Um.. I tried playing this game.. Its fucking horrible.. It makes no sense, they tell you to go to fucking places that don't even exist in the game, combat is lame, graphics aren't bad and the anime cutscenes are the best part about this otherwise wretched game >>

I really want to get this but I think the only downsides are the added pop up pictures and voice acting that the original didn't have. I prefer using my imagination when it comes to older JRPGs. Plus Rena looks a little too young here.
this game brings back great memories from when i was younger. i loved this game. I do agree with Rena looking like pedo-bait tho, that kinda threw me off when i first saw her new design. i think i may pick this up for my psp and revisit a classic.
@PrinceOF9Imagination the only Star Ocean game I can think of for the ps2 is Star Ocean: Till The End of Time, you may have to clearify me on that if I'm wrong, but if I'm right in what game I think you are talking about, Star Ocean: Till The End of Time is actually the third in the series, not the second

I just wish gamers would stop acting like the second story didn't put star ocean on the map, like most only remember Star Ocean 1, when it was never released outside of japan (until the reboot in '08).
@mccinley17 get combat abilities for multi hitting. some weapons have that ability on their own (go eternal sphere) XD Since they changed a lot of names for the PSP version, i cant rly tell you exactly what to get.
@mccinley17 You posted your comment a month ago so I hope you're still interested:) The sword "Eternal Sphere", when used, several blue stars come out of the weapon and hit the enemy. Even if knocked back after the initial attack, the monster is still hit by the stars. Slayers Ring gives a characters attacks multiple hits, but without anything fancy like blue stars. An accessory. Angel Armband will make several blue stars come from a weapon just like with the Eternal Sphere. Also an accessory.

this is the game I´m currently playing on psp...and I´ve played it like 6 times in a row now so yeah it´s good! but it´s so damn short, I can beat the game in under 20 hours easily. and the other characters you can recruit really don´t get a lot of face time in the game. other then that this game is godlike. I suppose the thing that makes it good are stuff like private actions, recruiting different characters and having different combinations....and the characters are awesome

I freakin love this game and the first one. i played them both and got to the max lvl with all chars. Faerie Light was at max 999 times used in both games. I'm the master at this game. now with the combat in this game do you do the actual fighting or is it like final fantasy 1 and 2 with the combat where you make the selection to attack.
I really wish I could love this series. In the 1st two star ocean games, you just need to mash onto the X button, and everything goes fine, which makes combat extremely boring. Third one was just, my GOD, the damn dungeons; they were waaay too big, and you had to trek through them.
I really hope Last Hope is a much better star ocean than the other three... =/
I have this game on my psp and i did'nt really like it much from the start but as i am getting through it seems to be getting better and better. I think that the combat style of the game makes this a very unique RPG. Although I do not appreciate Claude swearing when he gets hit.
Am I the only one who found the (objectively bad) voice acting and (kind of strange) localization in the PS1 version wonderful? Did no-one else find some endearing quality in the way that Rena's tractor beam spell used her Japanese voice actress? Or that characters often had weird names (I'm lookin' at you, Gyoro and Ururun!)? It's like re-translating Final Fantasy Tactics (which I know has been done); even though the translation is certainly better, something is lost along the way.

@LordAbsu - At first I wanted to disagree with you, but when I saw her description at 2:14 - "18 year-old girl" - it confirmed your account. At least Claude looks not that much older than Rena, but... I wish they'd make the characters look their ages. It's not even porn, so it's not like they have any reason to put 18 on paper for pseudoplausible deniability.
This game isnt THAT straightforward...especially compared to SO1...yes there is a go here now, go here next....BUT you can go exploring as soon as you get past the second town ( salva) so its not like the game forces you to go to the next spot....which is nice...PSSST after salva go left and look for some mountains ( the one with a bird nest at its peak) ...stay near the entr. and try and fight the purple balloon guys...they wiel extra EXP and only dmg your mp
@420freddy yeah, and you should travel to the southern porttown past Celine's hometown (Mars I think) great weapons and armor which lets you grind in the mt. you mentioned with more ease... up lv. 25-30 without it taking that much time :)

i purchased this game recently and let me tell you....it's incredible.
i have the playstation version of this game and although claudes voice isnt as good...people...get over it, it was great of them to add voices to the game. all of the main characters have voices, and it really adds life to the game.
the battle system is one of the most fun ive ever experienced in ANY rpg. a revolutionary real time battle system with many skills that are eye candy while watching it on your psp
I'm still workin' on First Departure, but I'm glad to see that Second Evolution still retains some aspects of it, such as how the menu and specialties, even some of the enemies look the same (take Lizard Axes and Wolves).
I started the Star Ocean franchise with The Second Story (first incarnation of Second Evolution), so I can't wait to see how well this game turns out when I finish First Departure!
If you started with the Second Story you probably wont like this one..... the new voice acting just changes the characters too much.... I mean they even named Ashtons Dragons Creepy and Weepy..... ... thats just HORRIBLE

