Does anyone know if the jet can take off from vertical and proceed directly into forward flight, or does it have to short takeoff in order to proceed forward. I think the Harrier is able to go straight up and then forward...?
@Judyiack It eventually will, but as of now, no video exists of vertical takeoff, and direct translation to horizontal flight. They're still working on the programming to accomplish that, to the best of my knowledge. You are correct about the Harrier. They're in no hurry to phaze it out, just yet. Gonna be a good while until the F-35 is combat operational.
@jonesy97 I ran across a video that shows the jet taking off vertically and then transitions into horizontal flight but I believe it was computer rendered and if I remember correctly, Lockheed made the video. Still an amazing piece of machinery and technology.
@Judyiack The theory is the "STO" portion of the STOVL definition, i.e. "Short Takeoff..Vertical Landing" as opposed to VTOL, "Vertical takeoff." I too wonder whether that marginal capability is worth the candle, but at least it allows operation from LST-type ships rather than supercarriers. Or so goes the argument.
I believe the new US strategic plan is not really rely on manned fighters. The F22 and F35 are just distractions and diversions to the advancement of UAV fleets. UAVs can out maneuver any pilot
@undertake782 Until Iran, Russia, or China sets up a jamming station that jams the wireless signal to control those signals, they will all fall out of the sky.
@undertake782 Indeed on that part. But what i am talking about is a wireless jamming device. something similar radio jamming, they do not need to disable the aircraft they just need to disrupt the wireless signal of control.
the Russians and the Chinese are the only other countries near stealth, and yet they have so much propaganda about how their stealth is sooo much better, while their unstealthy prototypes are just now starting flight testing. also how are you supposed to shoot down an invisible plane? very useless indeed
couse it has less climb rate, low speed and lesser maneuverability than a simple su-27. it can win nothing if you dont have the air superiority already. so its just a STEALTH SUPORT PLANE. and just that.
@tikiyizi2 F-22 is twin engine, has bigger radar, faster, and is only used on land.
F-35 is single engine, smaller radar, no gun (does have an optional gun pod), and has three variants to choose from. C-model is carrier plane with strong landing gear, tail hook, long folding wings, extra fuel tank behind cockpit. B-model is vertical take off, and has a lift fan behind the cockpit. A-model is air force, and is simpler than the other two.
Well, just to clear the air (no pun intended): F-35B vs. F-22... F-35B has better avionics and a far better engagement system (HMD/HMS) with EOTS. The F-22 kills it in everything else. I'd say that it's a close fight in WVR combat and the Raptor wins in BVR. Those of you who aren't knowledgeable about this stuff (you know who you are) really should pick another argument.
@beroth1 What good is a software, when the hardware is useless? F22 needs a pathetic 30 hour ground maintenance for every 1 hour of flight time, it can only supercruise for a short period of time, it's thrust vectoring is limited to 180 degrees. About the F35... just look at its fat fuselage and its tiny wings.. it can not supercruise for sure, but worse, it can not climb nor turn. Double inferior to the current Russian Sukhoi 35s. and PAK FA is on the way. Lord save the Lockeed Martin!
@684W13 I don't know what you're trying to say. But I do know that you're saying the F-22 and F-35 are useless. Wrong. Russia and China are the only other 5th gen fighter producers, both of which are behind us technologically and in development.
What good is software when hardware is useless? The Russians rely on a strict combination maneuverability and speed to win fights. We rely on technology and very little on speed and maneuverability.
@Weibkoln I don't mean to be rude, but I'm not sure you know what you're talking about. For the last time... The F-35 is a MULTIROLE. It CAN carry 6-8 missiles/bombs. It can't carry rockets.
@beroth1 And yes the thing is said about the landing gear, was dumb to.Still I dont get why people think that this plane is soo good.Like it is better as all the older ones.We only can tell that its better or not, after using it in a *real* war If the enemy shoot PINERUTOL bombs into the air,it is like the fighters fly through paint, and then the fighters are colored, when anti air missiles get attracted by the *paint* that is on the fuselage of the fighter, these fighters fall down like dead birds
@Weibkoln Yet every country with small carriers wants it. Spain, Italy, Thailand, India, US Marine Corps, even Britain. They all use Harriers for now, and the F-35 is the only choice if you want to replace your old, worn out planes. Harriers are not built anymore either.
Even Japan and South Korea have "helicopter" carriers, but a Harrier or F-35 could be used from them.
@beroth1 This F-35 is useless, the USA tested the planes against Russian and Chinese built planes, with as endresult; That the F35 was clubbed like a baby seal. With other words;shot down like WW2 Stuka's
@Weibkoln You write a shit here :) It is noticeable that more and more uncertain, and Spamer the power to make things behauptemn from which they have no idea.
it is a useless plane, a total waste of time and money> why? how many weapons can it carry? what is the service hours on the ground for every one flight hour? what is the cost per copy and maintenance cost of this garbage? can it go supercruise? can it fly twice the speed of sound? can it climb and turn with those tiny wings and that fat body? the truth lies within the answers.
@gregrutz ya but you have to look at what its replacing, the harrier is a great attack aircraft but in this day and age could not dog fight for shit..... Its a step up ether way. except cost..
