  • On the sims 2 there is a man who looks just like Swan, I swear!

  • I really want to learn how to play that "one love that will stand by me" song on the piano. It's gorgeous.

  • ugh! hate this version...

  • Is it bad that I think that Swan is awesome?

  • Gerard butlers voice is still sexy and I think he is a great phantom

  • Am I the only one who finds all the bird imagery especially ironic since Paul Williams later went on to play the Penguin in “Batman: the Animated Series”?

  • lololol :) NICE VIDEO!

  • Few poeple realize Lloyd Webber also altered Sarah Brightman's voice at the ned of the title song.

  • Phantom of the Opera is still so much better

  • I loved the Gerard Butler part (LOVE him!) and the "This is Sparta!!!" part :D

  • I saw this one (4th Phantom film I saw) and absolutely hated it. I still hate it. It was just too creepy for me. This Phantom does gets props though for having a cool bird like mask and creepy voice

  • oh... my god... i have never laughed so hard as i did between 3:01 - 3:25 ! XD

  • Mr. Phantom Reviewer, which Phantom adaption is worse: this or the Dario Argento version. I think the Dario Argento version is worse. At least this Phantom is deformed

  • @punkviolingirl dario argento, hands down, is the worst remotely-phantom related piece of film in existance

  • @ArabellaWilmot I agree, but have you seen "Phantom of the Mall"? Also not good. Really not good.

  • @Raquethands I have actually, and I agree. haha I've seen a lot of terrible phantom spinoffs...it's kindof enjoyable, in a masochistic way, lol

  • I saw this movie a few years back, thinking it would be faithful to the Leroux novel. This movie was awful! I couldn't finish it, that's how bad it was

  • Sir, first off, Phantom of the Paradise was released by 20th Century Fox. However, I DID watch the movie and enjoyed it. It's like Winslow and Swan are a villainous pair in this movie, and Phoenix is the heroine. "What is this, kid? School time? I got a plane to catch. Look, a song is a song. You either dig it, or you don't. And I like your stuff, kid." Philbin said that to Winslow when they first met. It's a shame Beef was killed in this movie. He WAS pretty funny, wasn't he?

  • Interestingly enough, it was only a hit in Winnipeg, MB. I know, I was there!!

  • Interestingly enough, it was only a hit in Winnipeg, MB. I know, I was there!!

  • This was hilarious. I absolutely hated this movie, actually. I'm not a big fan of 70's culture, and this was just...ugh. But my head DID explode the first time, because I was expecting some Leroux stuff.

  • It's Gatchaman Phantom!!!

  • olq lq verdad esta muvis esta buenisima me justa mucho

  • who gives a fuck about shitty review...when you hit a search you always found stupid fake and review instead of streaming or part of the movies

  • Well, for some weird reason, I didn't get my comments about this on Pt. 2 of "Phantom" spinoffs, which I say, that redo of this DePalma wants to do, should be a little more faithful to the book...

And again, no Winslow as life's bitch, more like a total dork that snaps after his old classmate Swan (Now like Simon Cowell instead of the now convicted killer Phil Spector) has his thugs beat him to death when he finds out just how he gets famous...and half his face torched...

  • I couldn't get over how much Winslow's head swayed as he sang :D

  • the dead bird is not a crow, its a swallow.

  • This was brilliant and if you don't do this as a profession, you should! Couldn't stop watching. Nice job!

  • Ah, sorry. I didn't mean to repeat myself on my last post.

  • I don't think Gerard Butler's voice was altered. I once read an article where this interviewer visited gerard butler's house and heard him sing along to the phantom of the opera sountrack. He said that the two voices were exactly alike. You can read it yourself. He talks about the soundtrack on the last page. go to google and type in "300 things we didn't know about gerard butler. It will be the first link. The part about the singing is on the last page of the article

  • are the juicy fruits rehearsing or the beach bums?

  • Benny Hill's the shit!!!

  • Loved this movie. Definitely needed more Beef! Love that character!

  • That ending part with enchanting Gerard Butler's voice... you literally made me cry with laughter. HILARIOUS!

