O.k, sure, KRS-One has covered pressing and vital topics, built the Temple of Hip-Hop, given intellectual muscle to conscious content, displayed incredible skills - but if we're talking about an MC whose flow and use of metaphores and punchlines are close to being perfection personified, it has to go to brother Rakim. Joints like the 18th letter and Waiting for the World to End show how versatile Rakim is. He's like a boxer, like the the Ali of Hip-Hop: makes it look easy, but he's lethal.
@Legendism360 But, that's not to say that KRS isn't technical and Rakim doesn't have content. It's hard to compare them. Personally, if someone asks me who the "best ever" was, I'd go with Nas, but Rakim and KRS-One are probably better.
Actually, Rakim has been awarded the title of God MC, and when you hear his impeccable, incisive rhyme schemes, it's no wonder! Just his flow, astute lyricism makes him untouchable. But, naturally, KRS has given so much substance and longevity to the Hip-Hop Kulture, and for that we must be eternally gratefull. Both are extraordinary brothers; one is a spiritual ambassador, the other a lyrical and mathamatical architect.
R is my dude but that sound of the police is a hard cut I did not realize that track was that hard it beats everything that is out now in 2011 for real.
Poet, philosophers. Rakim and KRS-One are the two who transformed Hip Hop to what Shakespeare would Define as Poetry. these two brought conscious into Hip Hop. But Rakim literatura is... i cant comprehend.
Wow! this is hard one! Rakim for me though! Those internal rhymes, multisyllabic flow and content. KRS is definitely a close number 2 but Rakim is sick! He's just dope!
@westside159: And so is Rakim, spitting verses like "To me a writer's block is a good block to write on." I saw him live this year - the brother had every cat on their feet, and while the support acts were dope, Rakim was spitting fire...Depth in thought, erudite lyricism, ebonics, flow and use of punchlines and intricate metaphysical skillz are what brother rakim is all about. KRS is not in denial; he tells cats that Rakim is God Mc
Rakim's The 18th Letter is so much about flow and content, it sounds like this brother is just having a deep conversation, then you realise: WTF? How did he do that? Just straight-up dope, no other cat makes it sound so easy yet goes so deep.
As I kid I liked BDP and Eric B and Rakim. But Rakim was unreal. He just flowed so naturally and it was revolutionary. I never heard someone so good. I know people who hated rap music but liked Eric B and Rakim if you can believe that....

