@truekeanefan: Bruce has said they don't have anywhere near that quantity of "rejected" material for an anniversary edition of The River, which at two LPs was already overstuffed and, despite the somberness of the title track, used a lot of bouncy material (unlike Darkness). I think the period of his compositional superabundance was fading and then more or less ended in the 1980s. He seemed to be using most of what he had in his wiro pad.
Although tucked away in some vault for the past 30 years, this song and the others on the cd are like expensive wines - they get better with aging. God I love these songs...
OK so yesterday I bought my first original CD, as I decided I don't like the illegal copies anymore. And I bought The Promise. I' ve been playing it since I got from the shop...♥♥♥ AMAZING.
This gives me chills every time I hear it. It's just such a huge, Spectorian full-swell ballade, maraca triplets and all (although Phil would have foregrounded the glockenspiel), but with lush Four Seasons harmonies (and a quotation from "Rag Doll") - to us Boomers who two-stepped to the 1960s, this is simply too resonant. And to think that it had been sleeping in some Columbia vault for 30-plus years. Jesus...
Unbelievable how this song wasn't used on "Darkness on the Edge of Town". Just shows you how special Bruce Sprinsgteen is. The man doesn't create a bad song. This is absolutely stunning. I get that sense of listening to music 30 plus years old in an era I didn't get to experience myself, but somehow feel like I am with the release of "The Promise".

Agreed. I heard it in the car and bought the CD on the way home. Hidden for 30 years and worth the wait.

@thelex001 makes you wonder what else is in that vault at columbia or in Jon Landau's basement.

@GClooney17
Hope to have the same we had for Darkness for The River and Born In The USA. There's still many great outtakes for these albums too.
Then for the outtakes of other albums, they could appear on Tracks 2.
