  • Padraic My Prince, Conor My King

  • creepy... my name is Padraic

  • I can't even comprehend the fact that I'd never heard this.. this is just. i don't know. too incredible in the most miserable of ways.

  • this is too world-weary for an 18 year old to write, it blows my mind that he could produce something like this at that age. just such a fantastic song.

  • this song keeps me alive.... when im at my worst i only listen to this song

  • Oberst is the greatest song writer of all time, bar none. If you listen to all his work over the years, it's just obvious.

Even if you don't like his style of music, you cannot ignore the beauty in his work.

  • @eocine What about bob dylan? ... I mean... Have you ever listened to 'tombstone blues'?! Conor is also one of my fav but his lyrics are darker

  • @WhoKilledMickeyMouse if you truly feel Conor's lyrics they can't even be compared to Dylan's.

  • @migled9 I can listen to dylans lyrics when im stonned and/or drunk... bright eyes I can only do under the influence of alcohol

  • @WhoKilledMickeyMouse you can only feel their music when you're drunk or stoned?

    oh. hm. that's sad.

  • @migled9 No what I meant was hat weed makes you happy and alcohol makes you happy in a sad way, Dylan's music makes me happy and Conors' makes me sad

  • @WhoKilledMickeyMouse how about 'first day of my life' ? ... I think there's a lot of Bright Eyes songs that can make you happy. at least they can make me happy.

  • @migled9 You do realize that Conor Oberst was greatly inspired by Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, so I'm pretty sure being compared to his inspiration would probably be a pretty high compliment to him. There is a large amount of people with a fan boy attitude like you, sadly these people are what are expected, and also the antithesis to everything he writes.

  • @lancekessler55 I recall him saying that 'there's worse things to be called, I guess' when someone compared him to Bob Dylan. also he rather seemed to like Cohen and R.E.M. over the ones you named.

I also don't belive that you know me or are able to judge me on the basis of a youtubecomment. also beeing as rude and offensive as you are, is more of a anthithesis to his lyrics than me saying that I like him better than Dylan.

  • @migled9 Maybe if you'd pay attention to the interview further you'd pick up on the Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie inspiration question in which he responded to with a "yes, definitely." I guess this entry taken from his livejournal doesn't mean anything either. so many unwashed masses of rednecks who i must save from their corporate masters! i am but a simple messenger, common folk, blue collared and red eyed and white from lack of sunlight. i AM america. woody guthrie is in my soul...

  • I think he has a beautiful voice, I could listen to him all day.

  • This song reminds my of my my brothers little girls that past away when she was only 2 months old

  • I saw him livee! <3

  • How the FUCK did an 18 year old kid write this?

  • this is not biographical you fucking idiots. he's said so in interviews. and no, his mom didn't drown one kid for 5 consecutive years, that was a joke from the fake interview they did that came after attempt to tip the scales. stop being so damn stupid.

  • @malcreativity (Hope you're trolling)

  • @abigailballantyne listen to fevers and mirrors and you'll get the joke silly goose.

  • @malcreativity No, that didn't happen.

  • @malcreativity are you being serious? :O

  • The way he sang "absorrrrrrrrrrrrbed".

    That was orgasmic.

  • this is actually biographical :(

  • I had a brother once...

  • he's so amazing, and hot. (; <3

  • Babies turn blue when they are ignored, like a sky on summer days...absolutely lovely.

    <3

  • without any words

  • thank god his mother didnt do this to him! im sure id be dead with out his music.

  • now, let me tell you all something;

mr. oberst sat with a plagiary poet and talked of nonsense until dawn,

and he told this poet how he dreamt up this song; (:

--> cartoon blues, look it up.

  • It is said that he doesn't actually have a brother that died. It was read in an article that he believes in the seperation of art. Make sense?

  • 2 people were not drunk in a phone booth.

  • Also notable: the song was released in 1998 and the song mentions a 6 year anniversary. 1998 minus 6 would be 1992, the 20 year anniversary of Bloody Sunday. Bright Eyes also covered "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2.

Bloody Sunday was a day in 1972 when British Soldiers openly fired upon peaceful Irish protestors. 13 were killed.

  • The mother figure was very important in Irish literature. Mothers were always being portrayed as very nurturing and protective. Every mother was a good mother; she was representative of Ireland as a whole. Padraic mean "Noble" or "Patriarch" in Irish. See Martin McDonagh's "Padraic" in "The Lieutenant of Inishmore." He is a character hell bent on irish revolution and has actually rebelled from his rebel group. What tragic historical event this alludes to, I am unsure of.

