  • The put the Turbo against a flat 4? They obviously wanted the Subaru to win.

  • Foresters driver ,drive faster than Honda. So Forester has more momentum. If CRV drive same speed the forester CRV can be. Its a little bit trick. I have to say "I've got a forester"

  • Where is the Reno Logan? I would do as good

  • Ouch! I can almost feel the Forester's oil pan being crushed...

  • Impressive. This is torsen differential job. In many tricky situations torsen system saves a hard job that true off road system will require to shift and work on situations. But torsen won't let it happen first place mostly but once it happened then full off -road system differentials make difference. So who prefers what.

  • I can't believe that some people don’t see what’s going on here. Sub is clearly going nuts cause Crv is selling better. I have already said, in my previous post. Hondas driver STOPS on purpose 1:20 and then hits gas to the floor. However, we, who understand know that is the sound when the car is in "N" or "P" :))) Nice try suby. This hill is way to small for Honda not to climb it up. Do real test and se if CRV gets up there. I know it can, I know i DID, and I know it makes u DESPERATE.Honda rulz

  • @DjeticUsa lol, if you would understand a thing about awd or 4x4 systems, it would be totally clear to you that the subaru awd system is in totally different league than the useless system in cr-v. even hr-v would be better.

  • @DjeticUsa

You write great comments, but don't know how to listen to the video very well. You can clearly hear rocks being thrown when the engine on the Crv revs. You can also see the tires spinning the second time it gets stuck...

The Crv's systems is terrible when it comes to traction control offroad.

Also, you can't tell from the video but the hill is actually fairly steep.

  • 2:13 look at all those Foresters.

  • I traded my CR-V for a Forester. The Honda had decent traction in Florida sugar sand, some rough trails, and good ground clearance but could never go where the Subie can. The AWD in the Subaru distributes power to the wheels with the MOST traction. (not the LEAST traction as said in many privious comments). The Forester also handles better with it's boxer engine's low center of gravity. I loved the CR-V but the Forester is much better!

  • If the Subaru-payed CR-V-driver should have turned the VSA off, he would climb up the hill like shit! But it´s allways the same with these Subaru-comercials!

  • @tompamannen1022

    Agreed.

  • @tompamannen1022

you may want to think that....however...the CR-V is just a front wheel drive "car" with an all-wheel drive system that sends about 20% power to the rear wheels when there is slippage from the front wheels...it's primarily front wheel drive biased....look it up and I'm a Honda fan, but the Forester would kick the CR-V's ass anyday off-roading...Car and Driver did an offroad test of these in Michigan a yr or two ago...look it up and see for yourself...just saying

  • hahah he was poppin vtec....pos

  • Im gonna rend a Forester in Eyget and drive up the great pyramids!

  • а на фига хонда-то на горке приостановилась, конечно забуксует на:)

  • its the difference between real 4x4 and pseudo 4x4 - Honda is just a mirrage of FWD......subaru rules...

  • iono why their showing a honda CR-V. its not an offroad vehicle at all, they just added that feature becuz its an SUV. most people barely use their cars on dirt or uneven terrain anyways. subaru is like sport offroad, but the CR-V isnt.

  • The average 4wd vehicle such as a stock Jeep has a transfer case that can be shifted from 2 to 4 wheel drive. This means that both axles are drive axles. Most factory 4wd vehicles have open differentials and if you loose traction on one side of the vehicle you can be stuck with two wheels spinning. The Subaru AWD system uses limited slip couplers side to side and front to rear. This allows for speed differences between wheels such as for cornering but you get torque to all four wheels always.

  • Get the 2009 Forester and you will be happier. I am

  • Even though I am a Subaru enthusiast, the test was not fair on the Honda, the driver let off the gas. You can CLEARLY hear it. If I was the one who tested, I would NEVER be biased. Heck I can put them BOTH through a test that they can fail! However Subaru DOES have the upper hand here with the aid of brake assist traction control. Works pretty good and is much better than a VLSD in the rear.

