  • I'm sorry but this is review is just bullshit.

  • wow a 6.7 ranting managed to win 5 oscars! how come? I guess those people know more than oscar judges!

  • It's amazing how these four can talk about "The Artist" without uttering one word about the music. This film has one of the finest scores I've ever heard.

  • saw all films nominated for an oscar & enjoyed them all, excpet tree of life, but there was something special about the Artist. Everyone but Ben has their head up their ass. I think theyre pissed that everyone liked it because they feel silent films are supposed to be reserved for film buffs like themselves. they discredit the film along with people who like it so they can feel superior. I wanted to punch that bearded hipster in the face when he said berenice was poorly cast. She was fantastic!

  • As the guys recommend, watch Citizen Kane (which this film steals a lot from), and watch Keaton/Chaplin. You guys been sold.

  • This is easily one of the best movies I saw in my life (and I did see a few). It is HIGHLY creative, innovative, FULL of PURE acting-skills. And the technical quality of this production is in many moments simply astounding. The story is beautiful. And historically, this thing does something big, as well: It re-unites formerly split ages of movie-making in an almost magical way. It is just wrong to compare it to a Chaplin´s movie, as this is a piece of OUR times.

    Just awesome, FANTASTIC!

  • BEST PICTURE

    BEST DIRECTOR

    BEST ACTOR

    Deal WIth Bitches!

  • @cvill03 I love dealing with bitches

  • Tintin - Rotten Tomatoes- 74%

The Artist - rotten Tomatoes- 97%

    Enough said!

  • @drkryan21 Yeah cuz rotten tomatoes opinion matters

  • @MysteryBounty: sorry to break the news to you but it does matter. Look up the correlation of between films having a high RT rating and their probability of being a nominee AND winning the BP.

If you're disappointed that comic book movies aren't nominated but that's the way it is.

  • Just saw this movie yesterday. Don't waste your money. At most, it was...meh.

  • @rybpo7

It's great for a silent movie. Sorry if you can't that.

  • I love silent films. I did not love this. The actors were great, the shot for the most part were beautiful, I just found the story too bland.

  • subscribed to you after watching your picks of the year, unsubscribed 15 mins later after listening to your negative comments on this wonderful film.

  • The whole discourse concerning historical accuracy felt utterly irrelevant, but I appreciated your thoughts on the film. I liked it, and I think I'd like to see more silent movies because of it.

  • I personally loved the film! It was great watching something that was so self aware and really played with the medium it was presented in.

That said though, I still wanted 'Midnight in Paris' to take the gold!

  • Looks like these folks are gonna be proved wrong on February 26 as the way things are shaking out (this message posted after the BAFTAs).

  • That Matt guy shouldn't be reviewing this film. I suppose I understand the endless, annoying comparison, but to say they borrowed heavily from Gene Kelly is too much. I realize that's what a number of people think, cause most people have seen "Singing In The Rain", but just as Gene Kelly fashioned much of his screen characters after DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, just as Jean Dujardin did for George Valentin. This Matt guy even likened George Valentin to Rudolf Valentino! Clearly he hasn't a clue.

  • Overrated/Hype. Overrated/Hype. Overrated/Hype. Overrated/Hype. Overrated/Hype.

This movie was very well made. The Score was great and the acting was spot on. Where this movie failed was the plot. This movie only "worked" (and I use that term loosely here) because it was a silent film. The middle portion of the film was excruciatingly dull and bored be to tears. It was a fitting tribute to the silent film era but as of 2011 it is no where near best picture quality.

  • I agree with Ben (for once). While this movie is clearly Oscar bait, it still holds up under it's own merits and could be enjoyed by the casual viewer. While it's true that a lot of people oversell this film, I think they try to counteract it by massively underselling it's merits. The story isn't "Singin' In The Rain", it's darker and more human than that, and could succeed as it's own entity without the kitsch silence or black and white, but it's presence adds to the film's unique experience

  • i don't believe this. he considers a CGI dog to be better then a real one? where is this guys brain?the problem is non of these people appreciate the processes that the film industry had to go through to get to where it is today and that is what this film is about appreciating the changes and difficulties that the industry had to go through along with the actors of the time. it not about making a good movie its about acknowledging and appreciating the past and cherishing the classics.