KRS-ONE is the epitome of what an emcee is. Endless hits with classic albums, incredible lyrical content, amazing live shows, longevity, unlimited amount of flows, battle raps, knowledge raps, all elements of hip-hop culture represented by him. He’s what all emcees should strive to be. There’s not a rapper dead or alive that’s better than KRS. Real Talk.
Rakim lyrically in my humble opinion is number 2 all time behind only KRS.
Both are great and either one could call themselves the best rapper ever. In the late 80's I would have said Rakim. But in the 90's - present, I gotta say KRS. Mainly because KRS can make a rap about ANY topic. His subject matter (because the subject matters) is the one thing that gives him the edge. In addition, when I hear the both of them rhyme in the present, Rakim sounds dated to me. Just my opinion.
If Eminem isn't in everyone's Top 10, you aren't loving hip-hop for what it is. Big L, Big Pun, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Vinnie Paz, Tech N9ne... all of them are MAJOR lyricists. And Em can hang with them all. And this is for all you "Recovery" fans. "Infinite" alone showed his lyrical ability.
When you talk about lyrical creativity Rakim is slick with it, but come lyrical creativity with actual substance and relevance and no one comes close to KRS. Rakim is in my top three, but when I look at an artist I look at the whole picture. Who has more styles than KRS? No one comes close at all. He has the old heads and new schools respect. And has never ever stopped. More albums, more lives shows, and he is a producer. I can go on and on.
Rakim. Although KRS is up in the rank of being one of the true starters of hip hop, especially with his battling skills, which is believed what hip hop was all about when it started. Rakim the god who has amazing flow and lyrical masterpieces. But what rakimthegod1 said, K-Rino is probably the most skilled lyrically, but Rakim the almighty one overall.
Hey can someone give me some of Rakims best songs? I mean i would choose Nas over Rakim any day. But that's just my biased opinion. I only heard one song from Rakim and didn't like it at all. Any reccomendations?
@TheRoddiggy in most other situations i would agree with you. however, this is hip hop and is a competitive movement. no other music genre has battles and just talks about themselves trying to be the greatest. hell, hip hop grew on battling. so, for me, ranking it is ;P
LEGENDARY rakim in my opinion is the greatest of all time because tupac and biggie both has too little albums and songs and krs ONE IS ANY ANY TRUE HIP HOP FAN'S TOP 5
Love KRS-One and what he meant to Hip-Hop, but NO ONE is f**kin with Rakim Allah's "Follow The Leader." That joint was a visual, lyrical masterpiece. NOTHING KRS did matched the artistry of that joint. RAKIM...
Both are agelessly dope, fluidly incomparable in their individuality, which is why comparing them is not only impossible, it's positively offensive. But...if we're talking off-the-dome freestyle devastation, Rakim admittedly does have an edge: empirical words drop from his brain to his tongue like a gumball machine. His flow is honey-butter smooth. The "R" is like the George Wahington of Mount Rushmore in the Hip-Hop game - but beside him resides the visage of KRS and Justin Bieber. kidding.
Fire burns in me Eternally Times Eternity Followers turn on me They’ll be in a mental infirmary Determinedly Advance technology Better than Germany Since the first days you know of Til the last days is over I was always the flower I made waves for Noah From a compound To the anatomy To the breakdown Of a atom Some of my rap patterns Still surround Saturn From the ancient hieroglyphics To graffiti painted pictures I study I know the scriptures RAKIM 18th Letter=GOD
Don't do this. Lyrically, Follow The Leader is one of the hottest joints ever!!! I mean ever!!! To compare that joint to anything out then and now is silly. KRS is Hip Hop though. Back in the day, and today. If you're sleeping then check out Gimme Da Gun or This Is What It Is for recent ish, or from back in the day, My Philosophy is a lyrical masterpiece. Longevity makes KRS the G.O.A.T. The God would have it if he stayed with Eric.
Rakim is a far better lyricist. The dude is flawless. actually, he has one flaw- he ain't a battler. And KRS? Is definatley a battler! If KRS gets him anywhere- it's gonna be onstage! Otherwise, rakim is holding this one down
