Its fun to see people shouting and protesting about this just because they are so eager to have a purpose in life even though they don't know shit about what they're talking about.
You can see that the ducks have difficulty breathing. That's because they have a diseased liver inside of them that has swollen to many times it's normal size. And because of that, it pushes up against their lungs, making it difficult for them to breathe properly.
Yes, there's a beautiful pond and grass that ducks that can be on. But this is not a animal refuge habitat, it's a farm for eating ducks. The standards in place for raising there ducks here are high compared to other duck farms.
@BDizon44 Aren't we entitled to say something about a practice that we don't like? If nobody sees it and nobody gets to tell others about how they dislike it, then it will never stop. If nobody ever comments about how bad racism is, do you think it will ever stop? Or should we just pretend not to see or hear it?
Hudson Valley, you are no different from any other Foie Gras producer. You're all the same... beautiful green grass & scenery that only you're allowed to enjoy. These ducks are kept in a dark shed & have tubes shoved down their throats 3 x's a day. Kind of a strange thought, but If you made a movie out of this kind of treatment on humans (kept in dark cages, being force fed by tubes) it would be in the horror/sci-fi section, so why is it right to treat animals this way? It makes me sick.
No video could confirm the cruelty of gavage better than this. I watched the videos by the animal rights organizations and was shocked, but it was what I expected to see from those groups. Yet this video is paid for by foie gras farmers, and has nothing to show but rural stock footage, interviews with guilty farmers desperate to appear earnest and misunderstood, and a few embarrassed seconds of footage of ducks obviously suffering as a metal tube pumps corn deep into their throats.
I'm no peta faggot, but at the same time, raising something with the sole intention to make it sick and harvest the sick by product is a bit fucked up.
What a show, This is complete bullshit, by there "nice" feeding method they are pumping 3 pounds of food in them, that would be like a 150lb person eating 40lb of food
Of course this isn't what all the farms look like, and you know how sick you feel if you eat too much. If they weren't making them painfully full, they could just let them eat on their own. I'm sure that the farms where I get my meat from are cruel to, but I don't see any need to add an extra level of cruelty to food production.
We didn't get to the top of the food chain to eat fucking carrots. You animal rights activists are RIDICULOUS. All about saving the cute, pretty little animals but what about the fish?! We stab metal hooks through their mouth, tear them out of the water to a place where they cannot breathe, and toss them to die in a bucket. Nobody says dick about fish.
If your fruits and vegetables had mouths, I don't think they'd be laughing when you tear them out of the Earth you hypocritical motherfuckers..
@Formula420Production That's a bullshit argument. Fish, cows, pigs, chicken, ducks, etc... are part of the machine that it takes to feed this over populated shit country we live in. It can't be done any other way. I eat beef and pork all the time, but if I had to kill it myself, I wouldn't. I'm most certainly a hypocrite in that regard, as are 99% of people, but why torture animals EVEN MORE before the nasty kill? Because it makes their liver taste a little better? It's bullshit.
I can understand the owner & the marketing director being a***holes to a certain extent, but I'm speechless on those veterinarians defending this hideous thing. You're pumping the poor animal so wildly that its liver gets 10 times bigger than its normal size. How decent can you ever do that actually? Or what difference does it make that the animal does not choke on that tube because its anatomy is different? Is it the best you could do w/ all that they taught you back at school?
Large spaces for the ducks to roam, clean conditions, active ducks that are healthy. This place should be a model for farms everywhere. For those still complaining, I think the video speaks for itself. You can wish that ALL farms are disease ridden slaughterfests to prove a point, but the truth is that many places like these give their animals good, healthy living conditions.
@savvysearch I would love to believe this video is real but it is obviously a publicity video maybe in response to the undercover footage that was taken of this "farm". The thing that I kept noticing was that the ducks stayed far away from any human that walked near them. The duck I've met love strangers because they feed them. Why are these ducks scared?
@milesjjones I don't see that. The ducks aren't in any state of panic. They are neither avoiding the humans nor being affectionate to the humans. In other words, all I see are ducks acting like ducks. It's a difference of perception.
On the other side of the coin, even if the claims of it being a "publicity" video may be valid, I don't think one can reject their side of the story while accepting the animal right's organization's undercover videos as being unbiased truth.
