Factually incorrect, yet Film well constructed and many beautiful Shots. The ending with the Vomit could be omitted, for frankly it tarnishes your Effourts. Lupe Valéz was quite aktiv in the Talkies, and she was beutiful with singing as well as dancing.
This is a sad and moving tale, beautifully shot although not quite factual. Lupe Velez was still successful at the time of her death. She killed herself because she was depressed, because her lover had abandoned her and she was pregnant. The actress who plays Lupe Velez is good.
I am quite agree that hree are some inconcistences in the real facts but in my opinion I think that this is an enancement of the figure and life of Lupe Velez (cousing of Dolores del Rio by the way) and it is nice done and for me it make me feel more courious about culture in Mexico and cinema at the bigining of the last century.
This is the second time I have watched this piece, and I don't care if it is historically incorrect in some areas of the short film, but I really enjoyed it. Thankyou very much for going through all the effort of planning a short piece like this about a great Mexican Actress whom is all but mostly forgotten today.
Beautifully shot...terribly written. Anyone who knows anything about Lupe Velez knows that her life was far more tragic than, "oh, I can't get a job anymore." Good choice on the Muse track, too. Somber.
you made ur point a while ago, please let people make there own comment on this piece, i thought the editing and piece was done very well. I dont know too much on Lupe but this was done very well from an editors point of view.
Sorry to say so but all this is nonsense. Lupe Velez was not a silent star who was not able to find work after the talkies came in. Lupe made only 5 silents... and 39 talkies !! so this is ridiculous. And she never suicided because of her career but because of a wrong love affair. She was pregnant and refused to have an abortion and could not stand to have a baby alone and cope with gossips at that time.
@tousamis You're right tousamis. She was a beautiful and talented lady, but her life came to a tragic end because of a failed love affair. Becoming pregnant out of wedlock in the mid 1940s would have been hard to cope with, especially for a celebrity. I guess she just didn't want to face that alone. To bad she chose suicide. The world lost a wonderful, beautiful person, and a great actress. Hey everyone! Read the real story of her life..
I read somewhere she enjoyed watching boxing matches so much so that she would scream " give it to him Bret!" it is reported that once when bret (a boxer) finally killed the other guy in the ring, she went up to hi , lowered her gown and kissed him.
Your rendition was awesome. Although yes some of it is pure depiction. But I loved it none the less. I have an autograph of Lupita and I cheerish it so much .
Lupe Vélez made over 30 films in the post-silent era. She did not die with her head in the toilet. You've made a slick little film but you're perpetuating an ugly, vicious, racist lie. It's just bad form. Lupe was found in her bed. The toilet story was a rumor that circulated... very much like rumors had circulated during her life. If you want to exercise poetic license, make up stories that don't slander people.
Strangely enough, despite the inaccuracies, this is very nicely filmed, and the actress you've used looks lovely.....
Lupe didn't really die with her head down the toilet....the official crime scene report confirms this. I think it was Kenneth Anger who perpetrated that rumour in Hollywood Babylon......
I am all for poetic license but this is kind of disrespectful to an actress who managed to break racial lines. She was one of the first latina actress to do feature films, not that she gets many kudos for that.
I'm not saying this is what happened, I'm not saying it's a documentary. She also wasn't 19 years old, anglo-saxon and in yorkshire! it's just a bit of entertainment, jesus, where's you people's sense of fun?
Hi. I am the great nephew of Lupe Velez. That means she is the sister of my grandfather. If anybody wants to know more about her email me at jacobslatter320 especially the people who think they know her. Stop please. You dont know what your talking about.
I thought it was a very lovely piece film. You are capturing the "myth" of Lupe Velez not the actual events...and that is an entirely legitimate artistic goal. Todd Haynes' "Velvet Goldmine" and "I'm Not Here" do the same thing and they are excellent films. The myth in Hollywood is always more powerful and enduring than the truth!
Nice use of music but pretty inaccurate - Lupe Velez only starred in 3 feature-length fully-silent films ('The Gaucho', 'Stand And Deliver' and 'Where East Is East') and her suicide was for personal reasons, not career ones (she didn't want to give birth to an illegitimate child).
Oh man it was going so nicely until that vomit scene AUGH!!!

I remember some quite successful talking movies starring Ms. Velez. She was awesome, and as a kid at the time, I adored her.

Your very wrong about the talkies bringing
about the end of her career, Quiet the contrary, she excelled after the silent movie era.

i heard that lupe slipped on her vomit and hit her head on the toilet bowl. and that's how she died.

I have to add: Haven't you seen the Warhol film? You're going to have to get more poetic than this. Or impress with the range of your license.

So how did Lupe Vélez died?

Yeah, blame Kenneth Anger. The Frasier show helped give that myth new life.