WOW! ITS LIKE SUPERMAN VS THOR OR VS HULK. W/THIS, KRS1 IS THE BATTLE TESTED MC. TOO MUCH KNOWLEDGE AND CAN COME @U IN ANY DIRECTION. RAKIM MAY BE THE BETTER WRITE ON PAPER RAPPER. BUT KRS1 IS THE BETTER LETS BATTLE LIVE MC.
Its A Stalemate Lyrically, content, etc. If someone said Krs was better i would respect it. if someone said Rakim i would respect it. 1a vs 1b. lol..they came at the same time so you can't compare either one , there ain't no contrast to they true form..
rakim is a much better mc than krs 2 listen to the flow and lyrics krs 2 couldn't even come close back in the days and don't even talk about eric b as president OMG
Sound Of Da Police is the wrong song to rap battle to, now Criminal Mind with Scott LaRock is better, and would have killed Rakim. Props to Rakim, but overall KRS-One is The Shit, and had overall better rhymes, KRS-One is #1.
@nonofyall That's Bull, no one is a better MC than KRS-One, his rhymes and his styles are all around better than anyone that has ever challenged him. His style is so authentic, and is so original and his rhymes come together so clean, he is still fresh even today, KRS-One still #1.
@jusjoshqueersounds Your the one who define me as "one of those who thinks biggie is number one" You dont think thats funny? Your the one who critize my opinion about KRS. Dont you think that is funny? So dont cry when I do the same towards you. What goes around comes around.....
@jusjoshqueersounds Your the one who define me as "one of those who thinks biggie is number one" You dont think thats funny? Your the one who critize my opinion about KRS. Dont you think that is funny? So dont cry when I do the same towards you.
@jusjoshqueersounds When KRS steps on the stage its over. You are one of the people that is so caught up in dissing Hiphop and dont sit down and listen to the lyrics and flow. You probably put out a comment somewhere on youtube that Public Enemy cannot rhyme either. You are a sucka......
@jusjoshqueersounds Man, man. man. What you think? I told you KRS and RAKIM is hiphop. People that say:" KRS AND RAKIM ARE HIPHOP LEGENDS!" , ARE IN YOUR OPINION THE SAME PEOPLE that say: "biggie is best ever to live??? What drugs you on, cause you saying things that dont make any sense kid....
Battle why try? KRSONE will crush anybody. He has got ammo to blast for hours and hours nonstop. He will be here for ever. Cant say that about Rakim: "Its been a long time, I shouldnot left you". Well he did that again.....to bad leaving us without a fresh beat to step to.....
besides everything else, this is not a freestyle format...someone just picked the lyrics from a song they liked the best from each artist...this ain't a battle
these cats r innovaters in their own right...they should not be compared to the other...4 real, these dudes are icons in rap history...really? there is no comparision cuz they both do the dang thang on the mic
Rakim wins over Krs both were greati think rakims style tho alot of rappers wanted to follow and even nowa days rakim still makes good music krs right now witht he recent things he dropped is kinda ehh... but yeh rakim is 2 dope
Both have amazing word play, listen to 1,2 Pass It by D&D listen to KRS-Ones verse, and then go and listen Eric B & Rakim - Eric B is President. Listen to the lyrics, and compare them. To me, KRS and Rakim are the best lyricists. I grew up listening both, and if you are true hip hop fan you have mad respect for both.
In Hip Hop there is no best, there is a group of the best, but no one emcee is on top. Can there be a best rapper? no doubt. Whoever has the most plays is the best rapper (representative of corporate interest) but the best Emcee? no, can't happen. Because an emcee not only raps, but can save lives, inspire, educate, and enlighten. Not to mention styles, there are too many styles to designate one best emcee. This means an emcee is also responsible for his/her actions in life, not just in his bars
Rakim is The God of Rap however KRS-ONE is the God of War, A battle is in his advantage. Though I think Rakim is better overall lyrically, no one has ever beat KRS-1 and no one ever will. But don't forget Rakim destroyed Big Daddy Kane
@yultome Thats Like asking what taste's better on a Burger , the Mustard or Ketchup. they compliment each other i feel. as far as teaching , i think Krs one is a better teacher, at least he rapped more educated material. but as far as Lyrical Metaphors Rakim is the Best ever period. He was the most feared Rapper in the industry, I mean hardly Nobody and i repeat Nobody Came at Rakim. who ? Big Daddy Kane ? Its the Same with Krs 1 who really came at him ?