The liver gets so fatty that it pushes the other organs and makes it hard for their lungs to fully inflate, so they are gasping toward the end. The tube shoved in can lacerate the lining of their throat. No duck would overeat if given the choice which is why they have to force feed them to get fatty livers. It's disgusting and needs to be banned!!!
Did you notice they didn't show the "processing" part?
@Miss65boo You realize ducks will easily overeat, right idiot? Its like if you shoves piles of lasgna in front of some poodle. Itll overeat, as would a duck overeat various other things.
@izuikaable There is no need to call me an idiot. A duck would not overeat to the point that they can barely stand, which is what is done in the making of fois gras. They also do not mention that they only use male ducks for fois gras, so all the female ducklings that are hatched are thrown out in large garbage bags, by the hundreds. Ducks also need water to wash their bills in, to keep their nostrils free of debris, but cannot do that in these farms. All this for a "delicacy"? Ridiculous!
Because it sounds to me, you are amongst the few who have some knowledge but not all. I wouldn't call you an idiot, but i certainly wouldn't call you a learned scholar on the subject. How about when you read up on foie gras you do so in an unbiased manner - otherwise you are a step closer towards idiocy
@Miss65boo Yes they would actually. A pet dog would overeat until its stomach is either ripping and tearing, its being released before getting digested, or its unable to move its jaw, if it was given enough common human food. A duck does that same. You're rather dense and naive.
@Miss65boo... well.... they, along with geese, do, in fact, overeat on purpose every year when it comes time to migrate (whether it's true migration or technically just nomadism). This is how it was discovered that the liver can be fattier. The birds overeat to give themselves the energy stores necessary for the trip and it is stored in the liver. Hunters noticed that their livers were larger at that time of year. No so odd to reproduce that at all. Nor is it so inhumane.
@Miss65boo Welcome to farming. Are you expecting some gender equality here? What do you think happens to male goats that cannot be milked? And how do you know that the females are being "thrown to a bag"? Many of these farms grow the females for meat and eggs. I can only wish that the chicken arriving at my table was treated as well and as responsibly as these Hudson Valley birds. Gavage by the way, does not have to be painful and should take about 5-7 seconds
Do you know the anatomy of the duck or goose? Do you know the properties of oesophagus (in case you were wondering about what the "lining of the the throat" was called)
Do you know that the oesophagus of a duck is characteristic of the human nail; nacre. So to lacerate the oesophagus would be very difficult
Also think of this - Birds are easily prone to death if they are in a state of shock - If gavage is so cruel. Wouldn't they die
How often do they film that beautiful open countryside and not ONE duck/ goose if free to roam on it, disgusting trying to portray this idea of freedom... then you go into their tiny shed and the poor animals are in there. I'm sure he feels like a bad guy when he reads the paper and realises no-one believes his bull-shit. He could raise his ducks for meat not foie-gras and have them free-range instead, but the fact is he has to make them obese for this 'delicacy'.
This guy is trying to justify force-feeding as if they don't feel it, do ducks/ geese have nerves in their throat? That is all that matters. If they are enjoying it so much, why are they trying to get away while their beaks are held to the funnel? Disgusting.
WHAT IF YOU WERE IN A TINY CAGE WITH NO ROOM NIETHER TO TURN AROUND TO SCRATCH YOUR ASSS? YOU WOULD BE IN STRESS AND THEN SOME ASSHOLE COMES IN AND FUCKING HITS YOU IN A CRUEL WAY? I KNOW WHY PPL SAY THERE'S NO GOD FOR THIS STUFF THEY SEE...BUT WE HUMANS WILL SEE THIS COMING FOR US ALSO WELL IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOD.. BUT I KNOW IT'S HORRIBLE :( I LOVE ANIMALS SO SO MUCH <3 -TEARS-
You know, I thought about what you people have said against Foie Gras. Aside from thinking that you're absolute tree-hugging, hypersensitive sheltered morons without a clue to life, I have decided that this christmas, my family will enjoy Foie Gras :)
Not only that, I will recommend it to my friends. I will prepare the dish for them, so they can taste it and enjoy it thoroughly. Then, their friends will recommend foie gras to their friends, and so on. Why? Because I can. Cry?