  • These guys are pretentious clowns!

  • My god, you people are not funny!

  • most critics liked this, but these people are entitled to their opinion.

  • Absolutely loved this movie. Not a huge film buff or anything, just like watching them.

  • what a bunch of fucking idiots. unbelievable. they want to review films, but they dont know anything about film or what to look for.

  • @SeerSucker1981 also, mankoweicz or whatever his yiddish name is sucks both here and on the young turks. everyone i know thinks hes a douchebag prickface that only hurts liberal causes with his fake anger and pretend outrage

  • a lovely gimmick? no. just no.

  • I will say that the movie would have worked better with a less French looking Actress as Peppy Miller :P And I will say I prefured Cinema Paradiso in terms of Nostalgia, but it is a great film none the less :D

  • I got bored just watching the trailer for 'the artist'

i've seen silent films before, they're not fun

  • @FukPhysics Agree with you

  • My favorite is when John Goodman mouths, "Who the fuck are you? Get the fuck out of here." But no title card. Hmmm.

  • saying that the artist only works because its a silent movie and wouldn't work with sound is ridiculous singin in the rain wouldn't work without songs, would half of the cartoon movies work in real life. the whole point is you find a medium that best tells the story. its silent and black and white because that fits the story.

  • Ben doesn't get it.

If you want to do something you should do it right.

And Want to talk about inaccurate? Thor the movie!

A complete rape of my country's religion which STILL exists and is well and live today.

  • i just love WTF.. just perfect. i agree with this review so much, it's a good movie through and through, but that's all it was. good. i give it a 7

  • NEVER TRY TO ANALYZE....ART"

I ABSOLUTELY HATE CRITICS AND REVIEWERS'

THEY SHOULD ALL GO AND GET A REAL JOB'

  • Comment removed

  • I'm just going to assume from now on that all these overall rating are out of 7

  • I don't think I've really agreed with a single review I've seen from these people. I've been watching a lot of silent films lately, but I don't think you need to be lover of them or unfamiliar with them to appreciate the charms of this movie. I think you guys need to get off your freaking high horses and just enjoy a movie for what it is.

  • I didn't sense nostalgia in this at all, it was fresh and cute as hell.

  • I love Christy's laugh at 3:25 it's so cute.

  • "This films shows why silent films are so fun to watch".

No, it doesn't. It shows what films used to be, and then what they became. The film is about progression of film, that silent film is a dead art.

No one will walk out thinking 'I want to watch more silent films!', and if they do they will be disappointed. This film took every Silent Film cliche and poked fun at it, in a good way.

I really liked the film, but don't kid yourselves that silent films are great! They are part of film history

  • @jamesthemod: if you don't think silents cannot be great it's cause you've never seen Abel Gance's "Napoleon".

  • @lukebccb I'm seeing that in Oakland in late March!

  • @vascreenwriter: so am I. Me and a couple friends already got our tickets. I only got to see a truncated version of it in film school and I look forward to see the full thing.

  • Everything about this movie was great.

  • Ben there was a black general in World War II and a movie depicting him would not be historically inaccurate. I prefer to leave you in your ignorance so go look it up. My problem with Ben Mankiewicz is not his ignorance of black history, that's to be expected, but the fact that floating at the top of his feeble mind, when contemplating an historically inaccurate film role it is a black general in world war II that stands out in his mind. What about a white person playing a famous Pharoah?

  • @tonjakahinkson2000 that's not the point, obviously there were some black generals throughout world war two, but in general they weren't that many and were quite rare, you argument is somewhat idiotic in a sense, as it takes the idea of if something existed rather than if something was in the majoirty

  • isn't the problem here that the panel has seen many many silent films todays audiences have seen none?