@t2SiiCk yeh they did homie it was on some underground shit I know people who saw it and said Big Daddy was on stage spit his piece and Rakim responded while sitting in his chair with a drink in one hand and mic in the other and destroyed him... also try googling it I saw rakim mention it briefly somewhere on youtube
@yultome i saw rakim interviews on big daddy he said there was enver beef and it was all love and kane hit him up sayin dont let ppl gas it so idk wat u talkin bout
@yultome Now imagine this KRS ONE VS NAS IN A FREESTYLE BATTLE that would tip over hip hop and turn rappers into mc's also the thing is nelly that fucking coward tried and got destroyed and jay z was murdered by nas in ether so it would return hip hop
@yultome Rakim never destroyed Kane. Kane's career went belly up when he implemented RnB and love songs into his focus. Ra and Kane would never go at each other, they're both from the same crew along with G Rap.
@Bombalino73 It wasnt a public battle I heard they were both in a club in 1991 and Kane was on stage and Ra was stting down holding a drink and mic and lit him up. I can't confirm nor prove this to you, but you do know they had a rivalry right? Theres an interview on youtube where Rakim even says it, he also edited Let the ryhthm hit em originally he dissed kane hard on it, Search for it! and Punisher is a sublimal shot to Kane, Aint no half stepping is sublimal sot to RA
@yultome Ayo with all due respect I'm 38, I was a freshman in high school 87, 88, when Ra and Kane came out. I don't have to look it up. On the radio and in the street they used to compare Rakim vs. Kane. I was just saying that Ra never destroyed Kane. There's a documentary called Unsung Big Daddy Kane that shows his life and career...unrelated to this discussion I found it and it tells the real story of Kane, not asking u to watch it..js.
@Bombalino73 I meant no disrespect man, sorry if I came off that way, I was just stating what I heard, with that said I envy you, your generation was the dopest being around when not just hip hop but music was real. Since I'm a fan of Kane I'll check that out anyway. Thank you
Rakim and KRS are my two favorite emcees, spell it right not a battle but a person playing records of his chioce, and KRS is on Rakim's level all day, do not sleep on Timothy Taylor from PRT either and GURU(R.I.P) and Melle Mel too..
niggaz please.... its about what people do with their vocabulary... Rakim at his height is not touched by KRS... follow the leader... thanx hiphop....
@bellefleurr follow the leader is nice as hell when it comes to flow but KRS is always speakin knowledge dope lyrics and he can flow there equal if not krs is better
i agree with u 99%......with 1% of me knowin that there are things both KRS-1 and Rakim could do to be better, but there has yet to be ANY emcee who maxed out in the creativity dept, and for that reason only, its easier to accept that they are indeed living legends who are as good as it gets, and most importantly they achieve the same goal of emcee excellence... differently
Hello! I am a upcomming horrorcore-rapper from sweden. If you like real lyrical smart shit check my shit out and rate and comment it! If you don't understand swedish there are songs in english to. I will upload new songs often!!! Also check my myspace-page out myspaceDOTcom/drlinusochdysfori ...Thanks in advance!
Yo Phils1fan23. Out of all the lyrical cutz to select from, why would you pick Sound of the Police to rep KRS in comparing lyrics with Rakim Follow the Leader? You got an ear for this or what? Do some more research son...Damn!!!
both are legends but comparing these two songs i'd give it to Rakim but if you compare "Follow The Leader" to "My Philosophy" that may be a tougher battle .but KRS is a battle rapper in the sense he had to battle for his so he may be more aggressive and win over the crowd more. but on the other hand with Rakim's clever words & metaphors he might say some crushing rhymes. both would definitely have to come out hard i know that.
The Greatest MC Of All Time Is KRS-ONE. Rakim is great too but he stayed away from the game too long but yet still i always since 86-87 liked Kris just a little bit more. But not to take nothing from the God. Rakim Is The Second Greatest MC Of All Time! Then you started the So called Hip-Hop Top 10 List. Real Talk. One of the most famous Hip-Hop question/comparison ever. Damn!