  • That last shot of Beef growling, it seemed like he was saying "I said no cameras!" lol

  • When i watched this film for the first time I absolutely hated it. Then some years later I tried to watch it without trying to find paralells to phantom of the opera and found this movie absolutely great.

One of the best soundtracks from all phantom based movies ever.

But what happened with part II of you review?

  • @Annybodys Its on Vimeo, MGM took part 2 down for some reason.

  • Ah thank you. I'm going to look for it.

I'm a phantom-fan for nearly ten years and watching all your reviews by now but there are some versions I didn't get my fingers on yet (like the secret of poto, guess there still is no DVD)

Hope you're doing some review of LND, cause it will take some time to come to Germany (after reading some reviews of the preview maybe I'll never get t see it ;-))

    Anyway thanks for answering.

  • @PhantomReviews why

  • I really want to see this!!

  • it is one of the best movies ever, well worth it!!

  • Paul williams also wrote music for the first muppet movie and for the new happy days musical.

  • Apparently Emmy was somewhat enhanced in parts too...

  • yea but at least she had expierience

  • when he plays at the piano dressed in the Phantom he kinda looks like freddy mercury...

  • Call me a sotfy but I think the part where Swan fixes the Phantom's voice is kinda sweet. Only because I'm a stupid 14 year old girl who loves POTO! XD . Oh and THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *Loved that* hehe

  • @AerithGainsborough11 Hey, I'M a stupid 14-year-old girl, too! YAAAAY!

  • @AerithGainsborough11 same here. that the ONE thing thing i liked about this movie. I'm an 18 year old girl who loves POTO! The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is my favorite adaption

  • What happened with part 2?

  • This is the best movie EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, it really is amazing. Even after all these decades, it a fantastic movie!

  • lol,what's that music at 3:03?

  • The theme tune to Benny Hill. It goes with anything!

  • wow, thanx!!! i've been trying to find out for a long time :)

  • @PhantomReviews Kind of like Phantom's overture underscore--needs moar underscore! *bangs fist*

  • I couldn't have said it better my self.

  • you can find the deleted scene on dailymotion, you see his face then he kinda run into the cop who was threatening him, so he shot him in the stomac, that's why you see blood on this part in the parkin lot, and he's got his hand on ths wound

  • I just saw part 2 on Vimeo. Why the frack did YouBoob have to ban it? I've seen much worse on this site.

  • Good review, watched part 2 and you give a really down-to-earth analysis. Like your style. Great film though, love it despite any flaws, agree that Beef is pretty amazing; "I know drug real from real real!"

  • "Mediocre singers have their voices digitally altered to the correct pitch and tone." Sad, isn't it? I wish autotune had remained the stuff of science fiction!

  • @Raven112358 you are a genius XD, best joke I'be heard about the crap they now a days in awhile

  • Great review. I love this film but you've brought out some elements in it I hadn't given much thought to. I've subscribed to your videos and will head off to Vimeo now to see the other part. Good work and good editing.

  • 7:27 onwaards has a rocky horror air to it!

  • except that this movie was made before ;)

  • Did the G Force cartoon copy the Phantoms costume for their characters. They are almost identical right down to the capes and helmets. I would appreciate any input on this.

    Still the best movie ever

  • HAHA. I hadn't even thought about that! I was actually looking that cartoon up recently--I was so disappointed to find out that the G-Force movie playing in theaters is about freakin' guinea pigs, seriously XD

But I think you're onto something. That costume is definitely something Japan would run with XD

  • Thanks for the reply. Hopefully one of the anime or movie buffs will come up with an answer. I will let you know what I find out

  • Good point!

  • this movie is the best movie in the world if anyone hates it i hate them this is probaly the best movie i ave ver seen other than requiem for a dream...

  • I'd like to see the whole movie now, it seems to have predicted the music industry of today!

  • It's posted on youtube.

  • Where is part 2 of this review?

  • He put it on Vimeo . Look on the "more info" above...

  • lol I think that the first time I watched this version was on AMC, and I agree, it was crazy.

  • NICE SPARTA JOKE!

  • I really should watch this again.

  • I have watched it again. It doesn't have the pathos of most Phantom versions, but maybe it's not supposed to. More of a satire/dark comedy than a straightforward adaptation. Jessica Harper is lovely and can sing well. As to the character's motivations, all I can say is fame will do wierd things to you.

