@UpstairsMaid I trust you do understand the inherent problem of "outlawing hate speech"? For those who don't, the problem entirely lies in defining what constitutes "hate". In years past, prominent Canadians like Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant have been accused of spewing hate speech. Of course they weren't. The prosecution was merely a tool instigated by their detractors to silence them.
Thankfully the Conservative gov't seems set to remove this dangerous legislation!
@vancouver57 the human rights commission is out of control. the criminal code section is however very clear. the hate speech must promote genocide to be an offense.

Neither were promoting genocide yet both had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend themselves. Furthermore, if they weren't each major media figures with access to the bully pulpit, they would have been absolutely been convicted ... like everyone else before them was.

People with double standards who think their own ideas must be protected while supporting government restriction of free speech for their opponents do not realize that lines move and governments change and one day the censorship machinery they loved may be turned on them.
Unless you support free speech for everybody and let ideas fight it out in public, you start on the slippery slope to totalitarianism where there is free speech for almost no one except government functionaries.
Canada? Free speech? I heard that you guys have a law, recently shown by Canada's Senate, that will not allow certain speeches or words to be said.