@gregrutz Ya i hear ya. In the long run though it will prob save money, instead of having 5 training programs, spare parts etc.. for fighter jets, their will be 2 F35 and F22. Guaranteed sales Japan, Australia, U.K, Canada. STVOL sales Italy, Spain, Brazil.
From what i understand Israel wants then too but they will cause trouble with them bombing Iran like they did Iraq which would cause trouble for the west. No sale to Israel.
@gregrutz But ya if we could go back 10-20 years, build the F22 in secret build 50 of them and keep them in secret. The U.S started the arms race when it comes to stealth, if they never showed the F22 to the public then no T50 or J20 rivals. A modified semi stealth F15 could be used for another 20 years. Too late now....
@frizstyler I notice you fail to address the point of my post, and we both know why. Not every invention is successful, but what we learn in the process of each invention is very useful. The f35 is a perfect stepping stone to the true 6th gen fighter. And one of the reasons the f35 is not being pushed so much, is that that fighter is already deep in development, if not flying already, much as the f117 did for a decade before being acknowledged.
@frizstyler Yes like all those stupid NASA programs and other fruits of the "military industrial complex" that resulted in such useless innovations as the internet, silicon chip, practical fuel cells, and so on.
@lasourisaboyante troll is happy? see this youtube.com/watch?v=8kssZua8MVc. just because you characterize this an invention shows how irrelevant you are. youtube is full of you trolls saying random thoughts. give me a SINGLE reason why this project is innovative. all this tech pre-existed, just there wasn't anybody else so stupid to put it together like this
people need to realize since we have these planes in service we are alreadying our next generation aircraft, so that means we probably have combat space craft but until then weclome to the marines F-35 and kick some ass
@rolandtran10 F-18s operate from aircraft carriers. The F-35B will operate from L-class amphibious assault ships with no CATOBAR capabilities. Two completely different aircraft with completely different operating atmospheres.
All the info that is being flooded on Youtube videos about the F-22 and F-35 are nothing more than propaganda. All the soviets can do is fire all their weapons from a far off distance and then run like hell hoping that something hits something other than the ground.
While inefficient yet I do think Vertical Take off and Landing is the future we must head to. Ability to land virtually anywhere, require little space for maintenance and operation. I am not saying these aircraft are good or bad, but I do think VTOL should be improved. For both Land and Sea based aircraft.
@Maverickrad Yeah but you want as much range as you can on a fighter in a combat situation. When the F-35B is acquired by the Marines they will try to takeoff and land conventionaly as much as possible.
Can it do a vertical take off when fully loaded? Or will it be like the harrier where it only landed vertically and took a short take off (as the harrier couldn't provide enough lift to take off vertically when fully laden)
@baldylee100 I think it could probably do a vertical takeoff if they dumped some fuel, I remember watching a Lockheed martin video were a guy was in the simulator and performed VTOL after dumping fuel. Any ways, its not meant for VTOL and its not like they lauch F35B's vertical from destroyers (that'd be awesome though).
The Harrier, informally referred to as the Jump Jet, is a family of British-designed military jet aircraft capable of vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) operations. The Harrier family is the only truly successful design of this type from the many that arose in the 1960s. - Welcome to the club :O)
By IOC the A and C versions will have six internal "medium range" 120Ds with another six possible externally. It's likely that the F-35 will be able to electro-optically lock its target before enemy radar even catches the faintest whiff of it. And how many tens of minutes do you think the entire combined SU fleet will have above mach 1.6? Yes no question it's multirole, but the F-16 has an admirable record being the same type of fighter. Don't forget 3000+ will be built.
For the Yanks: F35 came off the back of the BAe Replica jet design; the UK Defense Ministry was involved from day one in design and cost sharing; GE & Rolls Royce did the alternative engine design (alt to the Pratt and Whitney); and the forward lift fan is all Rolls Royce. A lot of the avionics is BAe.UK Defence is committed to buying these from the outset.
For the Brits: Lets face it, if the yanks weren't providing the lion's share of the money?
good job lockmart. Glad to see the Lightning up and running. Does the F35 land that quickly in VL normally or was it intentional for shakedown purposes?
That pisses all over some old ass harrier jump jet. That plane took a special pilot because it was so friggin dangerous. The F-35 was developed because the F-22 cost so much to build. How many F-35s can we put down for you Mr. Limey?
not bad, but as usual the US is way behind the Brits, who started their program in 1957, but as Winston Churchill said 'You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else'
@totallyclips in terms of? and also, 'You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else' im not sure if thats a good or bad thing lol
it really has very little application to the kind of wars america is in or will be in... it's mostly just a symbol of american military power than anything else...
That rite there is one bad ass bird fer what it's doin fer the "sto's & vl's" Just anuther version of the "Harrier" only "hotrodded" up. I still miss the US NAVY'S F-14 TOMCAT! That rite there is the most bad ass bird of em all!
Imagine a technology thing, everyone is afraid of the U.S. for its military might. Here in Brazil is totally inferior to the first world ago at least 20 years on socially and military technology about 35 years for Americans.
This music reminds me of some Ace Combat 5 songs.

