  • yes, great acc rivalry, that 98 yard td run by Atkins for the Terps was epic!!!

Too bad Clemson pulled that game out, one of the greatest games ever played in ACC football history

  • The two best ACC Football Programs in the 1980s

  • Jerry Butler was a great player.

  • "The tigers finished 11-1, beating Ohio State in the Gator and ended up ranked 6th nationally"

Wasn't that Gator Bowl the one where Woody Hayes threw his punch?

  • @UsonianAC Yes

  • Too bad they didn't include Steve Atkins' 98 yard TD run. A big play game. Butler had another long TD in that game and Maryland scored on a blocked punt.

Clemson's first good team bought my Charlie Pell. Probation followed a few years later.

  • Clemson-Maryland is probably an under appreciated ACC Rivalry

  • Clemson vs. Maryland is always a great game.

  • @mf12283 It always is when both teams are good.

  • @ErikS1975FreeState Jerry Claiborne Coached Maryland in 1978

  • Not to flame, but wasn't this the year that Penn State and MD were both undefeated going into their matchup?

PSU and MD fans remember that game... :)

  • I miss Jim Phillips.

  • Jerry Butler was an all-time great receiver! He had a very brief but fantastic pro career with the Buffalo Bills. Jerry Rice came along later and was also great , but not as fast as Butler. Jerry Butler would have set all kinds of NFL records had he not been hurt with a knee injury.

  • I maybe a longtime Maryland fan since birth in the early 80's, but I do know my ACC History. Both my Terps and the Tigers were good for a long lime throughout the latter half of the 70's into the 80's winning the bulk of the ACC Titles, and a national championship a piece (Maryland in 1953 and Clemson in '81) even as far back as the beginning of the ACC in the 50's. I still think it is one of the most storied intraconference rivalries in the ACC.

  • Wow... gave me chillbumps to hear Jim Phillips calling Tiger football again after all these years. Great to see Steve Fuller throw that TD pass. Thanks for posting!
