I live in West Frankfort, and we also got shit on. Biggest tree around, down.. Almost on my little bitty house. Water was up to my ass, and I'm 6 feet tall..
Well we all now know that the official word for the storm is Derecho... Spanish for Straight (as in straight line winds). There were funnel clouds spotted in this storm and at least one is believed to have touched down. So long and good riddance 2009!
I lived in Sparta when it happen and my wife went with a friend to carbondale. I was watching the radar when it just missed us and they were about to head home. It was a good thing i was watching the radar because they were going to come back and I told them to stay. They were at arby's in a freezer when it hit. They could have been in their car
Inland huricane? WTF? I'd say if funnels WHERE Seen during the day. Quite possible was Straight Line Winds or a Microburst. Depends I guess if it covered a large span of area.. could have been a tornado not on ground-- yet was able to whip out the Tornadic winds to cause damage.. and possibly some suction as well. But I'm no Reed Timmer ^.-
Wow, I live in Carbondale, IL. I can't believe a storm like that could cause so much damage. The power was out at my apartment building for 5 days. Believe me, it was no picnic.
lol funny story, the first round of storms that hit us before that, after that first line, i drove to my friends and told him it wasn't over and he thought i was crazy, an hour later im in my sun room watching trees and everything else just fall....he beleaved me after that...but it wasnt all bad, it brought a lot of people together and close as a community and plus nothing to do but party.....but the bad part it messed a lot of peoples shit up...that i am really sorry for.
A tree crushed my mothers car's hood and we saw a trash can come flying down the street. we were at giant city stables and we were getting hemmed in by trees on our way home, a power line nearly hit our car and it was freaky.
I have some HD footage, I will be posting it soon.
i was outside at the begging of this. me and my friends watched a transformer explode in front of our dorm. next thing we know, every tree in front of university hall was down. we watched every tree around us fall. that was the craziest 2 days of my life. i moved out that day, and we ran out of gas, so i spent the night in a gas station right by the Miners baseball field in my car. then waited forever in a long ass line to get gas in the morning. craziest 2 days of my life fersure
By far one of the most weirdest day of my life. In the morning sunny and clear in the afternoon all hell is breaking loose and next thing you know teachers and kids are saying the town is a mess and they wont let us leave. The power crews did a great job on restoring the power and the city also did a really great job on getting the town cleaned up as fast as they did.. Its back to normal but but you still see storm damage here and there.
If it had gone the other way, their pool and house would've been gone. I cant even explain my fear that day. worst day ever. going thru a storm right now. not a bad one, but lots of thunders and rain. real dark. that was the worst storm EVER!!! WITHOUT POWER FOR OVER A WEEK!!! All of you who werent in the storm, you are lucky!!!
I'm not even in Junior High, and my sister, 17, was supposed to be at school all day. I HAD A HALF DAY!!! We were in the hallway like 1 hour, then they sent us home in the eye. I WAS GONNA BE HOME ALONE!!! But my dad knew what was coming so he came home before I did. Tons of trees down. One of them landed on my neighbors new house. They had just moved there recently. I felt. My BFF lives down the road form me. She has TONS of trees. At least 30. None on the house. One RIGHT NEXT TO THEIR POOL!
yeah my uncle and them was in it they lost power for like a week they said it was really bad they bought them a trampoline like 2 months before that and when the storm hit it blew up into a tree now they dont have it they also lost their really old willow tree...
This was really a crazy day.. For some reason I woke up that morning and looked at my phone friends had told me it was getting bad so I got my things together and headed to the basement. Glad I got there...didnt have much damage but Southern IL. looks so much different now don't ya think... so much missing.
I was at home listening to the wolves howl also..I was watching the trees start to bend..My home began to make loud popping and cracking sounds.I thought for sure my windows would blow out..hihihihi!
Great pics! This was a truly unusual storm, and people are STILL fighting over what to call it - I've heard inland hurricane, derecho, meso-cyclone, etc...I really don't care what its technically called, I think inland hurricane describes the feel of it, and its the first name I heard, so I'm going with it! One of the best names I heard on the radio was "Hurricane Blago" lol. My 10 year old daughter named it "Cinco de Darko" because we were out of power for a full 5 days!
Thanks for posting this. I have never seen anything like it and I have been in two tornadoes in my life. The clouds were so very strange and un-tornado-like.
I'm in Marion, and we had a tree uproot and land SPLAT on our house! I had heard that some folks here have named this hurricane: Hurricane WTF?!?! Hey, I vote for that name!
Ahh..I'm soo sorry to hear about your home..Has the insurance company caught up to you all yet?Are you still staying in your home? They are calling for some more storms with winds..It will be storming on and off for the next three days! I hope your home is covered well. Oh..and as far as the name you they got my vote!! You and your family take care ...Best of luck to you all!! :D
Yup, we're staying in this lovely tarped home until we can get a contractor to repair it. Heck, we can't even get a BID right now, everyone is so busy. The adjuster came yesterday with the weak initial offer. Pah, I say! I haven't reviewed all the videos on here, but I'll bet my bottom dollar that my house is on here somewhere...by the Marion ballfields. I should get royalties. ;-)
Ahh..so ya don't say! Hum..If you happen to see someone driving by your house taking picture..It maybe Me! LOL! Good -luck with the bad weather in the next few days! :D
I was at work in Herrin when the storm hit. You can see my apartment building in the back of one of the pictures in this video in fact. We just got power back on a few hours ago. This has been such a mess...but it could have been much worse.
Hey dollface! I'm happy to hear your power is now restored.Looks like things are starting to look up! And your right it could have been alot worse..Thank God it was'nt! That was some wicked storm. We are now looking forward to more storms on the way..With some wind Gust. The ground is already very wet..and many damaged tree's still standing..I hope through the winds they remain standing.Keep your fingers crossed! Take care and Thanks for watch'in!
Southwest Missouri got hit by the same system earlier that day. They were calling it a "derecho" -- a unique storm system that has sustained hurricane-force straight-line winds. It's enough to uproot trees and snap utility poles like regular hurricanes.

