im sure he didnt suck this bad when he was playing zappa every day. his technique is probly rusty, he's playing shitty distortion through a single coil strat and singing badly to it. of course it sounds shitty.
you guys are useless .. he's playing a section of a song that's not even played on guitar .. the fact that he's playing such a complex rhythm and note patterns on guitar is just fucking cool .. and doesn't matter if it's sloppy.
If you imagine how incredibely hard those parts/licks are to play on guitar, and then singing at the same time, AND considering Frusciante is probabely stoned out of his mind in this video... This was actually really good! Nice little homage, and a tastefull little addition to add to the show. Quite awesome!
I am a huge peppers fan and have spent many a time bouncin' around in a pit in front of the band.I love John's playing. But to think he could have ever played in Zappa's band is to have absolutely no understanding of Zappa's music and its difficulty.John is not close to having the musical chops necessary to hang in Zappa's band.He chickened out because he didn't want to embarrass himself (like here). The idea that being in Zappa's band would be boring and he wouldn't get any pussy is such a joke.
Honestly.. I respect zappas philosophy and alot of the things hes said.. things he fought for.. and trying to discover new things.. but his music.. if compared to frusciante's.. sucks.. niandra lades is just as raw if not way more than anything zappa has done.. and much better in feeling, melody.. songwriting.. everything.. just my oppinion though I respect your zappa worship I guess
he went to a zappa audition but as someone above has said frank was anti drugs and john wanted to be a rockstar so he never performed at the audition with frank i think he probably could have got in he has a vast musical knowledge even back then...........i'm a huge zappa fan so this isn't a dig or anything
comparing apples and oranges. John writes perfect little songs with perfect lyrics. Frank's music was wide open and amazing, but his lyrics were something way below sophmoric.
Hmmmm... i find franks lyrics way not sophomoric, cheesy sometimes yes but its kinda like saying Picasso was a bad painter, and Schoenberg was just messingly playing the chromatic scale
He could have "joined" Zappa's band???? Not likely without an invite to audition - which never would have happened. So, the answer is "no, he could not."
It's hard to get the transcendent quality of the master. Zappa really uplifted along with the complexity. Nothing against John, who is another kind of artist in his own right.
Whoever said that he is an average guitarist is a fool. Just because he doesn't soullessly shred a million notes per minute, although he can (Lyon 6/6/06), doesn't mean he's less of a guitarist than that tool bag Steve Vai.

John is a great guitar player, he is very tasteful, not a virtuoso or a shredder. He is all over Jimi, even his tone is much like his. On the Guitar World magazine though, with John Mayer and Derek Trucks, I think John was the lesser of the two though.
Brotherstan28 , stop being lame and make a reasonable point. Smoke some grass eh ? Haha. Iv lived in the netherlands.... and likely have more experience in altered states of consciousness than you ever will, yet im not unreasonable in my points.... frusciante can not compare to Vai or Kenelly, to say otherwise simply means you dont play.
Stop being a child , study some music theory, pick up and instrument and watch your uneducated over estimations of average playing
Well he does tend to namedrop the whole "i was gonna audition for Frank Zappa" quite a bit..
He never would have made it though, he's good at what he does, but people only tend to look up to players like that when they have a very small knowledge of how the chords work together & only know the pentatonic scale..
To those guys it seems players like John have magical powers, LOL!
In fact i do have a lot of respect for John as a guitar player, i think he has wrote/co-wrote some pretty great songs & is very creatively minded when it comes to song writing which something a lot of technical players tend to be lacking..
But i just don't believe he is the right player for Zappas band, it's a whole other discipline to have to be able to play anything which Frank can dream up no matter how demanding, that is where you need a technician..

Yes he's good at what he does, but he cant do very much. Iv friends who are in their early 20's and are far better than him, and they wouldnt describe themselves as incredible.
Also there are kids on youtube who blow him away....you either dont play guitar or havent played very long. And there is no way he could have played in Zappa's band - he just isnt that good. Iv seen him play live twice also, i dont dislike the guy or his style, but there no point claiming he's something he's not.