  • @bwoob200 it might be notable that bright eyes also covered "Sunday Bloody Sunday" a song by U2, about well... Bloody Sunday.

A day when peaceful Irish protestors were openly fired on by the British Army.

  • i had a brother once,

    drowned in a bathtub,

    before hed ever learnt,

    how to talk,

    n i dont know,

    what his name was,

    but my mother does.

  • I just uploaded a remix I did of this song 4 years ago with Sony Sound Forge 8. It's here: /watch?v=ZUYxI16xNJs OR u can also search "Padraic My Prince (remix 3)." Please rate and let me know what you think!

  • I wanna cry. No im not sad, but music can always change emotion.. and This song pours my emotion's on a table and builds back up leaving pieces missing. Soo much emotion in one song, Soo much emotion given to one person.

  • @SummertimeHigh...yeah.

  • @heyjude97 interview is said to be fake

  • @missclaritystar i thought it was a fake, since it was so funny, but it's still kind of funny to believe. (idk)

  • @missclaritystar interview isn't said to be fake, it is fake.

he did it to show that he didn't care what the critics were saying about his albums (that they were too sloppy and low-fi) - which you and I probably already know that he was going for that sound

  • @heyjude97 Are youbeing serious or joking? Not about the interview. I heard it too

  • we are soulmates my friend

  • Comment removed

  • how sad he is, i know that gives life to this incredible beauty, but it always reminds me of that one modest mouse lyric "If life's not beautiful without the pain. Well, I'd just rather never ever even see beauty again"

well im glad he can carry it.

  • Conor Oberst is amazing...there is no one that can fuck with my emotions the way he can, no previous girlfriend, no reletive...no one, and whats more is I would be angry at anybody else for doing so, but that's the whole reason I love him

  • This is so beautiful and so eerie.

  • I saw the future once. I was drunk in a phone booth. My eyes were wept and read. And I could not tell what was said.. These lyrics are great!

  • @evandb42 It's "wet and red," but I agree ;)

  • I saw the future once. I was drunk in a phone booth

  • just to put this out there: this is a really low, low quality version of the song.

  • This song will haunt my soul beyond the day of my death.

    Maybe,

  • Amazing, as always. c:

  • this sounds like ugly tits.

  • @politicalanomaly Ugly tits do not make sounds. Your beliefs are flawed.

  • @Elkotend oh but they do! it is your beliefs that are flawed!

  • @politicalanomaly No, they don't. And even if they did, I'm sure they wouldn't make such harmony as this.

  • @Elkotend this is the harmony ugly tits make.

  • I had a dream about a week ago where someone was repeating part of the lyrics in this song to me. I don't know where they started but I remember them saying "Where the selfishly sick and self absorbed are welcome". There was no music playing in my room, and I haven't listened to this song in MONTHS. I just thought it was pretty cool. haha

  • this song sucks penis

  • @theclockmace dude your dad/mom sucks penis, and you are the biggest penis ever, so shut the fuck up, and kill yorself

  • @blackscarlet512 oh geese another emo kid. Go cut yourself and cry in corner, You Fucking Fagot. And i am the biggest Penis.

  • This is the only song ever to give me goosebumps.

  • just when you thought his singing was out of tune, it goes flat then sharp then hits it perfectly as if he was kinda messin with it. either that or he's too bad a singer to hit the note properly, or he's trying to fit some kind of niche of being a super-sad and sobbing mofo, crying while singing. Any way, i liked it.

  • @krazyamz9095 That's actually one of the many things that I love about Bright Eyes, and Conor's voice, is that it's real. It's not perfect, and he leaves it that way. They don't edit out any notes he doesn't hit. It's like he's singing to himself with no one around.

  • i like the lyrics but his voice is so special!

  • AOH CONOR WE LOVE YOU SENSITIVE HEART THROB AND YOU OF ALL SPECIAL PEOPLE SHOULD GROW YOUR HAIR OUT BECAUSE IT IS STRAIGHT. I mean come ON you blithering anus mongrels how is THAT not one fucking heck of a straight line? I hate your blithering most anus fans for growing your hair out before mine or whatever, I saw the future once. But I've got your back but anus ass. So flag, report, spam. IT HAS CHANGED YOU.

  • . . . *lost for words*

  • He didn't actually have a brother in case anyone was wondering. It is a fictional song.

  • I can't understand the massive and incredibly dark metaphors Conor uses in the song, but even so this song gives me the same feeling I receive when I think about how large of a universe we live in and how I'm on person on one planet in a whole collection of a plethora of galaxies.