  • Can we get rid of the background noise when the cameras are rolling, please?

  • Apparently the only two theaters in my area don't find this film profitable because they don't have it. The theaters that do have it are too far away so I have to wait until it comes to dvd or until the cheap theater gets it. Corporatist asses!!

  • I usually like what Ben has to say, but Alonso is clearly the only person who knows anything this time.

  • The Artist is gonna win Best Picture. Not stating it cause I want it to (though it deserves it) but because I have some VERY interesting anectodal evidence... apparently at some Hollywood awards show, directors, producers, actors and other industry folks were literally lining up to meet Michel Hazanavicius, Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo to congratulate them and tell them how much they loved The Artist.

These directors, producers and actors are the ones that choose the Oscar winners.

  • Believe the hype... these people are insane.

  • WTF is up with all thoise talking noise in the background

  • I bought this movie. I bought the comedy, I bought the tragedy, I bought the beauty, and as little seriousness as I take Oscar-talk and the Oscars in general, I buy the Oscar hype! To call this film a gimmick would be to undermine how universally entertaining this movie is. If you love MOVIES, not just silent films, you can love this movie.

  • Remember guys, these people called The Human Centipede beautiful

I don't trust these reviewers at all

  • Comment removed

  • Hmmmm. You guys gave "Captain America" a 7.5 and a 6.7 to "The Artist"? I get it that you guys aren't enthralled of The Artist but a a 6.7 for The Artist while a 7.5 for Captain America?

My outlook and opinion of all four of these folks and this review groups as a whole really has just taken a big drop.

  • YES. Thank you for restoring sanity to the atmosphere around this film. It's charming, but not 2011's best.

  • Is it me, or does Alonso look like Sully from Monsters Inc.?? :)

  • @dwalden74 its you

  • I think Ben is the best reviewer of these people. Keep on turkin Ben. =)

  • The guy with the glasses criticizes the silliest things. I was hoping to hear about the actual movie, not what someone looked like.

  • this review sucks

  • i'd like to see jonathan kim if it wasn't at the expense of losing one of these guys.

  • give christy a shorter boxs to stand on; it makes matt look shorter - and she's cute as hell..

  • Oh, and whatever happens in the awards run, Bérénice Béjo is gonna become big. Not just by her beauty but her performance is something that hasn't been seen in decades (Jean Dujardin too).

This actress is soon gonna be inundated with offers from the industry.

  • Whoa these guys don't think Joan Crawford nor Greta Garbo were NOT "exotic looking"?

    ESPECIALLY Garbo?

  • I saw the trailer for this movie when I went to see Martha Marcy Mae Marlene, and it looks like the most pretentious bs ever.

  • that guy's an idiot: "tintin's much better, it's not in black an white!" god I hope that was sarcasm...

  • @vincentvetra Yes, that was sarcasm.

  • Go with the Rotten Tomato numbers. This film is awesome. Don't go for the Oscar hype just because the Oscars have a track record for picking bland flavor of the month films over the ones that will actually stand the test of time. This film is far better than most films that win the Oscar. So far, this seems to be the only negative review I've come across.

  • However, I have no doubt that this is the best movie since 2001, so yes it's better than Schindler's List, and it's in my top twenty best movies of all time. Even with all the hype and my own high expectations of a silent movie, it still exceeded everything I could imagine and it should be hailed as a work of art like the Mona Lisa or Beethoven's Ninth Symphony!

  • @CHANSK3913900012

    Schindler's list is awful.

  • I don't like to call opinions wrong, but these people are wrong. You cannot compare this movie to any others because it's better than most of them, and yes, that includes Singing in the Rain and City Lights, two movies I'll cherish to my grave. But, I should also make note of two things. One, I have literally prayed most of my life for someone to make a silent movie, and two, a rule of mine is never overly praise a new movie untill it's had twenty years to age.

