@DrFHead And... (D) Yeah, you're a "scientist"! A "scientist" that didn't know that bodies in orbit were in a state of falling, apparently thinks that rocks possess the ability to fly, and doesn't know what the word "expend" means. Please! An observation: If you are indeed a scientist, you're in the wrong line of work. What in the hell is your degree in? (E) At least you're honest.
@DrFHead Hmmm... Oxford list the definition of "expend" as "to USE UP a resource such as money or energy" (emphasis mine) with its origins from the Latin: "expendere" which means "to pay." Tell me, is it common for you to be able to use the money that you might "pay" to someone, again and again? ...And yes, I'm back. I was out of town for a while and had little time for Youtube. Miss me?
@DrFHead (B) No, I don't. You're the one that keeps coming back to it. It was a comment made for the purposes of clarification. Even though it was an entirely factual one, you can take it or leave it, I don't care. It has no bearing on my argument. (C) Not at all, I was pointing out something in your statement that seemed to be a product of ignorance. (D) I seriously doubt that. (E) Yet, you've thus far been woefully unable to explain exactly how I've done so.
@DrFHead Now... to the listed points: (A) I said it was a by-product of the EXPENDITURE of "all" forms of energy. If the total amount of energy remains constant within a system, then there is no expenditure - no energy has been expended - specifying an expenditure "from the system" would be a needless redundancy. My guess here is that you want to drag this into an absurd argument over nonsensical semantics because you know you're entirely in the wrong on the facts and don't want to admit it.
@DrFHead Yes, the Earth and the Sun are falling. Now, let me get this straight... you're a "scientist", and you don't know that? Honestly??? Don't most people learn that in grade school? As for how "my logic" would dictate that the universe must be falling is a mystery.
@DrFHead ... as has been evidenced multiple times in your previous posts. (C) My injection about rocks was not an argument, it was an illustration. That should have been more than obvious, as I didn't use the analogy to prove or evidence any point, but to illustrate the inanity of your response to me. An illustration is not an argument.
@DrFHead You appear incredibly confused here. (A) I shouldn't have to say "from the system" - if the amount of energy remains constant within a system, then no expenditure has occurred. (B) Who cares if anything is significant or not? You're attacking a non-issue. My reason for bringing that up was merely to point out how scientists often speak for the sake of simplicity. Take it up with them... or is your purpose to attempt to save yourself by dragging this into a discussion of semantics?...
@DrFHead Yeah, except that, none of the things you mention are actually in flight - they're in orbit. They are FALLING, not flying. Falling is what happens when something lacks the ability to fly - I believe most four year-olds have that much figured out. Go and jump off the roof of a building - I guarantee you that the motion you experience as a result of doing so will not be "flight."
You are really grasping at straws here. So the firefly expends a little energy producing the enzyme. Your claim is that the firefly generates heat when it utilizes said enzyme to produce light, which it doesn't... And the laws of thermodynamics really have no application to this discussion.
@WetDogFun So, you disagree with Prof. Branham, then? And, yes, heat is also produced as a direct result of the chemical reaction that produces light - any physicist, and, I hope, any entomologist will tell you the same. And, as for your last sentence: Are you even serious about that? Was that said in jest, or something? The laws of thermodynamics have no application in a discussion of the conversion of useful energy to waste heat? Really???
@WetDogFun Quoting experts in the field is hardly "grasping at straws." Here's another one: "The firefly
luciferase-luciferin reaction is so efficient that 98% of the released energy is in the form of light with very little
heat." - Dr. Kaan Biron, Dept.of Microbiology and Immunology, University of British Columbia - published in BioTeach Online Journal, Vol. 1, Fall 2003. Statement cited: Seliger and McElroy, 1960 & Babu and Kannan,
2002. (Google it!) Just give it up, bud. You're wrong on this.
