Talent can only take you so far, it took Riddick to the championship. His lack of discipline is what separated him from the likes of Lewis, Holyfield and Tyson. Talent wise he was up there with all of them, but he was far too incosistent to be ranked ahead of anyone of them.

I think Bowe was one of the most talented heavyweights of all time. He's on My Top 25 HW list! Man the early/mid 90's was a great time for HWs... Bowe, Holyfield, Tyson, Moorer, Foreman. I would mention Lewis, but he wasn't elite until the late nineties when all of these other guys were past their prime. It's a shame what the HW division has become. They should make a Super HW division (anything above 235 lbs) So we can see action packed skilled heavyweights that don't look so sloppy!

It´s not too often you watch a boxing clip and you agree with the uploader, but I actually agree this time. Riddick Bowe could very well be the best heavyweight of the 90´s. No one could argue that Holyfield wasn´t in his prime by the time they had their trilogy, he defeated some of the fighters that made Mike Tyson rise quickly and undeniable he had raw talent and of the greatest trainer legends ever in Eddie Futch.

He was a pretty active fighter. I haven't seen a lot of his fights except for the famous ones. The looping overhand right seems to be his signature punch. This video says it's very effective in knocking people out. George Foreman said Bowe didn't have a straight right and could have beaten Galota if he had one. I wonder if that's true.

@lennylovesit It was indeed a promoters clash and even more so a sanctioning body clash. The fiasco of Bowe throwing the belt in the trash was orchestrated by his manager Rock Newman as to disregard the WBC as a sanctioning body. Bowe's camp thought they were not getting a fair shake from the WBC therefore did not want part of their belt. But the Bowe naysayers will always see it as his refusal or "fear" to fight Lennox Lewis.

Riddick Bowe in interview's now says that Lennox Lewis's camp wanted more money that was standard for a challenger and if Bowe's camp refused they could wind down the clock and get the belt anyway and then get championship purses in future. I guess they had to put a spin on it so he didn't appear to be a paper champ.

Most of the times it´s probably the different organizations WBC, WBA and IBF that does most of the ducking and the trainers and the teams around the fighters that make more money on traing a champion. Most fighters want to fight the best. Their are similar stories with Calzaghe, Mayweather, Ottke, just to mention a few.

It´s not too often you watch a boxing clip and you agree with the uploader, but I actually agree this time. Riddick Bowe could very well be the best heavyweight of the 90´s. No one could argue that Holyfield wasn´t in his prime by the time they had their trilogy, he defeated some of the fighters that made Mike Tyson rise quickly and undeniable he had raw talent and of the greatest trainer legends ever in Eddie Futch.

Like I said, he ducked Lewis and retired at 29 in what should have been his prime when Lewis started his Heavyweight reign. He wouldn't fight Tyson because they were friends. What was Bowe and his corner thinking when they offered a 90 - 10 split to Lewis? It is almost clear that he didn't want to fight him in the first place. And the fact that he pulled off that 'dump the belt in the trash can' stunt further tarnished his reputation indefinitely. He was hoping that he would made Lewis look bad with it... Bowe could have been an all time great along with guys like Foreman, Ali or Louis but he wasted it all. A fight with Lewis would have been amazing, unquestionably..

He was a pretty active fighter. I haven't seen a lot of his fights except for the famous ones. The looping overhand right seems to be his signature punch. This video says it's very effective in knocking people out. George Foreman said Bowe didn't have a straight right and could have beaten Galota if he had one. I wonder if that's true.

@lennylovesit It was indeed a promoters clash and even more so a sanctioning body clash. The fiasco of Bowe throwing the belt in the trash was orchestrated by his manager Rock Newman as to disregard the WBC as a sanctioning body. Bowe's camp thought they were not getting a fair shake from the WBC therefore did not want part of their belt. But the Bowe naysayers will always see it as his refusal or "fear" to fight Lennox Lewis.

Riddick Bowe in interview's now says that Lennox Lewis's camp wanted more money that was standard for a challenger and if Bowe's camp refused they could wind down the clock and get the belt anyway and then get championship purses in future. I guess they had to put a spin on it so he didn't appear to be a paper champ.

It's fairly obvious that managers do the managing of fighters and dollars and cents are what matter not petty name calling. I think Bowe favoured his overhand right too much though and he took a lot of punches he didn't really need too and Big George was right when he said he needed a straight right but Bowe was a very talented, entertaining guy win or lose.

@noirnoticvibe yes, I saw the amateur fight between them , it certainly wasn't a brutal ko. as the british press made it out, and would not have detterred Bowe from fighting Lewis as a pro. but because of how the WBC championship fight didn't go ahead, the brit press milked it up, to make it look like Bowe was running from Lewis at that time
A shame as I think a fight between the two at the height of their powers would have been an exciting prospect, but we'll never know.

@lennylovesit On regarding the ducking of Lennox Lewis it´s sounds about the same from the other side of the atlantic ocean, but that that Lewis was the one doing the ducking. Most of the times it´s probably the different organizations WBC, WBA and IBF that does most of the ducking and the trainers and the teams around the fighters that make more money on traing a champion. Most fighters want to fight the best. Their are similar stories with Calzaghe, Mayweather, Ottke, just to mention a few.
