I UNDERSTAND if people just assume because something is sold out in the open then it must be legal or OK. What I DON'T understand is WHY this is still happening or why pet stores can EASILY sell dogs from the mills. My idea is to have all SOLD puppies come with licenses/papers, and inspectors visiting "puppy suppliers" just as when restaurants are inspected occasionally. If a pet store owner lies abt their supplier there should be a heavy penalty.
I don't understand why people STILL buy puppies (and kittens) from pet stores and the internet. How can they be so tone deaf as to NOT know where these animals come from and the misery they live in? If you get a puppy from a pet shop, you don't have to hassle with fancy schmancy contracts, dogs with "problems" such as barking, or even "ugly" mutt dogs in shelters. That's what my mom did when she begged me to let her buy her Chihuahua, and look at him now. He's cute, but he's hypoglycemic and having horrible seizures! I tried looking up any information about his breeder, but nothing came up.

If the penalty for killing animals was higher it might have some impact. Hell there was a puppy mill in TN where the owner was arrested and after was all said and done he got his mill back but was told to clean it up. I mean come on if all states had huge fines and jail time then it would probably help. The actual states need to make harsher rules.
@matt24d1 I don`t think that changing laws would make any difference. Murder comes with the death penalty in quite a few states, however, that doesn`t deter people from killing. Harsher rules will deter noone. The only way to end these mills is to stop supporting the pet stores which obtain animals from these mills. Educating the public will likely decrease the amount of revenue going into mills. If there is no profit to be made, these millers will cease their actions.
The day the HSUS disconnects from the terrorists of the ALF & PeTA & stops the senseless killing of thousands upon thousands of adoptable pets is when I will support them, until then, I will stick with the ASPCA & local rescues to give support to. DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM PET STORES! These are their parents. My rescued yorkie Zinga had no lower mandible. Wanna know why? Millers to debark the dogs put a pole in the dogs throat and use a hammer to smash the vocal cords often shattering the jaws. Little Zinga was 2.8 pounds rescued at 10 years of age at 1.2 pounds. Lived til he was 15 loved shredded cheese on his homemade doggie food! He was one of the lucky ones that died knowing love...for most it is not the case.

A big concern now-a-days since we have the internet are places like Kijiji. You really gotta see the parents and make sure whoever is selling the pups, meets you at a respectable place (their home, NOT a coffee shop or something silly like that). If the seller sounds sketch, DON'T BUY THE PUPPY!!!
@KripDrip The whole point is stop buying from pet stores to eventually stop the whole thing in general. Many pet stores are corrupt and are getting shut down because of it. It wasn't always an issue and has gotten so bad over the past few years. Boycott pet stores and puppy mills.

My dog is from a pet store (which I assume means he is from a puppy mill). The original owners told me they bought him at a pet store ( out of ignorance). The old owners lost their home and I rescued the dog when they had no where to take him, I didn't pay a cent for him. Even though I love my dog very much, I still think this is a sick a cruel practice, it boggles my mind how it can even be legal!
Dogs are nothing more than commodities to people who run puppy mills. It's a huge industry worth a lot of money. Laws are so lax on the people that own the mills. There aren't resources to regulate mills properly. So ask yourself what are 'good' conditions for puppy breeding? A dog would cost 5 grand. There is simply no way to get rid of these mills other than to have a law that mass breeding of dogs for sale is illegal. As long as price is involved you will always have people cutting corners.

I had no idea of the conditions... I've heard not to buy pet store dogs and now I know why. Plus there are so many to be rescued, why go to a pet store? The only way to stop this is to boycott buying at the stores that sell these animals. People will do anything to make a buck but we can take the profit out of it by refusing to buy at pet stores

There are also rescues that specialize in rescueing certain breeds. And because of these $#%^ and having to clean up the mess they make there are plenty in shelters.

DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM PET STORES! These are their parents. My rescued yorkie Zinga had no lower mandible. Wanna know why? Millers to debark the dogs put a pole in the dogs throat and use a hammer to smash the vocal cords often shattering the jaws. Little Zinga was 2.8 pounds rescued at 10 years of age at 1.2 pounds. Lived til he was 15 loved shredded cheese on his homemade doggie food! He was one of the lucky ones that died knowing love...for most it is not the case.

@mzk123ify: I'm really glad to hear you rescued a dog! That's great! I applaud you. I realized that its not only PET STORES that sell puppies from Puppy mills. A big concern now-a-days since we have the internet are places like Kijiji. You really gotta see the parents and make sure whoever is selling the pups, meets you at a respectable place (their home, NOT a coffee shop or something silly like that). If the seller sounds sketch, DON'T BUY THE PUPPY!!!

@KripDrip The whole point is stop buying from pet stores to eventually stop the whole thing in general. Many pet stores are corrupt and are getting shut down because of it. It wasn't always an issue and has gotten so bad over the past few years. Boycott pet stores and puppy mills.

@KripDrip The dogs are sent back to the mill and the mill owners arrange for them to be rescued because they no longer have use for the dog. It's better to stop purchasing from pet stores and the internet, find a reputable breeder or go to the shelter.

How could someone do this to another being? I'm rescuing a dog that was fed by a automatic feeder and watering system. Lucy from Pointer Rescue didn't even have human contact for 5-6 years. These puppy mill owners should be shoved in the same cage they use and left there to rot.

I wish I knew ways of helping out in the fight against puppy mills. This is sick.
My dog is from a pet store (which I assume means he is from a puppy mill). The original owners told me they bought him at a pet store ( out of ignorance). The old owners lost their home and I rescued the dog when they had no where to take him, I didn't pay a cent for him. Even though I love my dog very much, I still think this is a sick a cruel practice, it boggles my mind how it can even be legal!

Dogs are nothing more than commodities to people who run puppy mills. It's a huge industry worth a lot of money. Laws are so lax on the people that own the mills. There aren't resources to regulate mills properly. So ask yourself what are 'good' conditions for puppy breeding? A dog would cost 5 grand. There is simply no way to get rid of these mills other than to have a law that mass breeding of dogs for sale is illegal. As long as price is involved you will always have people cutting corners.

Another ? for doubters--Why does this bill leave out unlicensed breeders and hunting dogs? I have seen hunting dogs in horrid conditions! I had no idea of the conditions... I've heard not to buy pet store dogs and now I know why. Plus there are so many to be rescued, why go to a pet store? The only way to stop this is to boycott buying at the stores that sell these animals. People will do anything to make a buck but we can take the profit out of it by refusing to buy at pet stores

Puppy mills can continue but with good conditions. With food water medical attention and excersice . But most importantly human affection. This is just cruel. I was about to think of buying a puppy at a pet shop. But now i am going to adopt one instead

Now normally I'm disgusted and shock at the cruelty that can go on, whether it be chickens, animals with fur, water-supplies, people of Nigeria, etc, but there it's always the fact that the greedy heartless bastards can easily get away with it, keeping it hidden.
I somehow imagined puppies to be a completely different matter, that you couldn't be cruel to them, because it would be too easily exposed.
I guess they simply find ways to squeeze every cent possible no matter what "the product".
