  • I have no idea how to use photoshop so this makes no sense at all to me

  • neat, i wonder if you can get a scene with all the doctors in it. keep up the good work.

  • Absolutely stellar work - wonderful. Hope to see something this good fron the Beeb for the 50th.

Not a criticism by any means (clear from this labour of love that you are a true perfectionist) but in the section from Unicorn and the Wasp you appear to have missed deleting Donna's leg as you can still see her jeans behind Davids leg as he exits the TARDIS. Please don't mistake this for ungrateful nature but you know it is the fans credo to nit-pick lol!

  • You edit frame by frame with 25 fps? That is heroically diligent! I wondered if you used some video edit tricks to track down objects and remove the rest... so you didn't.

    You are truly wonderful!

  • With your skills I think you should work in the Doctor Who restoration team. You really know your way around photoshop.

  • I use PS a lot so i know how much work is involved filling in all those bits. I have to say that your work is excellent and appreciated.. if you're not working in the CGI dept at a film studio, you really should be!

  • so thats how you pronounce BabelColour!

  • Its pretty well done. Though I can't help thinking you made it harder for yourself then needed by using Photoshop to achieve the effects. Some of the shots I reckon didn't need to be done frame by frame etc.

  • @babelcolour Dear babelcolour, why did you mask out the UNIT soldier at 3:44? The doctor enters the car with an soldier anyway?

  • so much work which turned out into a brilliant job keep up the work! ha it reminds me of how I had to do frame by frame editing of a school project due in the next day. Made me a little mad with not much patience :P

  • so how do you actually make a "matte"?

  • I could never do things like mattes,I'd have just cropped it.

  • Thank you Stuart for your marvelous work and sharing how you've done things. You Sir are a true talent. Thank you for sharing all the wonderful work you do!

  • Wow, good job, man. Nicely done.

  • Fantastic work! From one Artist to another I admire your patience and the passion that drives you. Well done my good man. Cheers!

  • It's truly amazing how much effort you put into making these.

  • Hi, its interesting I stumbled across this because I was just discussing the impossibility of them ever making a story with all 12 Doctors in it ( once they get to the final regeneration) but could u please tell me whats the beautiful flute rendition of the Who theme called and where did u get it? Do you have it uploaded so I could listen to it on its own at all?

  • you may have already been asked this question but what version of Photoshop are you using?

  • I have a great deal of respect for you, if I'd had to do all that work I would've managed about two-thirds of a second of footage before giving up, kudos!

  • It would be a cool idea if u made reconstructions of the 60's missing episodes

  • magic!

  • that is amazing and i was wondering how do you make the videos into frames? i wanted to do something with different doctors but i dont know how to do that

  • Excellent Video....May i ask what the music is?.....the slowed down theme is great!! xx

  • Very interesting how you managed to do all these frames etc. I wouldn`t have a clue where to start. It must take hours on end to do. I wonder if any of the actual Dr Who actors have seen your work on here.

  • you must have the patience of a god!!! really enjoy your videos and i hope you keep it up :)

  • It is very good to see such effort put into a video like this!

  • Could I ask what the version of the who theme in the background is?

  • Hello I've seen something called adobe photoshop elements 8 is this similar to the one you have been using? Thanks

  • in one of your other videos you mentioned taking all the frames, turning them into JPG picsand then working on them in photoshop. How do you turn the frames into pictures?

  • What a lovely descriptive video. Can't wait for Ten Doctors part 3. You are so clever and dedicated.

  • You are very good with photoshop.

  • i cant wait till u make part 3 of 1o doctors !!

  • you sound alot liike steven moffat

  • Good heavens, I thought you were using some really powerful movie software, not Photoshop. Crikey! Well done, that must have taken ages. I have Photoshop, maybe I'll give it a go, but I'm afraid of developing eye-strain! That must have taken ages. "Well done' is an understatement!

  • Great work. This could be the most creative works I've ever seen

  • U are my idle for doing this :D

    I love u. :D (homo intended)

You are great at this. And u make the coolest things. Ur awsome :D

  • That sounds so, so time-consuming. Having to do those effects on every single frame.. Still, was very worth it! :)

  • woh you are a genius

  • Wow, that must have taken you such a long time to do. Kudos.

