  • I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on an old system and I got a problem with it. Is there a way I can get my Ati Radeon 9800SE working on Ubuntu 11.04 properly? I pick my videocard on the Ati driver download page and it recommends me to download the 9.3 ati driver, but it does not support Ubuntu 11.04, only 9.04 I think. What should I do?

  • @DLDAcoustics I always like to follow manufacturer guidelines, but if you want you can always try a new driver and see how that goes but as for driver version, i cannot argue with the manufacturer, i have not tried using a version that far off. I could not tell you if it will work 100%.

  • Ubuntuhelpguy has posted the update in the comments section, please take a look for new instructions on how to install ATI driver properly and this will address some issues on ubuntu 11.10

  • Ok well i noticed with the official release of ubuntu 11.10 there is a problem with ia32-libs package so i did find the "unofficial" (official) proper install instructions through AMD website which leads to a wiki from that site just click on the ubuntu version you have and follow the instructions, that will solve any problems and will answer all your questions. Please go to the same video on my channel and the link will be there. I cant post it here but will email ubuntuhelpguy to update.

  • copy,paste,copy,paste.....where do i paste

  • @Abdelrahmanable21 Check out the comments for the same video on my channel which has the new install instructions which i found through the AMD website that resolves any and all issues including with ubuntu 11.10

  • @evoRomz It will work from what ive tested with 9.xx and up to 11.10.

  • i got error when download the package:

    arnold@arnold-linux:~$ sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++6 dkms libqtgui4 wget execstack libelfg0 ia32-libs

    Reading package lists... Done

    Building dependency tree

    Reading state information... Done

E: Unable to locate package ia32-libs

it says UNABLE TO LOCATE PACKAGE 1A32-LIBS

    please help

  • @Mr2ndhand Did you enable the source code repositories as stated in the video? and what version of ubuntu are you trying with?

  • @evoRomz Yes, its the same method just remember to make the change in the name of the ubuntu version in one the terminal commands.

  • where did you get this wallpaper?

  • @00Elwe "Google Images".

  • @vaina001 yes but what did you type?

  • @00Elwe Type "sh ati-driver-installer-11-7-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/oneiric". So here the last work which is the distro name "oneiric" is what i changed and if you use 11.04 then you change it to "natty" and remember to also change the ATI driver version number too "11-7" in this command. Did you download the text file from the link in the description? It has an example.

  • @00Elwe I think i searched "revolution" in Google Images.

  • . ..awesome,,

    .

    .

  • great video, relay helped :D !!!!

  • @pghg022 Thanks.

  • @vaina001 thanks i am using pinguy os witch comes with conky a system monitor but i want the weather gadget.

  • Please tell us how to customize ubuntu like your ubuntu

  • @ehabhamdy2012 Well everything I did to my desktop you can also, just install from ubuntu software center, AWN (dockbar), Screenlets and Compizconfig settings manager and the simple one also. After that the settings are up to you and feel free to play around a bit just remember to export your settings for compiz once you have your perfect desktop to have a backup.

  • when i install the ati driver from the system config (hardware) ubuntu goes slower

    Why?

  • @ehabhamdy2012 If you install the ubuntu ATI drivers from the "Additional Drivers" section of ubuntu and your PC gets slow it could be because they are older version driver of ATI, then maybe i would recommend trying my method of installing the drivers so you'll have a custom driver for you specific ubuntu version and the latest.

  • what is the sidebar thing called

  • @Jdwill1014 The on the right side i have two screenlets one called "clear weather" and the other "sysmonitor", to get them install screenlets from the ubuntu software center then just activate the screenlet you wish and customize, they have many options so you will have fun with that.

  • Hey Mike, nice tutorial. It is easy to follow, but then I run into problem..lol. Ya, that is sign and symptoms of a nooby..haha. Well, I get to the part where I run (sudo sh-ati---buildpkg/lucid) to create .bebs pkgs, it gives me error (sh: Can't open ati-driver-installer-11-8-x86.x86_64.run). Not sure what the problem is. Also, what is (sh) command for? Any help or suggestion would be appreciated. Thx man..

  • @badboy350 This is how your command should look like "sh ati-driver-installer-11-8-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/lucid" if its still not working let me know and i will try to find a solution but be patient as i'm also a noob as well.

  • @badboy350 One more thing remember to download the correct driver for your PC 32 or 64 bit.

  • @vaina001

Sorry Mike, been busy lately but just want u ti know that it worked out great.Thank you for all the helps and time.

  • @vaina001

Mike thank you for the great tutorial and the helpful responds now everything works great. Already subscribed mate.

  • I cant find the preferences in ubuntu software center

  • @MrEspinozaalex With ubuntu software center opened, go to the top menu, click on "edit", then "software sources" it will ask for password, once its typed in click on "other sources" tab and thats where you check both boxes to enable Canonical repos.

  • im looking for a way to make my channel better! any suggestions?!

  • what did you use to record this? i've noticed that recordmydesktop and fglrx don't get along too well, especially with compiz enabled..

  • @bamdadkhan I use ffmpeg to record and convert videos because with GtkRecordmydesktop you record, waiting for the encoding of video then have to upload. Ffmpeg records and transcodes on the fly so i stop record the video is ready and you can choose the codec for sound and video and what the container will be wether .mkv or .avi. and does have those glitch recordmydesktop has with compiz.

  • @bamdadkhan Meant to say ffmpeg doesnt have the glitches recordmydesktop has with compiz.

  • nice review mike, ive subscribed to your channel

  • @ADIMM0 Thanks, i will be making more in support of open source.

  • Why not just download a deb-file and double-click? I don't understand of installing the driver in this very complicated way. Building from source is pretty complicated. The tutorial is very well explained, but relies heavily on shell commands. Isn't this a very geeky method merely for getting an ATI driver?

  • Comment removed

  • @bhigr It is a little complicated but like i said you can just copy paste the commands and the only thing to change would be the version of ATI driver and name of your ubuntu distro. As for downloading one(1) deb file for installation i have not found, this operation does generate four(4) deb files for your ubuntu version for installation, so if you format and reinstall same ubuntu version you can use those 4 deb files, and thank you i do try to explain everything so nothing is left in the air.

  • Comment removed

  • @bhigr Only .run files from ATI website and ubuntu ATI drivers are too old.

  • Thank you for the video, but the terminal says this display:: 0 screen: 0 is it okay? in fglrxinfo

  • @cooptruman41 Is everything working properly like graphics and tearing?

  • Good video.

  • @ChaosTheory5789 Thank you, will be making more.

  • first

  • @Milkmypanda 2nd!

  • @UbuntuHelpGuy Can you please tell me how you did the transparent weather and the clock, would really appreciate thank you

  • @Waranle You have to install screenlets from "Software Center". The weather app is the ClearWeather screenlet and the other is Sysmonitor also from screenlets, you can customize to your taste but for the weather "opacity/transparency" is set to 0.80

  • @vaina001 Thank you :)

  • @Milkmypanda who cares.. -.-

  • @djplayer93 he do, i do!

  • @djplayer93 your mom does.

  • @Milkmypanda i do? why do you care?

  • @Milkmypanda how to install the Mac-liked theme as seen in the tutorial

  • @worldwideweblearning I dont know if this will answer your question but there is no Mac theme in this video, its just regular Gnome enviornment with bottom panel deleted and AWN(Avast Window Navigator) installed as bottom dock. Oh and this is ubuntu 10.10 in the video.
