  • @irvineharley Rhode Island.

  • Now thats sweet, all the blues greats just sittin around jamming.

  • Dude has most haunting voice of all time. Was also a good pianist, in fact he started on piano, stride stuff.

  • You can see Howlin' Wolf wishing he was this good....

  • absolutely, priceless

  • I love how Skip ends the predictable second verse with a blank vocal and a syncopated note. Just incredible,

  • Its Howlin' Wolf on the right, on second camera point of view....???

  • @ianferr5 yeh i thought this to im pretty certain

  • damn skippin', skip!

  • I love it.

  • The realest, ever...

  • this is blues. long live skip james & long live alan christie wilson

  • so many Greats in that room

  • That has got to be the Wolf on the right hand side, leaning over the chair?

  • @AndrewHozier Yeah, that's the Wolf. I saw this at a theatre some years ago as part of a blues festival. If you can find the DVD, it's fascinating when Wolf admonishes Son House for basically being a drunken idiot.

  • @AndrewHozier yep,he is there in all theese videos listening,two legends :)

  • I would kill if I could be in that room.

  • Skip James,Son House, and of course the god father in my book Leadbelly are the three best in my book and if not for them that garbage they call country music would never be. White man seems to be very unoriginal.I am a rag myself.Indian if you do not know what that means.....LOL...

  • hey

see my videos and my chanel

you will like my TAStes of music ahh haan e e eh

  • like seeing real live history

  • Id be nervous and scared as shit to play guitar with Wolf standing right there looking at me!

  • @kikster93 not if you were skip james

  • @kikster93 not if you were skip james ;)

  • Yep - It's one thing to hear this stuff, but to SEE how he plays it is invaluable.

    Thanks, Coldyron.

  • Next to Skip ar H.Wolf and Son House

  • a real guitar hero...the amazing picking...and his use of harmonics is crazy!!!! I love his style

  • sharing something good

  • Awesome............

  • i love that skip is in a room with all these other blues greats who are just as much in awe of this as i am.

  • one of the most haunting voices i've ever heard, -

i first heard him on npr, and have been hooked ever since

  • Guys: Is this the same session with Howlin' Wolf? I think it is. You can see his hulking mass in the foreground just dying to get the stage in a couple of shots.

  • you are correct sir the big mofo is Chester Burnett

  • someone please post "im so glad" from the same session again. sweetest version ive ever heard. shame it was removed.

  • I posted it two weeks ago, with very good quality. Check my profile. Enjoy!

  • THANK YOU SIR!

  • Skip, my suitcase is fat and down the road

  • so amazing

  • most playful man!!!!!

  • a care package

    from heaven

    amen

  • I keep hoping that some unknown footage of Mr. James will surface someday. It is a real shame that we are so limited on the live footage we have of him. The guy was a real genius and one of the blues greats.

  • very well said

  • He was fighting cancer when this was shot; it's a shame it took him a short couple years later.

  • Anyone know the tuning he was using??

    Amazing stuff....

    Thanks

  • Pretty sure it's standard.

  • @ButtoMcFarty

He often uses D-minor tuning which is:

    D

    A

    D

    F

    A

    D

  • Howlin Wolf, Bukka White... everybody was amazed by Skip. :-)

  • yeah its pretty cool watching everybodys reaction to mr skip james playing im so glad

  • it's from a great DVD, buy it .....

  • Just love ole Skip

  • dem blues

  • Always there, man...

  • Just plain talented - blues at its very best. Wayne

  • I'm so glad you mentioned that. It's great to take a second and appreciate this amazing opportunity. And I want to give props for the rest of the people on this thread, for knowing and savoring the fact that apparently there's three (three!) bona fide blues masters in real time before our very eyes. That's Howlin Wolf, on the right, no?

    Cheers!

  • Yes, it's Howlin Wolf. v=JUMxotT6DUs

He performed there with Hubert Sumlin and Willie Dixon.

  • This isn't specific to this clip, but do you realize how incredible is the internet that we can access all of this so easily? Pre-internet, you could have searched your whole life for this and Killin' Floor and Sonny Terry and all the known greats. Thanks so much for posting this!

  • And the quality, too! You'd have a damn hard time finding anything in this completion and quality.

  • Yeah totally dude...it's amazing, i would of never heard some of the wonderful things i've heard if it wasn't for the internet

and if you love music then.........Yeeee haaaa lol

    peace out dude(ette)

  • yeah i agree its a brave new world.

everythings changed but then again nothings changed, people will always have the blues

  • Very well said! Hope you don't mind if I quote that (I'm a writer).

  • no of course not (i want a credit though!) lol only kidding, what do you write? im a writer of sorts myself

  • ...right. I remember trading grainy, wobbly VHS tapes, or having to be content with seeing clips of these guys on documentaries. Youtube images of Skip and John Hurt have been the greatest thrill for me.

  • Seriously! I'll never forget how much more musically frustrated I was before the internet.

  • @zubernick we are truly some luckly bastards

  • @zubernick I agree, its amazing how much the internet has connected the world of information and media. Sharing is the way to improve and balance this world.

