If you ask me what the purpose in life i think most time of very great things, but at a realistic level i like to belive that quite everything in life purpose is simply what humans and other creatures have done over the years since they appeared. And that can be said in just one word.SURVIVE.We live,we breed, and we die.Id love to say more and comment on many beliefs at spiritual, fizical and theories on life. But it cant be expressed like this.
I just don't want to go through my entire life believing in one thing, and then, at the end of it all, realize that I led the wrong life. I might not get another chance at being a human again.
The tough part about the meaning of life is that we really don't know what the meaning is. Nothing smarter than a human has ever told us. We're all just guessing at this question. Is the point to be happy? Is it to be sad? Is the point to worship a god or should we all be selfish? Do animals and other lesser beings know their purposes, but us humans don't? We can't tell because we can't talk to them.
@CountDOODOO Judging by the animals, the meaning of life is to procreate. We get caught up in the grandeur of our humanness and think we are suppose to do remarkable things. In reality our role is just to continue the species. Beyond this animals follow their instincts and intuition. Helping each other is often an intuitive pulse within humans. We're really not that special and take our lives far too seriously. This whole 'grand purpose' idea does more harm than good. Just BE.
@rosendojrca The underlying law of nature is effectively and observably the way of all things. A process for firsthand, empirical identification of the underlying law of nature is expected to be made public in the not-so-distant future. Google the underlying law of nature, if you'd like, for more information.
dam dude i ask myself that shit all the time cause i feel some people just don't have a life and are fine wit that shit. I just hate people with beer inraged ego's. I just want those green men that fold and always give me give me give me. Benjamins baby
If the purpose of life is representing god then why are we hated so fuckin much by people? Jesus was hated but he recieved the most hatred and persecution so that we won't have to suffer as much. My motto is love god only..FUCK THE WORLD!!!!!!
@vagabondsteve I greatly respect your oppinions. I have issues that I would contest (but only few). I have finally seen someone on Youtube saying something of real worth directly to the camera & I doubt I could articulate my thoughts to challenge. I've had a fucking enlightening day!
times. And within some little voice in my heart says it's okay. And there's nothing to worry about. But the fear comes back to my mind from time to time. And with it, the question of life and why. I'll think why the universe? Why the planets? Why the people? Why no other humans on another nearby planet? It overwhelms a human mind to think those things. So.. the purpose of life leads my mind to fear. I'm curious what you think of this, Steve? Any words of wisdom for this kind of thinking?
Great question. The mind/ego is an insatiable lion whose always seeking more. We expend so much precious life energy contemplating the unknowable. Which provides little to no fruit. Instead explore the dimension within. Observe without resistance the monkey mind. Realize this is not you. Then practice stillness. Sit on park benches like Eckhart. Walk, read, listen to music, journal, or be creative. Finally the best way to overcome the burden of the ego is to invest in the life of others.
Here is some blunt honesty for you. I wonder what the purpose of life is often because I fear what will happen when I die. Whether that be tomorrow or 80 years from now. I feel fear when I consider "What if there is a Jesus or some such deity that I haven't made very happy and I go to hell if some such place exists?" I worry that loving people and being a good person as it comes naturally to me (most of the time.. I'm not perfect of course) is not enough. And I do try to look within at these-
I agree about bettering the lives of others and making the world a better place. There are many things people can do in life. I have done volunteer work, gone on peace marches, just a couple things to try to help the world.
I have done many years of volunteer work for hospice, tutor children etc.
Yes, of course this give one an inner feeling of something good, but more important is this:
You really get to know yourself and your purpose on earth when you help others. This is what spirituality is all about.....knowing who you are and why you are here.
Thank you. The struggle in me is whether I want to be financial prosperous and make the sacrifices necessary to achieve that and reap the benefits of that. Or, on the other side of this dualism, to dedicate my life for others through volunteer works of compassion and reaping the benefits of genuine humaness. Yes, its is an ego thing, but its part of my struggle. THanks again.
What does your Inner Compass say? You are young, free, and have the rest of your life to make money. It is human nature to want to KNOW what path we should take. Instead just open ONE door at a time. The universe will reveal the next door in due time. Moving in a direction is more important than having all the answers. Life becomes a magical ride when we abandon our attachment to security, comfort, safety, and money. A life of faith, risk, & adventure leaves man on his deathbed without regrets.
I dont see many contradictions here. What I gather is just do. Without striving to figure out the one and only RIGHT path, instead, just choose or GO. Im not sure which word to use in that last sentence.
Very eloquently stated, Steve! I agree with you completely. That's why I'm an activist! And clearly, so are you! :) Spirituality should be the fuel for making the world a better place, not just a goal in its own right. You have a real passion for helping others which is wonderful. I am confident that once this compassion is awakened in others, this world will become a better place for all.
Funny. The logical position without evidence is disbelief. We have no evidence for an ultimate purpose/achievement. So the logical position is that there isn't one.
My stomach only server purpose becuase I personally have wants and desires. The universe has never been shown to be a being that has personal wants and desires. If I were dead my stomach has no meaning.
From my EXPERIENCE there is ultimate achievement & purpose. I get positive spiritual feedback when I engage in random acts of kindness. I get negative internal feedback when I am angry, greedy, or hurt others. Have you not had the same experiences?
I wouldn't call it spiritual feedback. There is a natural explanations for the "feeling" you are having. A sociopath for example can have a positive feedback from engaging in acts of hurting others. All this proves is you have a brain that functions as what we expect in a society.
So you personally feel no spiritual difference between harming someone vs acts of love. It is your premise it is all societal conditioning? Does your soul not know the difference of right and wrong absent of society?
Our brains give us the "feel goods" for doing things that help society. A sociopath doesn't get the "feel goods" from things that are socially helpful.
No evidence for a soul, so no it doesn't.
In the absence of society there is no one to do wrong or right too.
Thanks you. I hope you have learned something. Also if you are interested in learning more about the topic, you can look up stages of moral development.
Such a difference between Bible thumping Christians and those who have a servants heart like Jesus. Non-believers are much more receptive to ACTS of love vs words of condemnation.
When people pray and especially when they meditate, there is a number of things which happen in the brain. A decrease of pareital activity primarily accounts for selflessness. These same effects probably occur during entheogenic states of consciousness. Rythmic dancing, music, gapping out, etc... they are all lapses in selfhood which are quite peaceful. The self is the criminal. However, asceticism is also dangerous. A middle way is advisable. Indeed both Buddha and Christ refer to this.
You are absolutely correct my friend. Indeed this is the common thread amongst all traditions. From worship of a goat, to Yahweh, to praying to keep the universe together. All are deleterious to the self. As being merely part of something much greater. Gotama Buddha taught the method of meditation to acheive selflessness. Anatta, non-selfhood, a rejection of atman (soul) which is the source of samsara (suffering). Parallels exist in Biblical scripture as well.
I think this guy is making big bucks off others emotional issues.