KRS one would murder Rakim. KRS is a battle rapper who has ended careers, Rakim has never battled anyone. KRS was more consistent for longer, had better albums, etc... Rakim is a overrated. KRS has a ton of songs with flows Rakim just can't match, he's too one dimensional. Examples: Feel the Vibe, Mad Crew, Build Ya Skills, MCs act like they don't know, Ova Here, the Bridge is Over, etc... KRS is built to destroy rappers, live, on wax, or wherever, fact. KRS wins easily.
@DownloadDoctor1 Word Is Bond, Rakim and KRS-One arent in the same category ya kno... but to me they are equal emcees in their own trades. KRS-One will indeed beat Rakim but he would be humble and say he lost because of Rakims steez in the rap game, you know KRS...
@DownloadDoctor1 Rakim isn't overrated your right that he's not a battle rapper but as a true MC Rakim revolutionized the way those cats back in the days wrote their lyrics and delivered their flow. Rakim introduced multisyllabic words to songs as well incorporating end/internal rhymes to lyric writing. He also changed the way cats flow by using his smooth jazzy baritone delivery. Rakim is the perfect MC and KRS-One is the perfect battle rapper. Both these cats are legends and true Hip-Hop
IMAGINE RAKIM, BIGGIE, LIL WAYNE JAY-Z STANDING IN FRONT OF HIM IN THAT SECOND VERSE "I GET WRECK" 2ND VERSE, CRUSHED THEM ALL AT ONCE THOSE DUDES IS GOOD BUT CHRIS IS THE TOP DOG OF RHYMING REMMBER 20 PLUS YEARS AND STILL DOING IT 1000'S OF RHYMES 15 ALBUMS, FREE STYLES KNOWN!!! FOR THEM. 9MM GOES BANG SET OFF THAT GANGSTER RAP BUT IT'S MORE TO THAT PEOPLE STUCK ON THAT YOU HAVE TO VERSATILE TALK ABOUT OTHER STUFF IN YOUR RHYMES HE'S THE BEST ARTIST HANDS DOWN THOSE OTHER DUDE HAS TO CATCH UP!
KRS-ONE BEST(GREATEST) RAPPER ALLTIMES MANY (DIFFERENT)STYLES ROCKING REGGAE / AMERICAN BEATS LYRICS ARE HARD, MEANINGFUL AND FLOWS ARE INCREDABLE 20 PLUS YEARS MOST CONSISTANCE MC HIS TEACHING JOINTS BE FLYER THAN MOST ARTIST PARTY JOINTS. FREE STYLE MASTER VERY FEW CAN MATCH HIS OFF THE TOP RAKIM CAN'T!!! KRS-ONE HAS A GREATER PURPOSE ON UPLIFTING OUR PEOPLE SHOWING IT'S MORE TO SEX,MONEY, DRUG RAP REPRESENTS THE ENTIRE HIP-HOP CULTURE. LISTEN TO "I GET WRECK" WITH TIM DOGG VERSE 1& 2
no, i am not crazy, and im definitely not saying his rhymes r meaningless...i just think that krs1's lyrics r more straight forward n hav more relativity to the lives of everyday ppl, while Rakims strength is fluency in flow. again im not tryna say Rakim's void n essence or that T-Cha's inept of performing, but GENERALLY SPEAKING, Rakim is master when it comes to fluency, &krs is master when it comes to being down to earth.
I think Rakim definitely is the best of the best. His lyrics are so deep and intellectual so complex to understand his flow is remarkable. You really have to concentrate to understand. he tells entire stories in his songs. HE IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A RAPPER. No wonder he is called the best MC of all time.
@kingdragon702: KRS-ONE is a phylosopher. He speaks about what needs to happen throughout the world. Also, he speaks on education in the classroom in most of his music. Rakim is a phylosopher of the streets. He speaks about what happens on the streets and what needs to happen to fix it by using himself as an example. They balance each other out.
Rakim, Biggie, Cool G Rap, Getto Boyz, KRS The Wu, Pun, Eric Sermon, Jeru The Damaja, Chubb Rock, Ice Cube, Guru, L.L., and I ain't even hittin' underground like Dead Prez.
Too much quality Hip-hop history out there... and then some punk-kid's gonna try to bring up Em' because they think he's hard because he talks about killing his parents, get that hillbilly garbage outta here.
@wa6515 are you crazy no rapper has more meaning in his songs than rakim. Just listen to 18th letter and Who is God. He tells entire stories in while rhyming.
@dunde98 ...not to mention, krs1's equally as competent in tellin stories. Listen to 9mm Goes Bang, Illegal Business, Bo! Bo! Bo!, Loves gonna Getcha, 100 Guns, 13 and Good. not only does he tell entire stories, hes analytical bout m. & his lyrics n general r more reflective than observational, n he gets to the pt. again, im not@all tryna discredit Rakim, but you kno what im sayin...plus if theres some1 here whos crazy its probly you cuz you jus dont kno how to talk to ppl you havnt even met.

