"Blended Body" aircraft have a tail assembly and may have structure OUTSIDE of the wing body.

A true "flying wing" is a tailess aircraft with crew quarters and/or other areas included inside the wing body.

The Northrop "1929 Flying Wing" was not a flying wing, it had a tail assembly.

It was not a failure, it was a successful step toward the N1M, which is considered to be Northrops first "flying wing". It's first flight was on July 3, 1940.

The Horten Brothers successfully flew the Ho5-B in 1938

Both were piston powered aircraft.

in 875, Abbas Ibn Firnas, a Muslim, sucessfully flew his glider, which crashed on

landing because it did not have a tail, making it a flying wing.

"Before the war the H II was demonstarted at many air shows in which it was put into nose dives of up to 450 km/hr. In 1938 the New York Times published an article with a full page picture of the H II and the headline "Flying wing over Berlin". Shortly thereafter the US company Northrop was awarded a contract to develop flying wings."

"In 1935 Dynamit Nobel AG in Troisdorf sponsored the construction of the H Va. It was the first plastic (composite) aircraft in the world. In 1938 the H III with a 20 m wingspan was constructed as a high performance glider for the Rhön contest."

If you watch my video named Northrop Flights 1, a video that was produced by Northrop Corporation,

it states 3 July, 1940 as the date of the first N1M flight. My father worked on the YB-35 and XB-49 flying wings at Northrop in the 1940's. He also was a team member and wing expert on the N9M restoration project at Planes of Fame Air Museum. We still operate the N9M at POF.

Would anyone be knd enough to tell me when the first jet-powered 'flying wing' was made air-worthy? Was it the Horton 229 prototype that the Americans brought back from Germany?

@AryanScot The first flying wing with gets was the Horton IX V2 which flew with the junkers Jumo 004 engines. It flew in December 1944. On its second flight it outdid an Me 262 in a simulated dogfight.

The Nazi had all kinds of spy and agents at US Patent Office at North American Flying Show. But Northrops 1929 was powered flight while the Horten Brothers both Majors in the SS were using glider and slave labor to build all their aircraft designs stolen from Northrop. Nrothrop was so far ahead of Hortons.

My dad worked in a lot of famous programs including at Northrop with Jack Northrop on the YB-35 and YB-49 bombers, and he worked about 10 years on the restoration of the N9M which is now flown by the Planes of Fame Air Museum. I have been digging up these one of a kind and extremely rare videos from my dads collection which I inherited. Dad worked in military aviation for 53 years. Check out my video called, "Military Aviation" for a list of all the types of military aircraft he worked on.
