Turn the traction assist OFF if you intend to spin the tires on ice or any surface for that matter. That's why they put the switch there.

Clearly this dolt doesn't know the difference between performance tires and all-seasons. You can't drive on ice and snow with performance tires on, which clearly he had equipped. Us Northerners are dumbstruck and amazed every time the South gets a wee bit of snow how everyone turns into Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb. Seriously people, it isn't that hard to figure out.

I'm rocking Continental ContiContact Extreme DWS on low profile 18 inches on BBS wheel on my 1998 Volvo C70 and have driven everyday this week in the snow and ice in Atlanta - passed a neighbors stuck SUV. I don't think you can tell from that video what type of tires that guy has mounted.
@swedishiron I have the same tires on my Cooper S. Not as good as the Sumitomo all-seasons I once had, but they do the job adequately. Surely good enough to handle that snow in Atlanta. Yeah, you can't tell what tires the guy had on, but since it is Atlanta, he most likely has performance tires on since that is usually par for the course on performance vehicles down South. Either that or his tires were past the tread life needed to handle that weather.

@delta324 actually the heat from the tires will melt the ice right under the tires so that part was spinning on the cement, BUT there is an ice lip to climb & the idiot just didn't think it thru...ps transplanted southner who lives in the frozen north....wonder if his insurance co. will see this?

The driver is a moron because he couldn't understand that ice-coated roads = no traction. He kept applying throttle until the engine blew and the car caught fire.
The reporter is a moron because he claimed the rear tires overheated (because of the spinning) and then caught fire. BUT, the fire started at the front of car. Flames never appeared at the rear of the car.
That man does not deserve another BMW. It's common sense that if your wheels are spinning then you aren't going anywhere, so flooring it isn't going to help. And then when he said that he thought he "just busted a hose or something," I guess it seems completely logical to just keep hammering on it.