Indeed, I live in Missouri. Currently, I'm in Kansas City, but I have lived in Southwest MO for around 4 years. As far as I know, these aren't run-of-the-mill storms.
Yeah I know ..tree's tree's and more tree's!! Enough fire wood to last southern Illinois a lifetime..The tree trimmer's will be worki'n on this storm damage for a good while.Carbondale really got hit! :D Thanks for watch'in!
Hey James..Where are you at now? Oh and Nasty is a very good word to use for this storm. I hope you dont ever see a storm like this..The best thing to do is always prepare for the worst..And stay ahead of the game. My heart really goes out to those who have lossed their homes and such Thanks for watch'in you Silly Willy! :D.
Than you know of the damage and how wide spread it is ..I know this vid does not even touch it...my batteries in my camera went died!! err! Marion and Carbondale Really took a blow! Have you been to see the damage there yet? Nathon ..I hope you and your family are doing O.K. You take Care. Thanks for watch'in :D
FEMA is here (Scarier than everything else) They are rationing gas and watching people wait for up to 2 hours to get into the grocery store. My mom called me from her car as the storm hit and thought she was going to die...not upset, just thought it was the end....

Hiya! I am doing fine dear! Believe it or not..I was left un-touched. And never lost power.. So i am feeling very blessed..I must say! I feel for those who have lost power ,homes, car and everything else. And I am sure to them it does seem like a trillion years. We really do take a lot for granted..until its no longer there..dont we?I'm glad to know that you all are doing better.
lol this is a rocking video and the best coverage I have seen on the web and love the tune, I grew up in this area I live in Las vegas now and have for 26years but the 18 years I lived in southern IL I never saw a storm like that ,that wasn't a tornado, you gave this great coverage and might want to do this in the future excelent coverage and hope eveone is well have they given you power back yet??
You're a Sweetie! Thanks for your comments. I wish I could have got some more pic's of the damage..because there is tons more..this is just a small taste. Can you believe I headed out to take pic's and forgot to charge my battery!! hihihihi!Btw..What part of Southern Illinois did you live in?
Hiya sunshine! I was one of the few that never lost power. The power is being restored ..but slowly.Thousands still without. They are hoping to have everyone up and running by the end of the week.I hope it for everyone! :D Thanks for watch'in Dearheart!
Hey Ruru, I saw on the news where you had some pretty serious straight-line winds, and alot of damage was done. Been in this weather pattern before, and it ain't no fun. THANKS FOR SHARING, C.W.
Hiya C.W.! I've seen some pretty serious thunderstorms and such. But this thing was a little creepy! Really strong winds! Thanks for Stoppin by C.W. (Hugs) !
Yes I agree! Have you had power the whole time..or did you just get it restored today? I have a brother that lives in Herrin. He is still without power. He went to go try to buy a generator today..I'm not sure if he found one or not.
Funnel clouds?! Now that is scary!! And you must be really blessed.. It's great to know that you and your family are safe. There you have hurricanes. Here we have typhoons.
I was trying to maintain the black & white motif of my page that's why I disabled the comments but really want it back. LOL Guess it's about time to change the theme of my page. Wait, that will take a while Ruru, my friend. Haha.. =) It's great to hear from you again.. As always.
And Blessed I am! I live in the state of Illinois. We have never heard of anything such as a "Inland Hurricane" at least not here. This is something new to us.But we see our fare share of tornado's and storms.Typhoons that is nothing I want a part of. Yike's! Btw where is here? You never told me where you live. The Black and White theme is pretty cool. But I believe its about time you added a little color into your life..So I can leave a comment on your page...Hehehe! No pressure here! *winks*
I live in the Philippines which is a tropical country. There's basically 2 seasons here. Wet & dry. LOL
Yeah, I'm really thinking of changing the theme of my page so that I could put back the comments section. I was feeling it (the theme) then but now I think I need to let in some colors. =)
Damn..your right ! That is a big gap!! LOL! Oh well this is a good thing for me ..it will appear that my comment page is fuller..Oh..and I must say don't go to crazy with the page..I think it could be a bit creepy to see Rainbows and such..ya know?
That a boy! I will be watching to see what kind of theme you come up with! I say Reds, blues, pinks, purples, yellows Splashed all over..Something Funky...Funky! Go Wild Mikey!
An inland hurricane? What on earth is that if it's not a tornado? So, if a tornado doesn't touch down it's called an inland hurricane? I wonder how much worse it would have been if it HAD touched down! The music, btw, seemed appropriate to the occasion....
Hiya Jack! The damage is much greater than this....My battery in my camera went dead before I got the chance to take the pic's I really wanted. And what ever they want to call it..I can go the rest of my life without seeing another one. I'm glad you liked the music I picked Jack! LOL! :D Thanks for watch'in!
Absolutely crazy. I've been talking to my family and friends, and it sounds like they're screwed for a few days. Thanks for putting some video up...been wondering what the damage looked like.
I went to SIU and that hurricane sucked!

I'd say psychedelic than rainbow brite-ish! LOL =)
Don't worry I won't go for overkill. =)