So, it seems that you actually agree with my original statement, but you take exception to the fact that I omitted some entirely nonsensical and useless specification?!? As in: I'm completely, entirely and utterly wrong about rocks not being able to fly only because I failed to specify that it was only rocks that don't have functioning wings that lack the ability?!?!?
@DrFHead "Actually, conversion to heat energy is a by-product of any IRREVERSIBLE expenditure of ALL forms of energy." fixed." - A system that has undergone a reversible process requires no expenditure of energy to return it to its original state. Your "fixed" statement is incoherent. There's no such thing as a reversible expenditure of energy. It's like if I were to say "There aren't any rocks that can fly." And, you were to correct me saying "There aren't any rocks without wings that can fly!"
@WetDogFun Oh my GOD, man! What? Do you think the laws of thermodynamics are just a bunch of malarkey? Fireflies produce light via a chemical reaction that includes an enzyme known as luciferase. How do you think that enzyme gets into the firefly? Do you think God waves a mystical wand, and it appears by magic? It's produced as a product of the firefly's metabolic processes. Do you think perhaps the firefly might expend a little heat energy in the production of that enzyme?
@WetDogFun If fireflies can produce light without expending any heat, and we understand the chemical reaction that's taking place in the firefly, then why in the hell don't we have free energy on this planet? Can you answer that for me please? Nevermind, I can tell you why: Because it's NONSENSE! That's why. Fireflies convert energy into waste heat in order to make light. Understand? The conversion is REQUIRED. No heat - no light. Get it?
@WetDogFun Quoted from Marc Branham, assistant professor in the department of entomology and nematology at the University of Florida, taken from the Sept. '05 issue of Scientific American, article entitled "How and why do fireflies light up?": "Unlike a light bulb, which produces a lot of heat in addition to light, a firefly's light is cold light, WITHOUT A LOT OF ENERGY BEING LOST AS HEAT." (emphasis mine) Get that? He didn't say "without ANY", he said "WITHOUT A LOT", understand? (Google it)
@DrFHead With regards to (C): Given Youtube's character constraints, when addressing entirely separate points, it often helps with clarity while still maintaining the necessary parsimony of speech.
@DrFHead You do understand that true adiabatic processes don't actually exist, right? That some processes are just so close to being adiabatic that assuming a truly adiabatic model is sufficient to make reasonable calculations. In such models, there is no significant expenditure of energy - the total energy within the system in which the process is occurring remains constant. My point stands: There is ALWAYS - ALWAYS - a conversion to heat energy.
@DrFHead (A) Read my comment again, then tell me if there is any "expenditure of energy" in an adiabatic process. (B) I never call anyone an idiot without cause. Show me where I've called someone an idiot, and I'll show you my cause for doing so - guaranteed.
Actually, no. Entomologists are very interested in fireflies because they use chemiluminescence to create light without heat. Look it up. Many sea creatures do the same. But backing up.... your statement that heat is just light at a lower frequency is incorrect. Mechanical energy will create heat from friction. No light involved.
@WetDogFun "Actually, no. Entomologists are very interested in fireflies because they use chemiluminescence to create light without heat." - All forms of luminescence create heat - the chemiluminescence produced by fireflies is no exception. When you hear entomologists saying that their light produces no heat, they're speaking for simplicity's sake. What they really mean is that such little heat is produced that the amount is practically negligible. But, heat is still produced.
@TheDudlydude Actually, you are incorrect. Heat energy is a by-product of many other forms of energy... light, electrical, mechanical, sound, nuclear.... etc... But not all light will produce heat. For example chemiluminescence in fireflies and many other life forms does not produce heat.
@WetDogFun Actually, conversion to heat energy is a by-product of the any expenditure of ALL forms of energy. And, chemiluminescence - or any other type of luminescence - is no different. It's the law of thermodynamics. Without at least some conversion to heat, there would be no entropy and the laws of thermodynamics would collapse. Chemiluminescence does indeed produce heat - it just produces a very small amount.
