ON! \w/
Eric uses an HS-2 in single-coil mode in the bridge position of some of his Strats. For the most part, he uses single-coil Strat pickups in the other positions on his Strats and vintage humbuckers on his Gibsons. He uses different vintage Strat pickups on different guitars, and you can get some idea of this by seeing the descriptions of his pickups on the EJ signature Strat Fender currently makes.
@LarryDiMarzio Cool man thanks! Im currently using lace pickups in my strat...which I heard eric claption, David gilmore, and buddy guy used....havent gotten it back from the shop yet but I think its gonna rock...thank you for replying itw as helpful!!! :)
@LarryDiMarzio actually sir I have one more question...my question is on the j.s. pickups (more joe, and fred) whats the difference between the pickups in the js1200 and the js 1000? I jave always wonderd this...but dont know the space....thank you again!!!
@LarryDiMarzio Cool...so if you dont mind could you explain the technical out put of the PAF pro vs the PAF joe? Is it an out put difference, mid difference, trebble difference, wiring difference?
I hate it when people say that the cable doesn't make a difference. I have 3 different cables at home and they all make the tone sound VERY different.
It's impossible to say without knowing what guitar and amp you have. Email us the info at tech@dimarzio.com so we can give you useful recommendations.

A reverse-polarity Red Velvet should work. The model number is DP174S.

@LarryDiMarzio Thank you very much. Will look into a Red velvet soon : )

i was juz wondering what pickups i should get for my guitar. i play an extremely wide range of music: from praise and worship christian music all the way to metal. and i mainly use an esp ec401vf.

@mymama12314
It depends on what you find lacking in the sound of the stock pickups. We should be able to recommend good choices if you'll email us at tech@dimarzio.com with a description of what you want to change about the stock sound.

Larry, i was woundering why the bridge pick up has a metal strip ??? and what the reason is for it
TheCelticknights 4 months ago
@TheCelticknights
The bar polepiece helps produce a fatter sound with a tight magnetic field that works well for the specific sound we were going for.

MapleLeafAce 4 months ago
@MapleLeafAce That's exactly the same as me!! I have been trying to swap from economy picking to strict alternate recently.. it's so difficult when you're used to something else :(

I wonder if the Liquifire will still provide all the artificial harmonics that a bridge position pickup needs with the fat highs and tight lows...
drrojogochu 5 months ago
@drrojogochu
It can do this in the bridge position, but no pickup can produce artificial harmonics in the neck position that are as powerful as harmonics in the bridge position.
LarryDiMarzio 5 months ago 3
@LarryDiMarzio
I guess I'll have to try it out for myself....
drrojogochu 5 months ago
@drrojogochu
I can definitely say a LiquiFire works well in the bridge position, but there's no way to be certain in advance if any pickup will do exactly what you want. Even if a pickup works perfectly for you in one guitar, it may sound entirely different in another guitar because of the differences in individual pieces of wood.
LarryDiMarzio 5 months ago
@LarryDiMarzio
I think I'll get myself a Liquifire.
drrojogochu 5 months ago
Hey Mr. Dimarzio.
Odinsgade 5 months ago
@Odinsgade
LarryDiMarzio 5 months ago
@LarryDiMarzio
Oh okay. My music teacher told me that higher output equals more sustain.
And i'm a fan of sustained notes.
But these Singlecoils will be as noiceless as possible?
Odinsgade 5 months ago
@LarryDiMarzio Eric johnson dosent use high out put pickups? would you mind telling me what he uses? Or rather what year strat pickups he perfers...if you know that is haha...if not its kewl :)
thanks man i appreate you taking time to read my letter! ROCK ON! \w/
metachozoite 5 months ago
@metachozoite
LarryDiMarzio 5 months ago
@LarryDiMarzio Cool man thanks! Im currently using lace pickups in my strat...which I heard eric claption, David gilmore, and buddy guy used....havent gotten it back from the shop yet but I think its gonna rock...thank you for replying itw as helpful!!! :)

@LarryDiMarzio actually sir I have one more question...my question is on the j.s. pickups (more joe, and fred) whats the difference between the pickups in the js1200 and the js 1000? I jave always wonderd this...but dont know the space....thank you again!!!
metachozoite 5 months ago
@metachozoite
Both guitars have a Fred in the bridge position. The JS1000 has a PAF Pro in the neck. The JS1200 has a PAF Joe in the neck.
LarryDiMarzio 5 months ago
@LarryDiMarzio Cool...so if you dont mind could you explain the technical out put of the PAF pro vs the PAF joe? Is it an out put difference, mid difference, trebble difference, wiring difference?
again thanks man!!!
metachozoite 5 months ago
I hate it when people say that the cable doesn't make a difference. I have 3 different cables at home and they all make the tone sound VERY different.