  • This song means so much to me. :(

  • and also if you listen to an attempt to tip the scales on his album Fevers and Mirrors near the end he talks about how he had a brother name Padraic that drowned in a bathtub, but he says that his mom had a kid every year for like 6 years and she drowned a baby every year. Obviously it only happened once but since he makes later reference to it maybe its true

  • @bradenls0 5 years* but who gives a fuck right

  • really sad, it actually happened too

  • @bradenls0 No it didn't.

  • @bradenls0 No it didn't? Ahaha if you listen to the interview after the song it's very clear it's complete fiction.

  • rainy day music

    =]

  • Its Sad To Say That This Song Reminds Me Of My Brother Dying..

  • yeah i think arienette and maybe some of the other ppl he wrote songs about where used like how he decribed in that cd fevers and mirrors "he needed to free him self up to use alagory or whatever but the idea or dream he is expressing is real in a way ...man iv heard that cd a few to many times P

  • A great song, but does anybody else think that it sounds a lot like "Down in a Rabbit Hole" for Digital Ash in a Digital Urn? They sound like an electronica version and demo of the same song w/ different lyrics.

  • The song is about a made up person. He's a story teller and a very good. All the songs about arienette in fevers and mirrors, she an entirely made up person.

  • Why were you spammed?

  • saddest song ever....it reminds me of my brother......

  • @MCRxSimsXAnime did he drown in a bathtub

  • @jacobryanball10 no but he died when i was 6 and he was only 2 months old...and he had a pulmonary heart defect and his veins were too small.

  • I love this song. More then life. <3

  • more THAN life

  • Alright, mate :)

  • ppl are def. selfishley sic'!

  • @aguynamedchad

    loley

  • great song. lyrics remind me of kimya dawson's my mom. powerful and disturbing

  • I love the reference to this song in "an attempt to tip the scales":

"well, I did have a brother who died in a bathtub... drowned... actually I had five brothers that died that way... no, I'm serious... my mother drowned one every year for five consecutive years. They were all named Padraic..."

    Oh Conor...

  • that's a joke

  • Conor is incredible. i love what he says about arienette in that song.

  • omg are u seriousley? :'(((

  • @osiris0413

    That isn't real.

That's from a faux, staged interview...

  • Is this song not just the most tragic and beautiful piece of music you've ever heard?

  • My first fav Bright Eyes song

  • this song has some really disturbing lyrics, one of the darkest songs I've ever heard

  • conor is sso hot

  • Id do him.

    Im a guy

    and totally strait

  • I often find myself saying the same thing. LOL

  • @skippyasqueeze no one is perfectly straight.

it's pretty obvious that you're not.

  • @skippyasqueeze

    well not TOTALLY ;P

  • @skippyasqueeze Obviously not

  • @skippyasqueeze Same dude. He's my fucking Idol.

  • Comment removed

  • @skippyasqueeze who can't spell for shit. lol.

  • @skippyasqueeze Straight**

  • @skippyasqueeze Did you know there's a name for that? I've seen more than one guy call themselves a ''hetero-Conorist''

  • poetry is not to be understood, it is to be awed. poetry is a sculpture of words. marvel at the beauty of how the phrases are strung together, how it sounds. don't get stuck on what it necessarily means. it is a form of expression. read, and find the beauty, not the meaning.

  • To say that a work of art is good, but incomprehensible to the majority of men, is the same as saying of some kind of food that it is very good but that most people can't eat it.

    Leo Tolstoy

  • not incomprehensible. don't use big words you don't understand. i'm only saying to appreciate the brilliance of the song and lyrics, not the underlying meaning.

  • not trying to find the underlying meaning seems like you're appreciating it about half as much as you could and should

  • Poetry is to be lifted off the page adn pasted onto your soul, so as to leave an impression of it upon yourself.

  • very poetic, and fitting. i agree. but i also believe that poetry as well as all works of writing shouldn't be analyzed so closely. and rereading the comments before, i don't think you can compare poetry to food. or painted art. it is a form in itself.

  • Beautiful words. It discribes it perfectly.

  • @phenethylaminedreams he really does write poetry, more than lyrics...

  • omg i'm crying

  • Conor said in an interview (that wasn't dubbed with his voice) that one of his close friends had a baby brother who drowned, and that's why he wrote the song.

  • really? could you please send me a link, cause I havent read that one

    thanks

  • this is pure sadness at its best

    amazing lyrics & so true

  • This is a work of fiction.

Connor never had any brothers who died.

