I've always wondered why endurance was such a factor especially on fx. Dont these girls train for 5-6 hours a day.... I mean they must be doing full routines or conditioning. I just dont see how that wouldnt build them enough endurance to do just one in competition.
@paiges38 Its always been a well known fact about Sveta that she does not do the numbers most gymnasts do. It is very hard on her body so she usually keeps repetition to am minimum. I think that's why she wore out so fast. Plus there is no "slow" time in this routine...its pretty much all go.
Because that's what compulsory is, a format in which all gymnasts must execute the same move, sort of like taking a driver's test. Figure skating used to have compulsory as well where all skaters must trace the same figure on the ice. Compulsories was removed from figure skating in 1990-91 and gymnastic after the 1996 Olympics.
can someone help me? i followed the 96 games but never knew much about compulsories. why did the US team not perform the split jump after the full twist in the first pass? i saw just about every other team except the US. Was that an optional move?
" i saw just about every other team except the US. Was that an optional move?" There were some parts of the compulsory routines that could be changed. I think the routine only called for a rebound after the full twist but other teams decided to do a split jump out of it. Memory is fuzzy though so I could be wrong.
You're correct, tcseeme. The routine only called for a rebound. Some gymnasts performed a split leap and it just caught on. Pretty much all but the Americans and Canadians performed the split jump.
Teams were allowed to styalize their routines, meaning they could add something or extend out a move to make it more special, the American Beam work was one of the best in the stylyzing department, take at look at Moceanu's routine on Beam and compare it to any of the Russian girls, or take the Chinese women's beam work and compare it to the Romanian's and you'll see what I mean.
is it just me or does she seem to be ahead of the music every now and then..?

what an ugly last tumbling pass! very poor technique.

Her tumbling is so small. I am pretty sure that is why her score was low.

Elle est vraiment grâcieuse, et ses mouvements allaient parfaitement bien avec sa musique.

Her tumbling is so tiny. She really improved as a gymnast after 96.

@beckerbombs this was just compulsory, watch optionals to see her full potenzial at 1996!

Oooo... LOVE her front aerial-ro-split leap-back extension combo! It's very fluid and graceful... probably the best I've seen from this comp.

Wow, she was definetly tired towards the end of this routine.

compulsories seem like cruel thing to such a unique gymnast like Sveta.. she would never out this type of routine together for herself!