IwAtChViDeOz44 1 month ago
@baldylee100 It can but if it does it puts alot of stress on the lift fan system and use a lot of fuel.

Did anyone notice (on the last landing) how much "side flex" there was with the nose gear
shock strut? Wow! Looks a bit, spindley, shall we say.

@Frst151

I see it's turned into the usual pissing contest!

Does the F35 land that quickly in VL normally or was it intentional for shakedown purposes?
captainofiron 1 month ago
That pisses all over some old ass harrier jump jet. That plane took a special pilot because it was so friggin dangerous. The F-35 was developed because the F-22 cost so much to build. How many F-35s can we put down for you Mr. Limey?
weswaco 1 month ago
@Frst151
Faster then multi role jets that it is replacing.
It carries the traditional battle load inside.
F16 F18 can carry more than that but they loose significant mobile capability if they do so.
F35 can carry more than that but it looses stealth if they do so.
That is of course until we develop stealth shape missiles.

not bad, but as usual the US is way behind the Brits, who started their program in 1957, but as Winston Churchill said 'You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else'

@totallyclips You are fucking retarded.

renanamil100 1 month ago
Imagine a technology thing, everyone is afraid of the U.S. for its military might. Here in Brazil is totally inferior to the first world ago at least 20 years on socially and military technology about 35 years for Americans.