  • Just brilliant!

  • When I saw the start of this video, my jaw dropped. It then came off my mouth, fell on the ground and rolled down the street.

  • No seriously where did you get the slow version of the theme thats used in the background?? PLEASE? x

  • wow ur very talented - i'm lucky that i have software to do this easily, so i take my hate of to ur hard work.

  • Pure genius!! There's nothing else that can be said - I think you deserve a few Jelly Babies!

  • Always luv peeks behind-the-scenes at how things were created for television & film...and now the web! Can't express my admiration of your work on these videos enough...really well done!

  • I've played around with a lot of the products in Adobe's Creative Suite, though not with the dexterity, talent, and imagination that you displayed. I'm absolutely stunned that you did this all in Photoshop frame by frame. I can't imagine what you might do with some of their other programs. Thank you for sharing how you did it and I look forward to seeing what you come up with next.

  • Great Work!!!! where can i get a copy of the Beautiful slowed down version of the Doctor Who theme?...Its lush!! Cant wait to see The 10 Doctors pt 10!!! xxx

  • nice confidential thing!

  • Must have taken you a long while to do that. But I've seen the finished product and I think it was all worth it.

  • You're my hero.

  • this is amazing!!!

  • Goodness me - I'm even more impressed now that I know it was all done frame by frame!

  • this is near animation great work on continuation this will be indeed a great gift for christmas " the ten doctor part two" iam waithing for it

  • Excellent work! Doing anything frame by frame would drive me mad.

  • Me too!

  • You've created some amazing effects, wow!!!!!!!

  • You mention the 'Clear Tool' in Photoshop. I've been using Photoshop and Premier for years, but have never found that. Where is it and how do you apply it to a moving image?

  • You misunderstand if you think I apply it to moving images. I work frame-by-frame in Photoshop. If you select the brush tool, the "mode" window has a drop-down menu and you can pick the 4th one down, called "Clear". This is only selectable if you have one layer overlaid on top of the other.

  • Ah, now I'm with U. My mistake.

  • @BabelColour thank you for a wonderful "behind the scenes" look at a fantastic film :)

I am really looking forward to part 2, in the mean time, can you suggest a good beginners guide to using photoshop please ?

thanks again for all your great videos :)

  • Incredible editing!! can't wait for part 2.

  • Wow, this is just fantastic! Keep up the good work!

  • superb work

  • You have made Photoshop skills!! Bravo!!

  • Wow! That is a lot of work, mate. But it was very worth it. It looks absolutely wonderful! Just goes to show that hard work really does pay off! Cheers! And can't wait for part two!

    ^_^

  • fantastic - you deserve a medal, perhaps an OBE and a fullsize dalek in real gold

wonderful work - please keep them coming - we really enjoy watching all your new short films and look forward to part two of the 10 doctors.

thank you so much for sharing these with us and also for all the tips on film editing/

    yours truly

    another dr who fanatic

  • incredible, u deserve a TARDIS for your brilliant work!

  • Best thing ive seen

  • Cleverly done - thank you. I am interested in why you colour graded the first shot "downwards". I assume it was to match the poor-quality film transfer we expect from 1970s location footage and to match any scenes taken from similar sources, is that right? If so, did you have to make a policy decision not to upgrade the colour in the 1970s to the faithful or vibrant colours we expect today?

Also, are you working on 50 frames per second? Or a smaller number with intermediates done by computer?

  • That's an interesting question. I did initially try matching the old film footage colours to the new series pallette, but I have very rudimentary tools and when I got one thing looking right, something else in shot would look completely wrong, so I opted for the easier task of desaturating the new material and giving it a green bias to match the old. And I'm working with 25 frames-a-second, input and output. No intermediated frames generated or used.

  • Thanks, 25 fps is barely manageable, but it must still take you forever!

And I can see how it would be easier to lose colour rather than to add it, as you must know from your other endeavours.

