He would have perform a stall or stall turn to right side to close canopy by hand or by wind forces. Any how in this condition he did right decision to land & evaluate the cause of incident. Helmet with visor is very use full in this situation as well.

stalling is reaching a higher angle of attack that theres no lift acting upon the wing does not mean theres no wind to still push the canopy out and therefore easily closed

Keep his head protected from banging around in the cockpit in the event of that happening.

If it was a worst case senerio, like say... crashing full speed nose first straight into the ground... then there is little to nothing that can be done.

But if so... why do anything in life to protect ourselves coming from your logic? Why be in a car with a seat belt, airbags, and a crash cage, crumple zones, when a train is going to hit.
