This was weird back in 1976 because I believe it was on PBS for free on tv but then it played a few weeks later at the theater.

@MrChameleon2010 In the 34 years since the film came out this is the first time I've heard anything like this. MGM spent somewhere between $8-9 million (a substantial budget in 1976) on making the film, and I'm positive they wouldn't doom their chances of box office by airing it for free on public television a few weeks in advance. Likely you saw a preview or interview show that may have featured clips from the movie, but not the entire film.

@robatsea2009 I just remember it happening. Or maybe it was at the theater and was there for several months and then ended up on PBS while still in theaters. But I remember it happening even though I was very young.

@MrChameleon2010 Pretty much everyone at some point or another has their childhood memory play tricks on them; it's just a fact of age. MGM sold first broadcast rights to CBS and were paid a royal sum (millions) for it; networks used to pay fortunes to have first-broadcast of movie blockbusters and would not dare allow it to be shown on public television first. It would be taking money out of their pockets (ad revenue), and PBS simply did not have funds to compete (nor an interest to do so)

@robatsea2009 I didn't have my mind play tricks on me.. but you're right. Here is what happened. I was talking to my brother. I remember it was on TV at the same time (or a few weeks earlier). Turns out the reason I thought this was it was the following year (or 78) that it was in fact on PBS (as he remembered too) but we saw it the following week at the theater at a matinee they had on Saturdays for 50 cents. They would show older movies instead of first run. Some theaters still do that. :)
