This takes me back, what awesome times, I loved when Jim Ross was the face commentator & Jerry Lawler was the heel commentator, Austin vs. McMahon best rivalry ever.
When Steve returned from spinal surgery in 2001 the WWF/E was a different place. Vince chose to elevate HHH and the cRock to make up for the loss of SCSA. Wrestling fans are fickle and didn't cheer for Austin the way they did before he went down for all of 2000. He had to share the spotlight w/ the aforementioned guys and it didn't sit well w/ him one bit.
He came back September of 2000. The Rock's popularity was already surging in 1999 when he turned babyface even comparable to the Stone Cold phenomenon. When Austin left for neck surgery, that's when Rock and HHH really tore it up and helped make WWF profitable despite SCSA's absence. When Austin returned at the Unforgiven PPV, he was actually more popular than ever coz the fans missed him. It was in 2002 when he started to fade coz WWE didn't know how to use his character properly anymore.
@Mr1131988 no he never started to fade the 'what' thing was in full gear...he was just having personal problems with marriage and his ongoing physical pain......put it simpy there would no attitude era without stone cold and who knows where wwf would have gone given that wcw was winning before austins reign
@succeed06 He never faded in popularity, only in status and hierarchy to WWE. He dominated 2001 without a doubt and the next year outta nowhere he's being poorly booked and they're favoring Triple H. He was even the first big name that WWE wanted to job to Brock Lesnar. Thank God he refused! But you're right Stone Cold is the BIGGEST NAME EVER and very much relevant. The 'What?' chants are a testament and his pops are still louder than the top guy now John Cena.
@JulesGunn No he returned in September of 2000 to find who ran him down at Survivor Series 99, He returned to ring in November before Survivor Series 2000 despite having a match with Rikishi at No Mercy that never started because Austin assaulted him before the bell and tried to run him over. He then went on to have a no contest finish vs HHH at SS2000 then won the Royal Rumble 2001 and beat the Rock and turned Heel at Wrestle Mania 17.
@GaDawgs15818 - um, u do realize he wasn't actually run over by a car, right? He was written out for story- telling purposes in order to undergo spinal fusion surgery...
@JulesGunn Of course, I was speaking in terms of the story line. He had to undergo the surgery because of lasting effects from the piledriver from Owen Hart in an Intercontenial Championship match. I was speaking in storyline terms to show that he returned before December like you said he did.
Fully loaded 99 is so underrated. This was the end of the greatest rivalry in wrestling history.