to sound repetitive and a little dull on their own. Listen to guys like Vai , satriani, greg howe, frank gambale, shawn lane, al di meola, tommy emmanuel, django reinhardt, brett garsed, preston reed.... to name but a few.
Its no offense to john frusciante, like i said iv paid to see him live twice and i loved it, and i do like his style .... but he just isnt in the same league as the top guys who have dedicated themselves to mastering their instrument.
Thats right.... his material can be played by most average guitarists. Its pointless denying this, i bet even the man himself would admit this. And no i wont "shut the fuck up" to conform with your musical tastes, i dont really care about sad attempts at youtube abuse, i like music and my points are valid.
I hate getting ropped into petty youtube squabbles. Fact is he is a standard rock guitarist.... nothing wrong with that, but after a while the petatonic and blues scales begin to....
im with you on the arguing thing...and im not trying to make you conform with my tastes....course not....and yeh his shit can be covered...i can...but you simply can't say hes "average"....you just cant...but....i cant be fucked..and im sure you can't either....to pursue this pointless argument that will not better our lives at all...so yeh..i think hes really good...you think hes average....and theres nuthn wrong with that.... :)
hardly. you couldnt play his easiest material I bet and Id love to see you attempt something like inca roads...this is one of the easiest passages btw
Thats not a hard bet to win and im not very good. Yes i would love to attempt something like inca roads someday also - and i would really hope it sounded like Franks version....not like the above video. Whats your problem exactly, below this you said exactly what i was saying - he didnt have the chops for zappa's band.
This guy is one of the best musicians in the world. When he was 18 Frank Zappa (who was a huge influence on him) offered him to be in his band but he declined and joined the chilis.
I believe it went this way: Frank did an audition, john was in line and just when it was his turn he got scared and ran off. both great muscicians in any way!
Nah I heard he could've joined Zappa's band but john said (in an interview) that he realized that it was going to be boring and that wasn't what he wanted. As an 18 year old, he wanted to chase girls and have more fun so he joined the red hot chili peppers (who were one of his favorite bands before he joined them, when they had a small but loyal fan base.) John catapulted the chilis to global success and is now ranked by some as one of the greatest guitarists in the world.
john couldn't have gotten in zappa's band even if he tried over and over again, but that being said it is true he would get more ass in the red hot chilis
he got all his technical skills back with work, some years after his return...teenage john was more skilled than californication john, but i think him now is more skilled than teenage?
As much as I like RHCP, I hope they arent mocking the great FZ. Now all you closed minded RHCP fans, go ahead and thumbs this down, but musicians with a ear know this first hand...Johns style and tone reeks of Hendrix. As a matter of fact he BLATANTLY rips Hendrix of on the first bar of the solo of Dani California...its foxy lady. His playing here is sloppy and choppy. He wouldn't pass a FZ audition with that performance.
obviously john wouldn't be mocking one of his main inspirations, the Dani California solo sounds more likee the riff from purple haze not foxy lady so you should listen to that. the only reason he didn't go into frank zappa's band was because he wanted to do drugs and all of that which frank didn't allow so yeah, just my opinion
i don't get what you mean by "even though the Hendrix thing" i think that if more modern day guitarists were heavily inspired by jimi the way john is the music scene would be a lot different in a better way
John was offered a spot in The Mothers of Invention, but turned it down because of Franks strict no-drug policy, he is NOT mocking him, that cover just sucked because he lookes like hes fucked up
I can play 7/8 time... I mean any human being can play it with practice... So is not the point... What a musician is?
John Lennon never played ryhtmic dissonace and inspired all those musicians you mentioned...
I agree John are too far from those guys, all of those were students. But the question is could those people be brilliant without studing?? I don't believe so...
are u kiding i do respect ur opinion but how could call frusciante a faker his great..his improved so so much since wenever he did that frank zappa thing and his guitar riffs and his singing are sooo good.
I found to way to actually ENJOY this clip and its this: watch it while imagining he is actually auditioning for FZ's band, and try to imagine what Frank would say to him after he'd finished..lol
This guy would have made into Frank's band? Frank would have chosen this guy like he chose Steve Vai and Mike Keneally and Warren Cuccurullo? I don't buy it.
thats wrong thefantasticejir, he didn't go to zappa's band because john wanted chicks and drugs, and he realized that he couldn't of had that in zappa's band. and at the time, when john was going to go to zappa's band he really hadn't done any drugs at all
Absolutely, Zappa himself said in an interview in Guitar Player Magazine Feb 1983 that people who had no chance of getting into the band would audition anyway, they would: "do it just to say they auditioned, which would be like a professional credit feather in their cap." Those are Franks actual words. If someone enjoys John's playing that's totally fine, but there's no way he would have passed an audition for Franks band.
actually to add to that john was asked to join zappa and but he wanted to experiance the life of being a rockstar and he wanted to use drugs and w/e so he said no and later went to the peppers
Nah, Frank was actually pretty anti-drugs. Inca Roads was a piece of natural creativity, just like any other Zappa piece. I know John is a HUGE fan, and so I was wondering if he's seen a Zappa Plays Zappa show yet, because I went to see them last May, and it kicked balls!!
Clearly the most serious cover ever performed. So glad people take it seriously as such.

First, I wouldn't say Frusciante was particularly "gorgeous" in the video.
Second, I agree with the people who say there was no way he could have gotten into Zappa's band.
Anyone that cuts their music class to do other things is NOT someone Zappa would have allowed into the band.
He would have been only 17 when Zappa held his last batch of auditions. NO WAY he would have beaten Mike Keneally into the band.

I found to way to actually ENJOY this clip and its this: watch it while imagining he is actually auditioning for FZ's band, and try to imagine what Frank would say to him after he'd finished..lol
hakanozelguitarist 4 years ago
He did audition for Frank's band, in fact he woudl have made it except Frank didn't like his copious drug use.
thefantasticejir 4 years ago
This guy would have made into Frank's band? Frank would have chosen this guy like he chose Steve Vai and Mike Keneally and Warren Cuccurullo? I don't buy it.
pleximold 4 years ago
thats wrong thefantasticejir, he didn't go to zappa's band because john wanted chicks and drugs, and he realized that he couldn't of had that in zappa's band. and at the time, when john was going to go to zappa's band he really hadn't done any drugs at all
jerkwang69 4 years ago
Absolutely, Zappa himself said in an interview in Guitar Player Magazine Feb 1983 that people who had no chance of getting into the band would audition anyway, they would: "do it just to say they auditioned, which would be like a professional credit feather in their cap." Those are Franks actual words. If someone enjoys John's playing that's totally fine, but there's no way he would have passed an audition for Franks band.

Oh please. You have no clue.

actually to add to that john was asked to join zappa and but he wanted to experiance the life of being a rockstar and he wanted to use drugs and w/e so he said no and later went to the peppers

zappa hated drugs....see "cocaine decisions"

Frank zappa never did drugs her tried a few joints when he was young and hated it
Mgho0or 5 years ago
Nah, Frank was actually pretty anti-drugs. Inca Roads was a piece of natural creativity, just like any other Zappa piece. I know John is a HUGE fan, and so I was wondering if he's seen a Zappa Plays Zappa show yet, because I went to see them last May, and it kicked balls!!
