Was listening to Reg13 shortly after i found out Kinglake had gone up ( which i didn't believe or thought was exaggerated) .. so i turned it on and soon found out i was wrong !... first transmission i heard after switching on was the very urgent call for life saving assistance from a unit in Kinglake, they were surrounded by fire and closing in quick, their truck wouldn't start ! .. the voice said everything ..." if we're not rescued immedietly, there's going to be alot of paperwork involved "
After seeing this (and also being in Canberra for 2003 - luckily well out of the way of the fires tho) I'd like to do a huge callout of thanks to all the firies, volunteer or otherwise, for putting their lives at risk for the protection of the community. These situations are bad, but without your help, these situations could have been a lot worse.
@doomkitti The wind was 150KM/h. The fire was so big and strong the fire fighters even with the aircraft support couldn't put it out despite them doing their absolute best.
Be nice if they could retrofit the built in burnover protection nozzles in older tankers. Looks better than sitting under the ROPS trying to hold a fog nozzle.
noone said it was aburnover...they are in crew survival mode...i wouldnt want to be on a truck with your attitude...hey I suppose it was just hot enough to have barbie...Safety first is the way to go

lol agree, black saturday i was out with my buddy on a road surrounded by 5 -10m flame hieghts with a hose, not sitting in a truck watching it go by lol.
if they had drivin away there tiers would of been burnt and then mabey poped and then what happens they would of had to get into burn over mode and make a mayday call
As far as I know, the heat was not so intense that they needed to drop the curtains and that meant they were able to make sure there was no direct flame impacting on the vehicle. (and lucky for CFA TV they were able to film what was happening outside the truck!)

sitting under the rops holding the hose you will use less water than just leaving out with your hand out you can turn it off and on a lot easier

Hey, I live in diamond creek, just near the fire station.

that wasnt a burnover that looks pretty tame
punxmatt 2 years ago
what do you base that on? Have you been to any fires lately?
geoffraus 2 years ago

not really a good option, if the area your in is safe ( burnt ground clearing) you should stay there. Why risk been on the road?
Callumnsc33 1 year ago
that would of been scary as!
samantharox1327 2 years ago
Terrifying.
Are there mechanisms on the truck to measure variables like radiant heat intensity, ambient temp, etc??

A quick question - why didn't they drop the curtains?

@cfavic
Did anyone take any pictures of the outside of the truck after it was safe to do so
Did any plastic melt ?
Did you do a mayday call ?
Are all the crew ok now ?
DyoStoneclaw 1 year ago
@DyoStoneclaw the crew were all ok - don't think there was any serious damage to the truck - the spray system protected it and the crew
cfavic 1 year ago
@cfavic So, it was not a Mayday situation then? I hope they had a full tank when they did that!
NotAJaffa 7 months ago
@cfavic why did they not get under there fire blankets and get below the windows, that what we are supposed to do in the RFS