@rbjuliano Lol you wish you could afford it to start with haha and your attempt at offending people is so transparent it really just acts as a window to your own ignorance. Cry? I am, for you.
MANY people are "Hypocrites", care so much about animal welfares and they don't care their neighbors if they have eaten for days or if they are not sick!
So, essentially, you're creating a disease in an animal, then slaughtering it so you can eat their diseased organ. What part of this is humane? Whether or not you do this more carefully than others is not important.
@iturtle First off, these little guys eat fish whole and have no gag reflex, they're not "shoving" anything. Second, I have a fatty liver myself from eating delicious animals, it's not a disease. And finally YES, it is responsible in every meaning of the word of both myself and Hudson Valley to practice the preparation and supply of the peoples demand.
@iturtle I find it sad that people believe whatever they hear on Comedy Central and take what they've been fed as the truth without searching for any semblance of reality themselves. You need to experience life before you can form an opinion of your own, grow up.
@chefnathan666 That is a really lame way to put it. So, we should just bow down to demand? I will say that this farm is WAY better than others I have seen, and for that I am happy, but how do you know which restaurant is selling this farm's foie gras or some factory farm's foie gras that treats them terribly: lives in the dark, on wire cages, handlers that abuse them... I still think that sticking a tube down an animals throat to artifically enlarge their liver is fucked. I won't eat it.
@chefnathan666 Fatty liver is a sign of obesity and is not healthy. If you eat 'delicious' animals too much you are only killing yourself it's very bad for you to eat meat more than 3 times a week; look at how many diseases have been brought on the world through farming- foot & mouth, swine flu, cancer (BGH etc.) and mad cow disease to name a few. Even AIDS was a result of eating bush meat. People demand health and knowledge and not contaminated food.
@lioxoda ok, how are those sales of health and knowledge treating you? If you tell an idiot that they "need" Leptoprin because it really works and they buy it, that's not demand, that's ignorance. Go find another cause de'jour to get behind, you'll find plenty in California. You forgot to mention that rape and murder are a result of eating meat too.
@lioxoda Not exactly true. Surveys of cultures that continue to live as hunter-gatherer societies has found that daily meat consumption makes up over 80% of total calorie intake, yet these people do not suffer from the same diseases of civilization that we do. Their meat is higher quality than ours, but grass-fed commercial meats are very similar in nutrient composition and nutritional density to wild game meats. The key to health for modern humans lies in good dietary selection, portion...
@lioxoda (pt 2) ...control and adequate exercise. Eat whole, unprocessed meats, hard, lowfat cheeses, eggs, a variety of fruits and vegetables and avoid grains for a delicious, satisfying diet that promotes good health.
Also, notice how the video switches scenes before the worker releases the duck after it has been force-fed. Most likely because they have a negative reaction after the feeding that the public is not shown.
How do we know what they are showing us is the full truth? The ducks they show us may not have been ones that have undergone feeding for long enough to become sick.
• Hudson Valley Foie Gras produces a significant amount of waste — including manure and slaughter waste.
• The facility has discharged pollution into the Middle Mongaup River, a tributary to the Delaware River, which is popular for recreation and provides vital wildlife habitat. Pollution released by the facility has reached levels 300 percent of that permitted under state and federal law."
This sure does not agree with the two undercover videos anyone can find posted by Compassion over Killing and In Defense of Animals. Are they happy when you slaughter them for their fat livers? I am calling my vet today to get his opinion but I already know what the vets from the HSUS says, they are against it, but i imagine you can find heartless vets who have sold out the animals and will say anything for money.
Thank you for doing your part to educate the consumer on the true and responsible practices that have earned you my business. I wish there were more farmers that would be as active in this role as you guys are, you have set your place as a leader in this industry. Thank you.
@chefnathan666 I find it sad that you think shoving a rod down an animals throat and giving it a liver disease on purpose is "responsible"..this is not meant to happen in nature..it's disgusting, cruel and uneccesary. Shame on you for supporting the mistreatment of these beautiful animals.

Let me force feed you for a few weeks and see how you like it. There are good reasons this is illegal in any civilized country.