  • Your Mommy n Dad had not even met...yert when we attended the Midnight screenings of P of the P...In Toronto,Canada...what a wonderful city and people!

Thanks for this and THANK-YOU GORGEOUS,SEXY TORONTO!!!!

  • There may be two reasons as to why Winslow's voice was destroyed - one is that when his face was maimed, he might have screamed so badly that his voice was permanately damaged. Speaking, unfortuantely from experience, if you scream for very long or at a particular pitch - you can severely damage your voice. The other reason could be that, if you look closely at the scene where he is maimed, his throat is turned - so he could have crushed his throat a bit by the machine.

  • This movie kicks so much ass. It really is something that you really can't take seriously.

The music rocks too. A+ movie

  • I have only seen the last 25 min of the film a few years ago by accident , and want to see the rest so thanks for this . The pt 2 of the review on vimeo was much higher quality ! Did ot know of it before so thanks ANOTHER time ....

  • I think Paul Williams more resembles John Denver than Elton John.

  • btw...im still waiting for george lucas to finally admit that his idea for darth vader was borrowed from both this movie, and doc doom

  • of course winslow is stupid

he is a reflection of many in the music industry who allow themselves to be fucked over and over again, for that one chance at fame

and watch closely...not once in the movie does de palma ever really portray him as a truly sympathetic character....

from the outset, he is pretty much an irritating asshole

  • 0:48 reminds me of elton john!

  • vimeo looks good, thanks for sharing the site.

  • For all those looking for part 2 of the review, go to vimeo and search the users for phantom reviews. That will be the home of any other videos that YouTube foolishly wipe!

  • @PhantomReviews Also check out phantomreviews . blip. tv for the whole review

  • I was wondering what happened to part 2. If YouTube and the money hungry corporations keep this kind of behavior up, they will destroy the meaning of "fair use." And, pardon me for sounding like Miss Obvious, but the law should not allow that to happen.

  • Okay, so why the hell did YouTube ban part 2 of my review and not part 1? At least be consistent. Damn you, Fox corporation! And damn you YouTube for screwing around with your users videos!

  • That's so stupid!!! Why? I was looking for it for a long time, muttering "Where the hell is it?" And why don't they ban the people who actually upload the entire movie and separate it into YouTube videos so you actually end up watching the movie? More importantly, isn't that illegal?

  • I've disputed it with YouTube because as far as I'm aware, posting clips from a movie for a MOVIE REVIEW is fair use under US law. (Or is it? Can someone let me know?) So part 2 is back up now, for how long, I dont know...

  • I believe it is, because copyright infringement laws only are violated if you try to show the entire thing. Clips are *supposed* to be fine. Maybe the clips were tying together nicely and were fairly close together in the movie, and then YouTube thought "Oh, what the hell, let's get 'im for copyright infringement."

Probably not what happened, but it's sort of funny to imagine...

  • Well they totally ignored my fair use appeal and suggestion to put an Amazon link to the DVD so they could buy Paradise (which is a MUCH more sensible option than just killing peopels hard work... and free advertising for their damn film!) and have took part 2 down again. Why part 1 remains is a mystery. I can see all my videos being taken down before long. I hate the way YouTube has gone these last few months.

  • I know, Fox Corporation and Youtube combined... terrible things will be happening. First, they'll take down videos with just clips of the video in it, then they be all, "You are never allowed to mention our movies in YouTube ever again. You hear me, bitches?"

    I can see it now...

Do you have an account on another video sharing website? You should upload your videos there (like backup). From what I've heard, they aren't so bitchy.

And just to complain, they don't take AMVs down! They use clips!

  • SPARTAAAAA

  • anyone who hates this movie is a fat fag who has never been laid and has a small dick

  • ugghh hated this movie. They made the phantom weirder than usual with the silver teeth and robot voice! Keep up with the reviews, love em!

  • LOL at the sped-up POTO bits - disagree that gerard butler had voice enhancement tho, the main reason they chose him was coz he could sing like that (and i doubt he was COMPLETELY untrained anyway, they always have voice coaching for singing in films for months before shooting)

  • 6:17 -- yes, definitely enhanced. Do you think Nicole Kidman sounds even audible if she sang Moulin Rouge songs live?

