Not using the rotating gate enables me to get the second star coin much faster, if I did use the gate I will be behind the fence, preventing me to pick up that coin.

How do you get three stars at the screen where you select your file? I have gotten and spent all of the star coins, but I only have 2 stars

Go to world 1-Blue Mushroom House and pay 80 Star Coins.

After you paided them you will see text at the left bottom corner: All Spent.

Save the game.
