I remember this as well, the Rangers were in the midst of their late-season freefall that year; Corey Hirsch got called up from Binghamton to play in goal for NYR & was awful in both games. This one, a 10-4 Pens win @ MSG, all but sealed the Rangers' fate that year. Also, the Pens were running up their league-record 17-game winning streak at the time as well.....
I was at this game, and I'm a Rangers fan. It was a dismal time in a dismal season (Thank God next year was the greatest year ever) but me and my friend stayed till the end, and as bad as it was we felt privileged to have witnessed something this special.
@dzanier I think what everyone that night realized was that not only was it 5 goals for Mario, but the culmination of chasing down Pat Lafontaine to win the scoring title after having to sit in a Pittsburgh hospital for cancer treatment just a couple months before this game.
Was at this game. Ranger fans hated Mario, but even started to cheer for him after 4th goal. Gave him standing ovation after 5th, as end of video shows. Ranger fans watching history, and we all knew it. Not often you get to see a great do something like this.
I remember watching this game with my father...it was a Friday evening and even my mother watched and this was a clinic.....My father said that Lemieux's first goal, the slap shot, looked like it went through Hirsch.
Mario played 60 games that year in '93 and posted 69 goals and 91 assists for 160 points. Would of loved to see him play 80 games that year to see if he could of broken Gretzky's 92 goals and 215 points. Just a unreal talent!
g\the third goal on the shorthanded breakaway was SICK!!!!!! Tommy B made a beautiful pass. See how Mario saw the Rangers D making a change and stayed out at centre ice knowing that Tommy was smart and good enough to make that play. Mario's intelligence was his greatest asset.
They cut it at the best part,Ranger fans gave him a LONG standing ovation, that was so cool.

wow Lemieux 160 points in 60 games that year. When Gretzky had a record 215 points in 1986 he had 162 points in 60 games.

Look at how he receives the puck and sets up the show on the first goal. All in one motion.