  • They are not biased. This is a neutral car test for a magazine. They don't care about either company, although in the past you would think they were paid by honda. Especially the test between the Accord and Legacy or Taurus. Accord always wins, because its the best for its purpose. Here Forester proves that its finally ready for some light offroad. Previous foresters could only dream of this performance offroad, without a trained driver.

  • Honda is the best it is not for just hill type jeep it is a sub jeep and is the best in appearence and motor power ofcourse :P

  • The CRV should have engaged VTAK

  • The forester red, has he reductor? is he diesel?

  • CRV has enough ground clearance on this trail... just awd system isn't good enough on off road, only designed for onroad awd for most drivers... I can't even find the trail like that near city.. I love Forester but where could I take it to>? Near NYC or even in NJs

  • it isnt so easy like you think but subaru is very very good

  • I don't see how any AWD vehicle could get stuck on that. That hill looks terribly fucking easy.

  • honda is 4wd, not awd. And the hill looks easy but it's actually really hard. Some dirt is really thin and slips under tires while other parts are rock and hard ground. It may look easy, but if you drove on it you'd realise it's actually quite difficult

  • no its awd, honda just calls it 4wd

  • they slice and arm off the A making it look like a 4.

i personally have a new forester and an 04 dakota, both great all around. used to have a saturn vue, awd on it was quite bad, found the best way to make it work was to constantly rotate the wheel if i was getting stuck to keep the power moving to different wheels lol

  • Clearly Subaru's symmetrical all wheel drive is the winner when it comes to keeping traction. Nothing can compare to it. It also has more ground clearance than the CRV, 8.9 inches. The CRV got hung up, and couldn't gain a foothold.

  • Forester is just the best car...

  • Hallo to all.I really don't want to say any one is wrong here, but I think that this test was not fer..Pay little bit more attention at 1:20,it is clear that driver on purpose stopped vehicle in up hill position and tried to continue.I drove both vehicles and took it off road and it seams that both are pretty much the same performance..I would also have to agree who ever said that it depends on driver a BIG time.Don't want to criticize anyone, but this up hil,I could make it with my man accord.

  • forester is the best suv.

  • Forester...the Best!!! But It realy is important WHO'S DRIVING! :)

  • This test didnt matter whether it was turbo or NA. Subaru is the best in the Sport Utility Crossover field. RAV4 and CRV cannot compete their AWD system is absolute garbage.

  • The XT that was used in the test.. Auto or Manual ?

  • the xt only comes in auto

  • definately rigged to make the honda look inferior.

  • Ummm, no it just is :)

  • yes it is, even my Ody minivan could have made that!

  • lol to all you who think the crv was the only one that stopped... look at the subie's second go,at about 2:57... the Forester lost its momentum too... but it was able to restart back up unlike the crv... its all in the awd system of Subaru.

  • i have done this test myself on a subaru drive day and driven both vehicles. the honda system is flawed. though he it does look like they gave the forester an unfair advantage. on a similar surface/ hill i drove both cars and the cr-v didnt make it up. but what was more scary is going down. the honda's dirt road anti lock brakes are hopeless. the car just wouldnt stop.

  • this is a tyres matter !!!!! nothing else !!!

  • guaperillas- Your an idiot.

If it was only tyres then a 2wd vehicle with same tyres would make it hey?-

    Idiot!!!!!

  • why does the CRV Stops before the hill ???

  • so the tires have a chance to regain their grip; the crv didn't stop, it lost momentum... but yeah, it probably is a tyre issue. Still, Subaru has one of the best AWD systems around.

  • Yeah..you can't lose momentum if you're pushing the gas all the time (which he didn't)...he did stop because he stopped pushing the gas pedal(I mean it's that steep so that you can lose momentum that easily while pushing gas)...he later tried again..with no grip(forgot to mention that) and no momentum to support the CR-V..of course it's gonna stop and get stuck..

  • He didn't stop the Honda, it stopped on its own. 4WD doesn't mean all 4 powered wheels all the time. 4WD means power only to wheels with least traction. So if one of the Honda wheels went into air, car stops. Subaru uses traction control and LSD to take the power from freewheeling wheel and give it to the wheels with traction. First time for Forester, I think. Outbacks had this AWD system for years.