He didn't do this to trick anyone or to make people feel sorry for him.

Even when the song is mentioned in the interview in the song An Attempt to Tip The Scales it's not true. (Thats a fake interview and it's not even Connor talking.)

In my opinion Connor wrote this probably to describe a loss of innocence or a time when he felt like a part of him died.

  • He's extremely remarkable and poetic so I've learned not to take a lot of the subjects he sings about too literally.

  • i always like to think the first lines "i had a brother once he drowned in a bathtub" talk about his early religious upcoming. you know the whole christian thing. like the baby drowning simply meaning the baby being baptized. idk what the hell the rest is about.. lol. probably just a bad experience.

  • i love this band, they have such creativity! (he never had a brother)

  • Conor had I think 5 brothers all named Conor. They all died and one of them drowned in a bathtub when he was 2.

  • He has no dead brother. Padriac is imaginary. I've lost a brother and this song explains my pain perfectly!

  • I hope that "red" in the line "My eyes were wet and red but I could not tell what was said" can also be heard to mean "read." As in, I hope Conor Oberst meant for it to have a double meaning.

  • i think i've listened to this song so many times that i count for like half of the views alone haha

  • ive heard the fake interview and this song, the interview doesn't make it less sad.

  • the interview at the end of an attempt isn't even conor. it's the singer of the faint making fun of conor.

  • LOL not even

  • not even what?

  • this song is sad...just about to listen to that An Attempt To Tip The Scales maybe i can laugh lol, i am in highschool right now and i try to get my friends to listen but they look at me weird, they dont know good music stupid people who listen to lady gaga and stuff grr

  • lady gaga xD

    yes she sux bad -__-

  • same thing happens with me and my friends, connor writes those most amazing lyrics though

  • yeah and so does conor

jk i knoe what you ment

  • i dont like Lady Gaga lol i hate her

  • there is diff music for diff moods and taste. I dont listen to her much, but when Im in the mood, I actually enjoy listening to it. :p

  • Same here.

It's such a shame that actual good music is rarely appreciated.

..but, again, it wouldn't be the same if everyone was listening to Conor. I don't know if I'm making any sense, but I get this feeling of extreme joy when I know that I am doing something that the typical human being isn't.

  • yeah i know what u mean like its good that not a lot of people know about Bright Eyes lol that was like me with Kings Of Leon not a lot of people heard about them then they released Sex On Fire and the ppl who hated them are saying KOL are their fave bands lol

  • Same here.

I think,.if everyone listened to conor, despite the fact I love his music,I would be listening to something entirely different.

  • that's because as humans we strive to be unique. realistically, your taste shouldn't depend on whether or not anyone or everyone likes the same band as you.

  • ... or maybe it's because when the majority agrees on something, it's usually worthless or wrong.

  • I'm sorry but that doesn't make much sense.

  • "Whenever people agree with me I always feel I must be wrong." - At least Oscar Wilde felt the same as I do.

  • What is 1+1? :P

  • HAHA. you have to listen to this song and then listen to the interview and the end of An Attempt to Tip the Scales. :)

    ...Ahaha. <3

  • i listen to this song way too much.

  • but why?

  • slightly harsh? well if we see that on the news we know who to blame :P

  • So people think a little baby dieing before it can talk is sad

    But abortion is being promoted

    >.>

  • Really? You're going to bring your polemical views into this? The issue of abortion is slightly more complex.

  • this song is so sad but at the same time awesome

  • hah its a name ptshh

  • what does padraic mean?

    hahahahaa

  • the video is breahtakingly simple yet beautiful. great work! i loved it.

  • This song makes me crack up. I used to think it was sad, then I listened to the interview at the end of "An Attempt To Tip The Scales". Now I can't listen to this without laughing.

  • omg ikr. At first it's the most heartbreaking song ever. A baby who drowns, his mom is heartbroken and his brother is going to kill himself. But then we listen to the fake interview after Attempt to tip the scales, and the whole 6 brothers named Padraic thing. It's hilarious.

  • @xXCobraliciousXx - Dude, I'm totally with you. This is a trip down memory lane for me but ever since I heard that track its hard to get as involved in this song. Doesn't he say he had seven brothers named Padraic and they all drowned, one per year?

  • @xXCobraliciousXx it's based on something that actually happened. i think conor oberst was just being dark as usual in that interview. but it actually did happen. i wonder if it's still so hilarious. lol.

  • im on the verge of crying this song is beautiful but so sad as sidewalkholdsdimonds said i could hold everything back till "padriac...." then i just started feeling so sad