I played First Departure last year, and I wasn't overly impressed. There was some funny dialogue in it (especially in private actions) and combat could be fun, but otherwise it was kinda flat. I'll probably get this at some point though
Even if you play the original version of this (PS1) it still gets better and the story and gameplay is just so good and true to being an RPG. One of my fave game and my very first RPG to play back then.
hey guys, I'm planning to get a psp and I'm really hesitating between this and ff crisis core. This is one of my favorite games and brings so much memories from the ps1 version haha, but CC also has an intriguing story, so it's kinda hard for me, but now that I've learned that you can play Rena as MC (although it doesn't change muc haha), it was kinda of a win for me, so... can anyone help me?? =P Thks guys!
Crisis Core is very good. It is much like Star Ocean in that it's easy to get into but it also seems to be smarter. It automatically launches fireballs when you are further away. I like that you have all kinds of stuff right off the bat. You can change your attack from a bunch of options quickly with the buttons. It looks awesome too. Quickly you will see the cool stuff, no dungeon crawling etc. Jumps right into everything you usually get later in games. This game was fun though too.
why oh why did they change the animation style? it looks so flat when they show the detailed characters. also why did they need to change the original voices? i really liked the original voices. maybe just nostalgia. but i think claude's voice was certainly better...
exactly its a shame! i played it when i was a kid and i loved the detail in the outfits and the hair. rena's hair here looks stiff. not detailed and in her original portrait her hair was asymmetrical which i always thought was really cool. also you can barely see her moon hair pin which is significant in her story and they changed her socks... i dunno maybe i'm just too attached since this was my favorite game when i was like. ten. >_>
i agree completely. so3 and so4 i've heard are not nearly as good either. a friend played "till the end of time" and while i didnt play it i did witness it hanging in the same room and i have to say, not in the least bit impressed. so2 was near flawless (all but the leveling unfortunately. i see that as the one setback)otherwise it felt like a great game mixed with a interactive fabu

I like the revamp they did, it shows that they at least remember their past works. Which are plenty better than their recent stuff.

@LordAbsu - At first I wanted to disagree with you, but when I saw her description at 2:14 - "18 year-old girl" - it confirmed your account. At least Claude looks not that much older than Rena, but... I wish they'd make the characters look their ages. It's not even porn, so it's not like they have any reason to put 18 on paper for pseudoplausible deniability.

This game isnt THAT straightforward...especially compared to SO1...yes there is a go here now, go here next....BUT you can go exploring as soon as you get past the second town ( salva) so its not like the game forces you to go to the next spot....which is nice...PSSST after salva go left and look for some mountains ( the one with a bird nest at its peak) ...stay near the entr. and try and fight the purple balloon guys...they wiel extra EXP and only dmg your mp

@420freddy yeah, and you should travel to the southern porttown past Celine's hometown (Mars I think) great weapons and armor which lets you grind in the mt. you mentioned with more ease... up lv. 25-30 without it taking that much time :)

not to mention theres multiple endings and you can play as two playable characters. they redid the graphics on the world map, it looks a lot better.
any rpg fan needs to buy this game. having it on the psp to play anywhere is something i always dreamed about.
this and final fantasy vii are the two rpgs i play most on my psp....both amaZIN

i purchased this game recently and let me tell you....it's incredible.
i have the playstation version of this game and although claudes voice isnt as good...people...get over it, it was great of them to add voices to the game. all of the main characters have voices, and it really adds life to the game.
the battle system is one of the most fun ive ever experienced in ANY rpg. a revolutionary real time battle system with many skills that are eye candy while watching it on your psp

I'm still workin' on First Departure, but I'm glad to see that Second Evolution still retains some aspects of it, such as how the menu and specialties, even some of the enemies look the same (take Lizard Axes and Wolves).
I started the Star Ocean franchise with The Second Story (first incarnation of Second Evolution), so I can't wait to see how well this game turns out when I finish First Departure!

If you started with the Second Story you probably wont like this one..... the new voice acting just changes the characters too much.... I mean they even named Ashtons Dragons Creepy and Weepy..... ... thats just HORRIBLE

If you noticed, they changed the outfits too, so that's the biggest give away. Plus, I'm pretty sure it's two different animation studios.

I played First Departure last year, and I wasn't overly impressed. There was some funny dialogue in it (especially in private actions) and combat could be fun, but otherwise it was kinda flat. I'll probably get this at some point though

Im playing Dragon Quest v on my ds at the moment and this one on my psp. Its good , but I think I prefer the Dragon Quest series more.

Even if you play the original version of this (PS1) it still gets better and the story and gameplay is just so good and true to being an RPG. One of my fave game and my very first RPG to play back then.

hey guys, I'm planning to get a psp and I'm really hesitating between this and ff crisis core. This is one of my favorite games and brings so much memories from the ps1 version haha, but CC also has an intriguing story, so it's kinda hard for me, but now that I've learned that you can play Rena as MC (although it doesn't change muc haha), it was kinda of a win for me, so... can anyone help me?? =P Thks guys!

Crisis Core is very good. It is much like Star Ocean in that it's easy to get into but it also seems to be smarter. It automatically launches fireballs when you are further away. I like that you have all kinds of stuff right off the bat. You can change your attack from a bunch of options quickly with the buttons. It looks awesome too. Quickly you will see the cool stuff, no dungeon crawling etc. Jumps right into everything you usually get later in games. This game was fun though too.

why oh why did they change the animation style? it looks so flat when they show the detailed characters. also why did they need to change the original voices? i really liked the original voices. maybe just nostalgia. but i think claude's voice was certainly better...

exactly its a shame! i played it when i was a kid and i loved the detail in the outfits and the hair. rena's hair here looks stiff. not detailed and in her original portrait her hair was asymmetrical which i always thought was really cool. also you can barely see her moon hair pin which is significant in her story and they changed her socks... i dunno maybe i'm just too attached since this was my favorite game when i was like. ten. >_>

SO2 still is my favorite game, the original version is anyway. Tri-Ace wasn't involved in the remake and Square-Enix really did this an injustice.

i agree completely. so3 and so4 i've heard are not nearly as good either. a friend played "till the end of time" and while i didnt play it i did witness it hanging in the same room and i have to say, not in the least bit impressed. so2 was near flawless (all but the leveling unfortunately. i see that as the one setback)otherwise it felt like a great game mixed with a interactive fabu
