Remember when learning to self rescue on nice flat water that in the real world it might be a 2 meter + swell with an off shore wind ,,Start in the pool but practice in the real world,,Never kayak alone ;)
I'm a novice but I once argued with a kayak vet that you should somehow attach the paddle to the craft. I once tipped in the ocean and had a heckuva time trying to catch the kayak as it went with the current, but I couldn't abandon the paddle because I wouldn't have been able to get it once I got inside the kayak. A cord seems like no-brainer.
@texbexobx47 ,,Been in and out of a kayak at sea in bad weather to appreciate the leash ,Even if doing an endo surfing the sea swell the only connect between you and the kayak is the leash,,Even if you do drop your paddle/wing blade it will act as a drogue and give you some chance of reaching your yak,,,The most difficult aspect is getting out through the "surf zone" and back in ,;)
