The reason there seperate men's and women's locker rooms, showers, bath rooms, etc., isn't just because of sexual gender but probably more due to sexual orientation. The Pentagon study confirmed this. Studies into the UK's lift on their ban over a decade ago have also confirmed this. i had a mortarman in afghanistan who was gay. it didn't stop or slow him down from him doing his job, our undermanned mortarmen did a hell of a job and no one gave a shit about his orientation in contact, on a mission, or just hanging around the outpost.

As an honorably discharged vet who served aboard combatants in the USN during the late 80s and early 90s I have always thought dadt was just a dumb policy and I am glad to see it gone. I hope our troops will be judged on conduct alone. As an example, Bradley Manning should be held accountable for releasing classified info not his sexual orientation. This distinction is easy to make.
This policy will have a tremendously negative impact upon the culture of our military forces. To some of you social engineering types, this will probably be a seen as a good thing. Unfortunately, the esprit de corps of our fighting men and women will take a huge hit. We will lose the very thing that makes our military effective. It doesn't make sense to this retire USAF officer and former unit commander.

the only problem with the policy being repealed is that in a survey taken last year, almost 12 percent of the military personnel are skinheads. We already have gays in the military, exemplified by the fact that people are being discharged for it all of the time, and in many cases, it's known by the people around them.
The problem with preventing homosexuals from being dismissed from the armed services is that individuals who ARE CREATING TROUBLE are protected. This is the issue with "protected class" laws today. It doesn't help individuals who are doing their job and contributing. They generally don't need protection. This gives special rights to trouble makers and people who do not contribute as well as breeding resentment.

What this repeal does is simply the gays that are in the military now will no longer have to worry about getting discharged for being gay. @FmrUSMCRnTX Still serving. 14 years and counting. Was in 29 palms for a year at MCCES. Then went to 2/10 out in Lejeune for 3 years. Then went back to 29 palms for a year for my follow on school when I picked up Sgt. Then did I&I duty for 4 years out in NYC. Then went back to Lejeune and did 8 months at Comm Company but got PCA to 3/2 for a deployment. Then went to 10th Marine Regt for 2 years and now I'm in Oki the next 3 years. And so far I did two deployments in Iraq (03 and 06).

Spent 24 yrs in the military and served with all sorts, including gays and I never had any problem with them. My problem with this DADT reversal is next they will want special priviledges such as housing and concurrent assignments, etc. The Gay/Les movement is never going to be satisfied with this crumb they have be given.

As an honorably discharged vet who served aboard combatants in the USN during the late 80s and early 90s I have always thought dadt was just a dumb policy and I am glad to see it gone. I hope our troops will be judged on conduct alone. As an example, Bradley Manning should be held accountable for releasing classified info not his sexual orientation. This distinction is easy to make.

Cohesion, esprit de corps, morale, recruiting, retention, etc will NOT be negatively affected by the repeal of DADT. That's what the Pentagon's study showed, and that's what all other countries (particularly the UK, who repealed their ban a decade ago) have found.

the only problem with the policy being repealed is that in a survey taken last year, almost 12 percent of the military personnel are skinheads. We already have gays in the military, exemplified by the fact that people are being discharged for it all of the time, and in many cases, it's known by the people around them.

The problem with preventing homosexuals from being dismissed from the armed services is that individuals who ARE CREATING TROUBLE are protected. This is the issue with "protected class" laws today. It doesn't help individuals who are doing their job and contributing. They generally don't need protection. This gives special rights to trouble makers and people who do not contribute as well as breeding resentment.

And once America saw how well they were integrated, America followed. This is the same scenario. You know how we Marines do. We adapt and overcome. Nothing gets in the way of us training and winning battles. We don't create policy but you know we enforce them. We'll set the example and watch everyone else follow our lead.

@reminaya Policy is being created by our elected officials. ALL of our elected officials. That means the House and the Senate ALL approved this. Notice how the Dream Act didn't pass despite President O'Bama endorsing it. Majority of Congress approved the repeal as well as the President. Majority wins. This is how our system works. I'm sure white people back in the 1930s and 40s felt the same way as you seeing black people in the military and how the government is going to shit because of it.

What this repeal does is simply the gays that are in the military now will no longer have to worry about getting discharged for being gay. They get to serve their country with no fear of being discharged. That's pretty much the whole point of the repeal.

And no I'm not gay but I am a minority and minorities went through this same shit during the 30s, 40s and 50s. But you leave out the fact that men & women in COMBAT UNITS figured out that shell game and were OVERWHELMINGLY OPPOSED to repealing DADT! In addition, both the USMC Commandant and Army CofS spoke out strongly against this stupidity! Nevertheless, the Odummer Admin and PC members of a lame duck congress pushed for repeal. This will prove to be very detrimental to our military! Aaarrgghh! :(

@FmrUSMCRnTX Still serving. 14 years and counting. Was in 29 palms for a year at MCCES. Then went to 2/10 out in Lejeune for 3 years. Then went back to 29 palms for a year for my follow on school when I picked up Sgt. Then did I&I duty for 4 years out in NYC. Then went back to Lejeune and did 8 months at Comm Company but got PCA to 3/2 for a deployment. Then went to 10th Marine Regt for 2 years and now I'm in Oki the next 3 years. And so far I did two deployments in Iraq (03 and 06).

Spent 24 yrs in the military and served with all sorts, including gays and I never had any problem with them. My problem with this DADT reversal is next they will want special priviledges such as housing and concurrent assignments, etc. The Gay/Les movement is never going to be satisfied with this crumb they have be given.

#2 Issues of sexual advancement will fuel others and resentment will also. So, given the various ways this is going to impact, is it worth it? Is it worth the friction, resentment etc that is now forced on men and women we ask to do the dirty work for our nation? I feel I could currently serve under this situation, others do not. From a former Marine: This issue was handled stupidly and another "jam it America" by the Obama admin. I feel sure I served with gays. It does not bother me. I am sure I worked with gays, it does not bother me. The issue is with the military that may not like being around openly gay people. I do not.
