The reason i'm posting is that I work for Comcast and we thought about getting a Union in here and I even came to a vote but it was going to put so many restrictions on us that we voted it down and told them to leave us alone, I make just as much as the IBEW AT&T guys do, well over 20 and hour regular time. Also my wife just got a job at a union shop where they have a choice to be union or not but everyone has to follow the same rules but if you are 1min late you get wrote up what a bunch of bs
My Grand father worked for a union and three months after her retired the plant closed and the union stopped paying out his retiremnet he was owed from 40 years working for them. Unions are driving out jobs and these big companies are moving to other countries, you cant justify to me how someone can make over 30 and hour to set and push buttons all day.
What is surprising....Union Guys just standing around..ready for the next break....Have you guys even read a business book describing the world economy and how the workforce is shifting? If you don't like the way things are start your own company and become a contractor to other companies...

Ask GM how the Union worked for them, it is one of the largest reasons for their demise and for so many people loosing their jobs with them. Go read about it for your self, the union helped the workers for awhile untill it greatly helped push GM's budgets way over along. The employees for the most part fired them selves by joining the union. It is not the only reason for GM's issues but it is one of the largest reasons.

Post the quality of life difference that is being claimed. Jonny in private school now? im just a regular contrator i use to make 90k a year but since we dont have a union they keep cutin our pay and now im down to 50-55k and we pay for every thing i mean every thing so im happy for yall ;(
i work for Comcast $32hr plant tech, and i take my truck home. If i work late i get OT. 401k, tuition reimbursement, employee stock purchase plan, 3 wks paid vacation, 5 personal days, pretty simple and works for me.
Plant techs at verizon make 40 and hour and get double time for woring ot and if they work on a sun they get triple plus 401k FREE tuition not reimbursement profit sharing 6 weeks paid vacation 8 personal days 3 floaters Plus a pension
Outside techs at Verizon make over 30/hr ...ALL OF THEM Id rather commuted to work in my car ands make 30/hr than take the truck home for half that much
No company wants to go union because it cost them more money. If union does happen, you get a small pay raise but have to pay union fees. You may have to work less hours, but driving Co. vehicle home privilege is taken away. I would hate to loose any of my benefits. It's tit-for-tat.
The good news is a union trying to get their foot in the door will usually cause some changes for the better for employees. It's worked great for our service dept. techs.
Time Warner Cable San Diego is going though so much crap. we have two shifts, one is sun-wed, and wed-sat. we all use to meet for our weekly meeting on wed. 3 different times there were talks about getting union by techs. Management seen this as a problems when were ALL together so they now separated us. now the sun-wed has meetings on tues, and wed-sat has theirs on thur. keeping both shifts from talking with one another. low wages, too much work, so little time.
unions can be a positive situation in the work place. You get a clear set of rule, guaranteed wage increase for the term of your contract and job security if bargained for. There is also the negative. a good example is VCS

moved and got a new job in Indiana with Comcast
Non-union system and now I make about 20 dollars and hour and get overtime and shift differential 5% increase per each sift. For me I am happy I dropped the union and now I get all my cable tv and internet service free and only pay half price for my phone service. Plus great health and dental plans.

The union in Chicago pays about 3.oo less starting pay and when you up Tech levels you get no pay increase.
So after a year when someone in a non union area is at 16.00 the union guy doing the same job is at 10.50.
Then you get your annual increase, same as everyone else. Even the guy next to you that spends half his day sleeping in the back of the van.
Thats not my idea of the American Dream. I bust my ass and I want to be compensated. And am.