  • @CHANSK3913900012: seriously it's gonna be a few years before we know where "The Artist" stands out in history. Look at "Boogie Nights". It took about a decade before people began to appreciate how good it was. But one thing I already know is that "The Tree of Life" WILL definitely be seen as a great movie in the future. It's just one of those kinds of movies that needs for persons to reflect back on them to appreciate it.

  • Some silent stars couldn't move on. Emil Jannings' Hollywood career ended because of talkies. Why is it so odd for a character like George Valetin, a foreigner, to have been nervous about sound. Sound did effectively end careers. I do agree that the film got dull in the middle but to call the film a gimmick is a downright insult.

  • matt! grow some sideburns! LOL

  • those on the right are morons and i would love to spill my drink on them and blatantly ignore them as i laugh dancing away...the ones on the left (from the viewer's perspective ((dunces)))...are qualified to be...simply: Be. this movie is a cultural counterpoint ... and i need to avoid those on the right :especially when they talk like the gilmore girls.

  • can I get on this show?

  • The only thing I was nostalgic for was a good story. And I found it.

  • All I hear is everyone talking in the background of the tyt studio.

  • love the french la haine best frech film beautiful country.

  • I miss Cenk

  • Man, these guys can't get past the wall of acting and story. They totally missed the point of "The Artist" (except Ben, who made some valid points).

  • Any film nut knows that for true silent film nostalgia, a Guy Maddin film is the place to be. This looks like a rehash of a tired Hollywood story, focusing too much on actors per usual.

  • @qwe123303 This movie is fantastic. Go see it for yourself before you judge.

  • Once again Alonso is so wrong.

  • I think Matt's criticism here that it wouldn't work as a non-silent film doesn't have merit--why should it? And the criticism seems to be entirely that it has found a devoted audience.

  • Christy...i don't know if you read the comments, but i find you very pretty. :)

  • I saw it without hearing any hype at all, and I thought it was the best movie I'd seen in years. None of these reviewers mention the cinematography, the irony, the symbolism, or the postmodernism of this film, all of it there to be relished, but none of it crucial for overall enjoyment. If you're 'high brow', this film is art. If you're not, this film is fun.

  • @philipsidney Lies. There is no way anyone could have seen this film without any hype. No one would actually go to see a 'Silent film' in 2012 UNLESS there was high. Get off your high horse.

Do you really care what a bunch of You Tube strangers think about your reasons for seeing the film? Just say you like it.

  • @jamesthemod: oh really? I have a video library of well over a hundred silent DVDs/tapes ranging from the earliest 1895 to "Modern Times" and when I heard someone had made a silent film in 2011 I I went and saw the film in mid-December and didn't need any "hype" as I, as a silent fan, wanted to see what the producers had done. Just because YOU think it's so (hype based) doesn't mean it's so/you're right.

  • @lukebccb Well unfortunately this is called Youtube. Ya know, that site where people can come to, watch videos, clips, songs, movie reviews and then like... comment on them. If you actually read what I put, i put that I actually liked this film. What I was commenting on was the fact that one of the reviews said this will make people watch more silent films, it wont. If you watch silent films, you will love this. But it will not make people love silent film who have never seen one.

  • @jamesthemod Re: "Lies. There is no way anyone could have seen this film without any hype. No one would actually go to see a 'Silent film' in 2012 UNLESS there was high. Get off your high horse."

The only hype I heard was that "The Artist" was a new silent movie, and, contrary to your assumption, I went to see it because I love silent movies. I would see any silent movie, whether old or new, that came to the big screen. Don't be so quick to judge people, let alone insult them.

  • @philipsidney I don't believe I insulted anyone. I merely stated my opinion. Why are people so quick to take offense to people opinions.

If you think like that, why do you come on Youtube?

  • @jamesthemod Your post started by accusing me of lies, then continued, "Get off your high horse"--and you don't think you insulted anyone? How boorish can you get?!