  • Impressive as always, and its nice to see how you do things, cant wait for part 2

  • Fantastic stuff! Amazing what you xan do with a photoshop package, a bit of old Dr Who, and a vivid imagination!

  • canu make a star trek meets dr who crossover

  • I'm sure that if there were some fancy modern video software you wanted to use, with so many people enjoying your videos, all you'd have to do is put up a pay pal contribution link and a collection of small contributions would make it in no time!

  • WOW you are very very talented Babel. Such a gental voice to lol. Whens part 2 comeing matey?

  • I'm working on part two right now. I imagine it will be ready in December.

  • can you show it you acctualy making one please

  • Good heavens, no! Why would anyone want to see me sitting at my computer? Next there'll be requests to see me making one dressed as their favourite Doctor, or singing the theme tune. I don't want to become a performer! lol

  • That was very interesting! Thanks so much for sharing with us all. I'm really looking forward to episode two of The Ten Doctors.

  • Gracious that's an awful lot of work!! Thank you for your efforts! I really enjoy your videos.

  • and I thought I was good with photoshop. I need lessons.

  • Oh, wow! I've been watching your videos for quite some time now. I always assumed you had your hands on some super-duper-amazing editing software. I never ONCE suspected that you were so patient and talent as to produce these beautiful results with PHOTOSHOP.

    WOW!!!!

  • That's kind. I wish I had the money to buy some super-duper software, but I make do with what I have.

  • Wow you did this with programs I have, makes me feel like I should do stuff myself. Good job.

  • *applause*. How satisfying it is, to see a skill exercised so...err... skillfully.

I enjoyed both the product and your explanation. Thanks.

  • wow your voice sounds familiar to Peter Davison

  • That's a lot of work, honestly I think you could have done most of the shots in about 1/3 the time in Fusion or After Effects that are designed for matching a lot of the noise levels and tracking moving shots.

Looking forward to seeing what you do next.

  • Yes, that *was* a lot of work, but your suggestion is a tiny bit academic about Fusion or After Effects, since (a) I don''t have either and (b) I wouldn't know how to use them anyway! You may as well say it would been done in a 20th of the time if I had Paintbox or Harry (or whatever the modern equivelent is - I'm showing my age!) :)

  • i'm sure you could handle After Effects - it's photoshop with timelines!

very interesting vid, and demonstrating a lot of skill, but i cant help but think all those frames must have taken an awfully long time?

  • That's true, however I do think you probably could have learnt the skills in the time you saved. But I don't mind, the results look fantastic regardless.

  • Thanks for sharing that, very informative, you have much more patience than most of us, looking forward to part two! :)

  • I have to say, I was impressed by what you'd done -- but I was blown away when the end credits revealed you'd used Pinnacle Studio 9.

Have you considered investing in something like Adobe Premier? If you can do all that with just Pinnacle, heaven knows what you'd be capable of if you were actually using a tool designed for sophisticated video manipulation.

  • It never occurred to me when watching the episode that most of these shots had even been tampered with; it just goes to show what an incredible job you did!

  • Babelcolour, you are amazing! Thank you thank you thank you for all of your very hard work.

PS: Lovely to hear your voice...

  • Brilliant!Bloody briliant

  • when will part 2 be up

  • wow amazing

  • Amazing, incredible and Wow! Thank-you for this "making of". Very interesting. And Wow!

  • wow thank for that it was just fab to see how you did it cant wait for part 2

  • Fantastic!

Whats the background music in this film? Is it from the Dr who Jazz album?

  • wow this was absolutely amazin, it must've taken you years to get this good!!

  • Thanks for this.

Hell, it must have taken you forever, you must be incredibly patient to do all this, frame by frame.

Especially surprised (and impressed) these shots were achieved with Photoshop and not After Effects or something.

  • Thanks so much for giving us an idea of how painstakingly slow this process is. I could never do this, far to impatient. I am in awe.

Thanks again and really looking forward to part two.