  • i think you mixed that up. 4wd is all 4 wheels powered, AWD gives power to the wheel with least traction, some companies have finally fixed that giving the power to the wheel with most traction.

  • 4wd and AWD are the same thing and they both power the wheels with the least traction. Its basic physics. I am talking about what 99% of 4wd or awd systems come with. Now, some manufacturers add LSDs, traction control and or axle lockers. I can't explain it any longer, just watch some videos I favored on my channel.

  • Combine that with brake based traction control and you get a system that can power any single wheel even if all others lose traction. Subaru calls it VDC

There is no cut and dry difference other than 4wd is for dirt/mud/snow only where AWD is for all roads, all the time.

Anything else depends on the excact type of system and if lockers/limited slip/ traction control is used.

  • listen dumb shit they r not the same thing AWD have power to all 4 wheels permanently while in 4WD you can select from RWD or when off road select 4WD in either hi or Lo

  • No, monkey you listen. Subaru AWD doesn't need Hi/Low selector anymore. They come with electronic traction control. Honda and other AWDs are trash, and as such are different than a standard 4wd. Subaru AWD and a real 4wd is like, identical in function.

  • Low range in Subaru AWD is achieved by complicated electronics. AWDs are naturally High range 4wd cars.

  • 4wd means locked drive to front and rear. Although if both front and rear diffs are open, power will go to the wheels with least traction. Some form of limited slip/ locking diff or traction control is needed to power *ALL* wheels.

AWD means there is a slip and lock mechannism built into the Front/Rear transfer. Can be a totally unlocked differential(power to least traction wheel, or it can use some type of Limited slip( Subaru manual trans) or hydraulic locking(automatics) for center diff

  • The test only seems biased. I've done several drive events and can tell you that the difference is the standard VDC (Vehicle Dinamics Control) that is standard on the 2009 Forester. In traction challenged situations the VDC system will reduce throttle or apply brakes to the wheels that begin slipping and transfer the power to the wheels that are gripping. Subaru has 33 years experience in AWD, and they pretty much have it down.

  • It does look llike the test was a little bit biased. I'd like to see how the Jeep Patriot fairs, i've got one and its very capable and probably rivals the subaru awd system.

  • they look like they cheated to make the subaru look better and Im not being biased, they looked like they stopped the honda breaking its momentum causing it to have to start on a more steep incline with loose gravel where as the subaru they kept the momentum going so it would never slip! They cheated I bet the honda could make it up!

  • not even a fair comparison with the performance and AWD rally king system on the Forester. I'll like to see it against the Jeep AWD system.

  • My next SUV.

  • Loved it! I just bought a 2009 Forester, but I don't thik I will try this!

  • they are just mad because V-TAAAK's aint so mighty off the road.

Like it or not, Subaru kick's ass.

  • CRV is PAWD and the forester is AWD. This is not a good comparison at all. Also as mentioned before the engine in the forester has a turbo. So much more power and torque. In hill climbs and offroading you need torque. Really tested 4WDs are range rovers, landcruisers, jeeps and pajeros where their FWD systems have been tested in wars, rallies and missions. Serious 4WD cars use diesel engines for the high torque. Tyres also plays a major part for traction as well.

  • Subarus have serious awd systems unlike the rest of the car-based suv's. The CRV,RAV,Highland systems dont transfer nearly enough power away from the spinning wheels and are practically useless in real traction deficient situations as can be seen in this video. Other car-based suvs with good awd systems are Volvo and those of the German marques.

  • This hill climb is about traction, not so much about power. The CRV ganked big time because it's AWD system isn't as good.

  • The npn-turbo did just good. We used both turbo and non turbo models

  • we did and it still works

  • The forester is a turbo version. Try comparing the non-turbo version with the CRV.

  • How about tell Honda to develop better AWD system.

  • How about tell Honda to develop better AWD system.

  • MORON!

  • This forester is a turbo version but is diesel boxer engine, if you know what I mea...!

  • 識貨的用車人並不多!

  • totally agree. But for gas saving, it is another story.

  • Forester Go