  • You spike english.

  • oh wow i remember this trippy movie...holy crap i think i was tripping when i saw it

  • This was on over the weekend, I was flipping through the channels and I couldn't stop watching it.

  • I love the sped up and happy music tragic POTO scenes that you did :)

  • I'm stunned at one of your opening statements. I saw this film at a 24 hour film festival and my plan was to catch up on some sleep during this flick but I couldnt it was far too interesting. This is Brian DePalmas masterpiece.

  • Hilarious I really hope your plaining on doing more of these. ^-^

  • im watching it right now :)

  • I Can't do that Hasselhoffhater.

    1:I don't have the equipment.

2:If I did have the equipment I wouldn't know Heads or Tails on how too use it! (& they say I'm the tecno wiz in the family! HA!!!!!! Yea right!!)Anywho...

3:If i did know how to use the equip...(OH WHATEVER!!! I'm not going to write the word again!!!) I DON'T HAVE ANYONE SING THE DUET WITH ME!!!!!!

And 4:I'm only 15!! my parents won't let me!!!! So unfair right?

  • And I can climb a skyscraper using only my lips. I would film it to prove it, but ya know... my camcorder is broken.

  • Thank you Phantom. And to you Legolas try not to be a show off. People will hate you for it.

  • Right Sorry....

  • winslow sounds like darvos or some creature of dr. who

  • Oh, gawd, that Benny Hill sequence totally got me. XD I have to rewatch this since I missed most of what happened after that.

  • Yes...a self confesed, untrained singer CAn hit a note so pure that it sounds like a musical insterment!!! I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE!!!!! You should hear me sing "The Phantom of the Opera" & hit those high notes.

  • Oh really? Then please by all means Legolas show us!

  • lol your hilarious.

  • The reason Swan gives the role to Beef is that Pheonix was "perfect" and Swan says during the audition (after the whole contract signing thing) that he hates perfection in anyone but himself.

  • My favorite song is the one in the opening scene with the Juicy Fruits.

  • OMG this movie looks like a worse acid trip the the guy who MC replaced in the musical of the phantom

  • My goodness, where to even start. First, thank you for the review of Phantom, and for drawing further attention to an amazing gem of the 1970's.

Phantom, for me, and many others, is a staple of our teenage years. I first has the pleasure of seeing this movie when I was about 12.

I'm 45 now, and see this movie with different eyes. It now has a different meaning.

Everytime you see this movie, you'll notice something different.

William Finley does a splendid job, and we all love him!

  • PR do you have a mp3 of Winslow's song? I'd really like it =D

  • Phantom Reviewer, you made a slight error in the movie. According to the script for the movie, all he did was beat the guard - he didn't stab him.

  • You mean at the end when he lands on stage? You're probably right, but its such a crazy scene its hard to tell whats going on.

  • Oh no, I meant the scene earlier in the film. Where Winslow hears his music on the radio while he's working in the factory and he goes insane. He doesn't kill the guard there, he just beats him and then escapes.

  • I dont think I ever said he stabbed or killed him?

  • Around 2:39-2:42 - it sort of sounded as if you had said "he badly stabs the guard and then makes a break for it".

  • Nope, I say "he finally snaps and makes a break for freedom". :)

  • hahah, yes thanks for reviewing this!

  • Fabulous as always. I'm to see the next part now :)

  • XD LOVE the this is sparta

  • Oh, I haven't seen this in forever, but I remember being amused by it. And I was miffed that they cast Gerard Butler in the ALW movie. Come on, there's no shortage of actors who actually can sing, why'd they have to use him?

  • Excellent, Mr. PhantomReviews, Excellent!

I'm so glad that someone has finally decided to review all the great films, featuring our favorite mad disfigured composer, and post them on youtube. I really enjoy your work please keep it up. the Benny Hill song set to Phantom I have to say was genuis.

  • Great review! I've been curious about this movie for a while...but it looks a bit too freaky for me...ANYWAY, thank you for taking your time to review it! I can't wait for the second part!