  • Thank you for this informative and educational Dr. Who "Making Of" video ... we can see why it's taken you as long as it has to create it ... if I could have given you a 10* rating on the part 1, I would have, but am doing it here. Great job ... looking forward to part 2. 8^]>

  • Being one of the people that has asked how you do you work, i thank you for this making of. I could not imagine the hours of dedecation you have put in with such an out standing effort (wich is why i can forgive you for removing Ace lol). Keep up the great work - cant wait for part two.

  • WOW! that must have taken you ages!

    Looking forward to part 2!

    Jamie

  • how that looks like a lot of work. can't wait for the Ten Doctors part 2! bound to be brilliant with all the effort you put in

  • very intresting i must say cant wair for the 10 doctors part 2

  • Okay now I'm even more impressed.

  • Amazing work - more seamless than a lot of other professional work I have seen.

  • Your brilliant, i don't have photoshop anymore i need o get the full version but i don't have internet at home. and i really like making doctor who films. But anyway your videos are just brilliant.

I eagerly await the second part, the first part is just so brilliant. 5 stars.

  • Hells bells, I knew you'd stated you had spent months making this but... this is far more work than I ever would have guessed.

Out of all those I have seen making personal projects such as these you have to be the most devoted one I have ever seen.

  • The Beeb really needs to hire you. I bet you could do a "classic lost episode" from scratch 2-3 times a year if they paid ya right ;) I know I'd love it!

  • Thanks for the video - I knew a lot of work must have gone into making "The

Ten Doctors" but this just emphasises how painstaking the job is. Keep up the good work!

  • Huge thanks for that - facinating how you make it all - really enjoyed it.

  • Thanks for posting this. It was really interesting to find out how you did all that work. I'm looking forward to part 2! :)

  • Thanks so much. That was really interesting.

  • Absolutely brilliance, amazing job. Thanks for explaining all that, it's fascinating!

  • Fantastic job for in photoshop!

You could have done things faster by creating matt overlays in a program like after effects, or final cut pro. But you really have outshone other editing works with photoshop alone!

Some of these shots I actually forgot they had people in them! You did a fantastic job of removing characters!

  • Excellent Job sir,

I do so enjoy your tributes and fan vids. Keep up the good work!

  • Just when I thought your talents had been showcased, you're amazing at Photoshop too! =D

    Can't wait for part 2!

  • Very instuctive, thanks BabelColour.

  • Thank you so much for this. It will help imensly when I edit episode 5 of our torchwood spoof series. I'll be exploding a building behind our actor. Much cheaper to do it this way! This was really informative and really well done. Thank you very much.

  • thanks much, taught me some new tricks I will be using often.

  • Brilliant! Brilliant, brilliant. I didn't notice Ace not being there (it's not obvious! and I was wondering how you managed to get her out of every shot!) nor Donna! Nor the TARDISs actually, or the UNIT soldier which was just stunning work! Absolutely seamless really - and must have taken a while!

  • I go about it in a similar manner as I also have limited software. Very much like Mike Jittlov did in early stop-motion animation. You do amazing work...

  • Thanks for putting this up!

I found it really interesting - I love your stuff and its nice to get a glimpse behind the scenes.

  • well done babel its amazing to see how many small changes can make something great!

  • yes this is brilliant! I love your patience with these things! You are a role model to us all :)

  • Brilliant, thanks for this, just goes to show how much work and time you put into it.

    Much appreciated.

  • Fantastic!

  • if that was me i would have removed the U.N.I.T soldier completly.

  • But then the Doctor would have got into the passenger seat of an empty car! I think you'd have got yourself into a hole removing the driver - I need him for Part Two!

  • Brilliant m8

  • Amazing. Honestly with the software you had, that's amazing work. It must've taken forever to do that. You are a fantastic video editor.

  • That was cool. And must have taken you for ever and a day.

Also, you have a really Doctorish voice. I could just imagine you playing a new Doctor in a Big Finish thing, or whatever.

  • the way you made this video is extremely professional - the work is brilliant , ive seen nothing as good in terms of doctor who , and i hope you can get the doctors to talk to each other in part 2!