  • @philipsidney My issue is that this movie is too much about showing the cinematography, symbolism, postmodernism and whatnot that it's forgotten to tell a solid story. I still think it's a lovely gimmick, but definitely not my favorite movie of the year *cough Super and Drive*.

  • A movie that is just "a gimmick" gets more discussion time than any other movie they've reviewed in weeks. Maybe they underrated it?

  • guys do a review of ' The Gaurd', i want to see straight 10's. Its an Irish comedy and trust me you wont regret watching it.

  • @93hickey Agreed.It's hilarious.

  • @93hickey * The Guard*

  • I agreed with Alonso here. Cool review.

  • I HATE ALONSOS REVIEWS ..HE ALWAYS COMPLAINING ABOUT THINKS THATS DOESNT REALLY MATTER FOR THE WHOLE MOVIE

  • @dramatish They all kinda strike as really pompous. They come of thinking that they think they are way more intelligent and clever than they really are as is the problem with most film critics. Whether that's really the case or not, they all annoy. Yet for some reason I like watching them...

  • @dramatish 2 thumbs up for that

  • Thank you for keeping WTF Cenk-free and yet still making fun of him from time to time. I love Cenk but he's no movie pro.

  • @Randomambusher But Cenk is the only person I really trusted as a reviewer. The others are more.. what do the artsy people think I should be saying

  • @Randomambusher But Cenk is the only person I really trusted as a reviewer. The others are more.. artsy

  • @Randomambusher LOL agreed, I actually totally forget he's not even part of WTF now and then xD

  • @Randomambusher Agree, but would like to see Jonathan Kim once in a while.

  • @Randomambusher Yep since he gave 7 to Grownups.

  • that idiot strolling in the background is annoying

  • i used to watch silent movies with my grandmother when i was younger it allowed me to stay up until 2am and this is a ha bisky upload

  • OMG! This review is pissing me off. It's too nostalgic, & there's not enough nostalgic? WTF??? You three idiots if wanted a nostalgic go see Sunset Boulevard!!!

  • Over Hype? 96 Rotten Tomatos more then The Descendants which has 89 Roteen Tomatos. A- from Yahoo rating then The Descendants B. If there is anything "Over Hype" it's George Clooney, the quote-on-quote "Golden Boy or King of Hollywood"???? PLEASE!!!!

  • I watched this and honestly Midnight in Paris is way more captivating than this movie.

Its all the hipster/Golden Globe hype behind the movie that its getting so much attention.

  • Atchity (if that's who's talking) is wrong about silent film stars -- while there certainly were a lot of traditional "good girl" waspy stars, there was a lot of stars like Theda Bara and Pola Negri who were big stars, specifically cast as "bad girl" exotic and sexy leading ladies during the silent days.

So there would definitely be a place for someone with Bejo's looks in the silent days.

  • @prodprod this.

  • I enjoy it when guys stroll at the background... #real

  • Alonzo will pick the littlest things as a way to justify hating a movie. I bet if i asked him to give me his 5 favorite movies that are set in a specific time I could find something so trivial as she didn't look white enough to truly be an actress then.

  • I love the intros for whattheflick

  • alonso uh christy uh matt

  • Why doesn't it surprise me that Alonso Duralde would love this film? He always seems to pick the most pretentious film as his favorite. Out of all the critics on this show, he most closely fits the type of individual who votes in the Academy to select who will get the Oscar. The more detached the film is from what regular people would call entertaining, the more Alonso is likely to enjoy it. Out of all the critics on What The Flick, he is the one I can relate to the least.

  • @alphacause Have you SEEN it?

  • 7th bitches

  • wait, what was Ben's number? I seemed to have missed that...... xD

  • french people are so "pretencieux"...

  • Wooo! second. Ha

  • @rafaelnadalismyboo Yeah, joke's on you.

  • i win?

  • @TsugaruClan :(