  • @zubernick

i completely agree with your statement about the possibilities of the Internet

  • @zubernick Great point. The internet has its positives and negatives, but keeping music like this alive is truly a positive.

  • @zubernick had to like this, i thought this exact same thing and was going to write the same comment

  • @zubernick ... i remember watching the Crow Jane video of Skip James only a few years back for the first time and it blew my head apart, didn't know footage of him was around then and have been into his music since my teens. you're right, its incredible! ... very grateful here.

  • Wow, this man is outta control!!!

    or unnaturally IN control!

Skip has secured him a place at the very top of blues......

  • youtube has provided some really cool footage I would not have seen otherwise. thanks for posting, you alright!

  • Wow, this is a different version than on the track I have. Lyrics are in a different order., and a lot of different verses. Pretty cool.

  • realnicce.

    <3

  • I love Skip James, hes my favorite blues artist! His music will live forever:) RIP man.

  • This tells me why some blues sangers had sooooooooooo many children. [smile]

  • ooo i wish i was there

  • wow!!!!!!!!!!

wolf and son house on this clip 3 blues legends in one place

  • Mississippi John Hurt is standing behind Skip against the wall. That makes three blues legends besides Skip James.

  • Hey Shark, you know where I can find some of James' recordings? He's my all-time favorite bluesman. I always thought he was one of the best tune carriers.

  • Never mind... I just found the tower records collection. Thanks anyhow :)

  • skip, ilumíname.

  • This guy is good as Robert Johnson

  • one man, one guitar, what else?

  • not very many artists who can do that anymore huh

  • almost makes me cry to listen to how good he is

  • i love skip

  • Just enjoy the blues man!

  • Are you going to post this on all of his videos?

  • Ha look at Howlin Wolf there, he's a beast. They are all legends.

  • hahaha i know, Howlin Wolf is like a freakin oak tree, what a legend

  • phenomenal. warms my heart to see him play. thanks so much for this video. like bluesborn said, water straight from the well.

  • im only just beginning to learn of skip james now:) lovin him already

  • Notice Howlin' Wolf leaning on the piano in the foreground!

  • The man standing in the back could tell a story or two I bet.

  • Yep, that's Mississippi John Hurt. Sho nuff.

  • You obviously don't know what MSJH looks like because thats 100% postively not him!

  • right there at 3:20 when they show his face that really doesn't look like MSJH, maybe its just the profile veiw, but I still dont think it is.

  • Hmmm, that's a toss-up. I didn't see the close up of his face at first. I agree it doesn't look exactly like him. But from the front he looks just like MJH with his fedora and suit. I know there's a video of him somewhere leaning on a rail like that at the Newport festival. Whoever that guy is, it ain't gonna matter a whole lot if I figure it out for sure, so I'll let it rest.

  • MSJH just does NOT have a sharp jaw line that that guy does, and different nose, and facial expression.

Only since you say its not, i'm going to say now it's 99% not him. Just because you know members of his family doesn't mean that gives you the ability to distinguish who is who.

It look more like some random dude watching some music.

Thats not mississippi johnt hurt bro, pause the image and stare at it.

    No fucking way.

  • personally i think:

    'who fucking cares?'

  • its not mississippi john behind him, it looks more like hound dog taylor although its neither of them, i dont know who it is.. but its most definitely not him. i dont care if you know his family or not, which you most likely dont, but non the less, you can see in the video a soul of a man where they give him a close up, you can see its not Mississippi john, you can check credits and found out who it is if you want, but its not him.

  • He looks more like Mance Lipscomb to me...

  • skip them blues, man! tell them like it is!

wish the world to clean their ears to learn these fantastic gifts to our souls.

    Long live the blues!

  • what can you say the man is a legend

  • water straight from the well.

  • a farewell gathering?? To show their honor and respect for a mentor. Each a legend in their own style but without envy of a brother. Only support, friendship and love shown. Wish we still had those qualities in the music business..........

  • it's heartbreaking,.....but amazing....thanks.

  • wolf, and son House & son House +hubert Sumlin near the kind of pannel . Skip was very ill & almost able to play his guitar. this vid is a kind of miracle. One of the best of Youtube. Thanks

  • the quality of this clip, especially since its 40 years old, is killer. props to the the guys who aired this on the internet - and much, much love to those who took the time to preserve these songs on film. anyone know who took this footage?

  • Nehemiah "Skip" James, Born: Jun. 9/1902 Bentonia MS -

Died: Oct.3/1969 Philadelphia PA. Big influence to Robert "Dust my Broom" Johnson.

  • the big guy in the forground is "Hallen Woof" ?

  • Hallen Woof??

  • its howlin wolf.. another sweet blues man but not nearly as old as skip james

  • "howlin wolf.. another sweet blues man but not nearly as old as skip james" Howlin' Wolf was 8 years younger than Skip James.

  • i have this DVD... it's amazing... I bought it at my local guitar shop

  • brilliant...

  • Not enough stars to rate Skip.....