  • very professional editing and goo tutorial video, well done.

  • Cheers :)

  • I envy you , i really do , i cant do anything like that . . . . one day maybe , but in the here and now of my life , absolutely cant do anything like what you've done ! . . . .

Take it from me , you should work on those Classic Series DVD's , making improves and stuff .

  • Impossible as it seems, you have just gone up in my estimations, I thought you were just a fantastic editor, now I find that you're a computer effects expert, sign up to the doctor who restoration society and bring us back the missing stories.

Actually never mind that, help the mechmaster have his second empire comic made into an episodic series.

  • Hahaha. By no means a "computer expert". I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to do special effects using proper programs. I just know Photoshop and have time on my hands in the evenings :D

  • well ok you may not use automation or cg but you can still add or take from a film image-that could come in very handy

  • I can not come up with words to describe how amazing you are... and I can't believe how patient / inventive you are to have not only brought all these seemingly random shots together to create a new story, but to have done all the crazy editing you did.

    The Doctor would approve!

  • Thank you very much, Wolverinegal. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • That was really interesting...Your great at narrating things...Will there be a The making for part 2

  • If there's interest in another making of, I shall do one for Part Two as well. Let's see...

  • It's good to finally have a voice behind the BC name and see the incredible video manipulation techniques that goes into making these short films. Thank you so much for sharing this commentary on your hard work. =)

  • My pleasure :)

  • Fascinating little feature. You have the patience of a saint to do all that and I'm glad so I can enjoy the results.

  • I can thank my previous colourisation work for giving me the patience to tackle frame-by-frame effects. I used to have to hand-colour thousands of frames, so in comparison this was child's play :D

  • What a nice voice. You could narrate everything.

  • AMAZING!!! So, in a way the shots are simple but STILL time consuming. The sign of a good effect is one that no one even notices.

  • wow sound really time consuming but definatilly worth it

  • I absoloutly loved that small documentary, of just how you pieced all the frames of those episodes together, to produce the end result, which altogether is fantastic. I can't wait until The Ten Doctors part 2 and this has considerably brightened up my day :)

  • Brilliant! i've watched this four times now and it's better than the TV series, Well Done fella!

  • Only four times? Outrageous! GO and watch it another 10!

Only kidding, I appreciate your support :)

  • you make it sound so easy!!! But the work and time you put into this is worth it and very much appreciated by us viewers - we Doctor Who fans thoroughly enjoy your videos :o) Keep up the good work!

  • That's very kind. Thank you

  • Excellent, its good of you to take the time to explain it for us as well =D

  • Wow,Will be doing part two, behind the scenes,i liked how do it,you should work for the bbc, well done! for making this, its a brillent episode,i never new some things in the ten doctors, like the unit with the brown cap,and i cant wait for the 2nd with,

    a dalek! at christmas!

  • Very impressive and it goes to show how much work you put into this, not to mention how possible with wise usage of wide-spread tech. I look forwards to Part 2 and salute your editing prowess! :)

  • Quite the adept film maker. You should consider getting a job at the BBC or another company. All very cleverly done.

I expect it was a rather long process, but as a fellow Whovian I say that this is probably the best fan made Dr Who video ever made. Keep up the good work!

  • I'm a bit long in the tooth and lacking any experience in the industry to get a job doing this sort of work. But it's an enjoyable enough hobby!

  • You know what they say, you're only as old as you feel! But I guess if it becomes a day job it would lose the appeal as a hobby... Ah well. as long as you're still making these excellent videos its all good!

  • This proves we are only limited by how hard or far we are willing to go to achieve something--in most cases. :D Well done.

  • True.... and time. There were effect shots I would have liked to have done, but couldn't achieve them by the self-imposed deadline of September 3rd. That's why I'm being a bit vague about the release date for Part Two - I hope to do all the effects I want, rather than upload it 90% finished.

  • sweet!!

  • this is great mate

  • Awesome Work......5/5

  • Awesome, nicely done, looking forward to part two!

  • This is really fascinating stuff, so thank you for posting it. What you're doing is awesome!