jayd4ever 7 months ago

Nobody can beat KRS ONE in battle

Hey can someone give me some of Rakims best songs? I mean i would choose Nas over Rakim any day. But that's just my biased opinion. I only heard one song from Rakim and didn't like it at all. Any reccomendations?
womensrightslolz1 8 months ago
they both have too much respect for each other to battle.
TheFakeAssGangsta1 8 months ago
@TheRoddiggy in most other situations i would agree with you. however, this is hip hop and is a competitive movement. no other music genre has battles and just talks about themselves trying to be the greatest. hell, hip hop grew on battling. so, for me, ranking it is ;P
MrCommenterguy 8 months ago 6
No human being is better than another. This is why I don't like to rank anymore. This is just a "friendly" competition. No one wins.

The "R" is like the George Wahington of Mount Rushmore in the Hip-Hop game - but beside him resides the visage of KRS and Justin Bieber. kidding.

Otherwise, rakim is holding this one down
MrCommenterguy 10 months ago

Sound Of Da Police is the wrong song to rap battle to, now Criminal Mind with Scott LaRock is better, and would have killed Rakim. Props to Rakim, but overall KRS-One is The Shit, and had overall better rhymes, KRS-One is #1.

Rakim is by far a better MC than KRS.
nonofyall 11 months ago
@nonofyall That's Bull, no one is a better MC than KRS-One, his rhymes and his styles are all around better than anyone that has ever challenged him. His style is so authentic, and is so original and his rhymes come together so clean, he is still fresh even today, KRS-One still #1.

Its the Same with Krs 1 who really came at him ?

daboss88100 9 months ago 2
@yultome Now imagine this KRS ONE VS NAS IN A FREESTYLE BATTLE that would tip over hip hop and turn rappers into mc's also the thing is nelly that fucking coward tried and got destroyed and jay z was murdered by nas in ether so it would return hip hop
maxassasin911 8 months ago
@yultome RAKIM destroyed Big Daddy Kane but, he is ILL too...
thuglife85137 8 months ago
@yultome Rakim never destroyed Kane. Kane's career went belly up when he implemented RnB and love songs into his focus. Ra and Kane would never go at each other, they're both from the same crew along with G Rap.
Bombalino73 6 months ago
@Bombalino73 It wasnt a public battle I heard they were both in a club in 1991 and Kane was on stage and Ra was stting down holding a drink and mic and lit him up. I can't confirm nor prove this to you, but you do know they had a rivalry right? Theres an interview on youtube where Rakim even says it, he also edited Let the ryhthm hit em originally he dissed kane hard on it, Search for it! and Punisher is a sublimal shot to Kane, Aint no half stepping is sublimal sot to RA
yultome 6 months ago
@yultome Ayo with all due respect I'm 38, I was a freshman in high school 87, 88, when Ra and Kane came out. I don't have to look it up. On the radio and in the street they used to compare Rakim vs. Kane. I was just saying that Ra never destroyed Kane. There's a documentary called Unsung Big Daddy Kane that shows his life and career...unrelated to this discussion I found it and it tells the real story of Kane, not asking u to watch it..js.

KRS-One and Rakim are living legends, there's no reason to even ask who is better! They are both as good at it gets, and they do it differently!
shsfootball54 1 year ago
@shsfootball54
i agree with u 99%......with 1% of me knowin that there are things both KRS-1 and Rakim could do to be better, but there has yet to be ANY emcee who maxed out in the creativity dept, and for that reason only, its easier to accept that they are indeed living legends who are as good as it gets, and most importantly they achieve the same goal of emcee excellence... differently

PsychItsMike 1 year ago
both are legends but comparing these two songs i'd give it to Rakim but if you compare "Follow The Leader" to "My Philosophy" that may be a tougher battle .but KRS is a battle rapper in the sense he had to battle for his so he may be more aggressive and win over the crowd more. but on the other hand with Rakim's clever words & metaphors he might say some crushing rhymes. both would definitely have to come out hard i know that.

Real Talk.

Both these cats are legends and true Hip-Hop

no, i am not crazy, and im definitely not saying his rhymes r meaningless...i just think that krs1's lyrics r more straight forward n hav more relativity to the lives of everyday ppl, while Rakims strength is fluency in flow. again im not tryna say Rakim's void n essence or that T-Cha's inept of performing, but GENERALLY SPEAKING, Rakim is master when it comes to fluency, &krs is master when it comes to being down to earth.
wa6515 1 year ago
